His selection last week was right, kept the players fresh and got us an away win...yes AWAY WIN, we dont hear them words often! and are 5pts clear from the bottom! You want us to win the cup and get relegated? This is why your not the manager!

The away game v shakhter, you cant say we didnt deserve a draw, they were no better than us and 0-0 was the fair result, like said a mad few minutes cost us, in particular a goalkeeping howler...how is that Harry's fault?

Today he played the right team again because look at our cup tied list! What is the point of us continuing the uefa cup? ALso was a great chance for the youngsters and fringe players and they were all pretty damn good if you ask me. One of the poorer players was Fraizer Campbell and compared against our academy players, I think we have a few prospects maybe.

If we lift that cup on sunday...you'll change your tune

I was pleased to read an article on the Guardian website today with Harry discussing how THFC needs to be bringing through young players from the Academy into the first team, would be a shame if those ideals had gone out the door with Comolli. He seemed to suggest that his famous crop of youngsters at WHam were a cut above though, not the best way to be bigging up our lot.

The problem is, our squad is rather large, even if a lot of them are fringe players like Rocha and Gilberto, unless oyu have a small squad like say Everton, the youngsters have very few chances to gain any exposure.

Also, it's a shame Danny Rose has been out injured this season, as he was supposed to be one of our most exciting prospects and would probably have gotten some game time this year in the Uefa. Anyone know how he is doing or when he will be back?

Just in from the game. Credit to the lads who played today. They made a gallant effort in trying to over turn the 1st leg set back. For me the Hudd was immense. If only he had started in midfield. Special mentionn for Gilberto. I thought he played really well today and combined well with Bale on the left hand side.

To be honest I'm gutted we are out. Shakthar were there for the taking tonight and a more experienced team would have surely have put them to the sword tonight. Obika huffed and puffed but no way was he ready for this level. It's all about if's now but I'm sure if we had started with the team below, the one I suggested yesterday, we would be talking about a great victory tonight.

Gomes,
Gunter, Chimbo, Daws, Bale,
GDS, Palacios, Hudd, O'Hara,
Bent, Campbell.

GUTTED! Even more gutted now to see Milan knocked out and City as the new favs:evil:

No I wont ......... I will be pleased if we win obviously but doesnt effect the long term view that HR is not big enough for this job.
I want our manager who is being paid millions to keep a squad, that cost north of £200m, in the PL and to compete on all fronts. Not to pick and choose like he is managing Portsmouth

This tie was very winable over 2 legs.
Dont buy all this tiredness bollocks.. they had 11 days off before the first leg and would have had another 4 afterwards before the Hull game. As for the CC we have often played Thursdays and Sundays before and not done too bad not to mention he doesnt just have 11 players to pick from.

HR is simply managing this club like every other small club he has been at (which is all of them) moaning about fixtures, tiredness, the fact we are in Europe and its a distraction etc etc just wont wash. THFC are a big club and we have ambitions and demands he will never have faced before and he is looking out of his depth

The club will not progress with him as manager and personally I hope he goes in the summer and we get somebody with some drive and ambition.

Martin O'Neill did almost exactly the same thing and saw Villa get knocked out of Europe because of it, so Redknapp is not the only one prioritising the League over Europe.

I dont hear MON saying I wish I wasnt in Europe, not bothered if we qualify next year, moaning about fixture congestion ........ not to mention MON has taken a very limited squad to the the brink of CL football something HR will never achieve.

You didn't hear Redknapp saying that either, unless you've been listening to strange voices in your own head. I'd guess this is a possibility.

But I'm sure we should all bow to your many years' experience of managing top-level football teams.

Our league concerns are even more pressing than theirs though, if they fuck up the finish 5th and it's still been a good season, if we slip up we get relegated and it's a disaster. Also, if, and it's a big if, but if we win the CC on Sunday and it is partly due to resting first teamers tonight, I think most fans would be happy to sacrifice the Uefa Cup. HR has repeated on numerous occasions that if our League position was more secure he would be happy to give the Uefa a proper crack, but since it isn't and a good few of our key players are injured or inelligible anyway it was a good call to rest the first team and give some experience to the youngsters.

I have to say how proud I was of our lads tonight. We didn't play like a team of youngsters thrown together. They passed the ball well, had some good chances and Gio took his goal well. We should have had at least one penalty out of the three times Campbell was brought down in the box. I thought O'Hara worked his socks off, and once he came off we weren't such a good side. Shame they couldn't have beaten Shakhtar. They deserved another run out!
Bostock learnt a lesson tonight, as it was his mistake that led to their goal.
Obika looked a good prospect too. I'd rather have him on the bench for games than Campbell!

Gomes looked relaxed and happy. A good omen for Sunday!
The crowd were magnificent too. Terrific applause at the end.

Oh and my son said he saw Royer Lloyd Pack (Trigger from Only fools and horses) at the game!

I agree with the bold bits, most of the crowd left once the Shaktar goal went in.

As soon as the goal went in we seemed to back off!!! What happened, we were in control. I think the turning point came when J O'Hara went off, Deano Parrett did well and got stuck in but he still has a lot to learn.

Gilberto I thought did good tonight, three nice crosses and only gave away shocking passes about 3 times !

Wilson P is a hero at the Lane already.

Crap ref - really bad. Worst I have seen for a long time.

All the young lads did well -:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap: to you

and

Obika looked a good prospect too. I'd rather have him on the bench for games than Campbell! - YES seconded!

I hope all those people who say they are not bothered by us being knocked out of Europe, do not complain if we don't qualify for Europe this season or subsequent seasons.

Its hard to believe many fans and certain players were talking about challenging for champions league places during preseason.

With Villa, Valencia, AC Milan, Bordeaux, Fioretina and Standard Liege going out the UEFA cup was there for the taking. We would have had as good a chance as any other team left if we had gone through. Man City are the new favs ffs....

I would be absolutely gutted if Man city won it. We had a great chance to progress further in this competition than we have done previously. All I can say is that we better turn out one hell of a performance on sunday...

Isn't it just? But it was always going to be difficult after taking 2 points from a possible 24. But that's what a world-class manager with ambition and vision brings to the party. Aren't we forgetting that we were pretty fortunate to get this far after a much stronger starting XI staggered past Wisla? Or lost to a frankly not very good Udinese? Of course we are. Some of us, anyway.

We have a CC Final against arguably the best side in Europe (or indeed, on the planet) on Sunday. Just in case you hadn't noticed, we're by no means out of the shit league-wise, and we have two league games we could really do with winning in rapid succession.

I don't think anyone—bar a couple of total idiots—is 'not bothered' that we're out of UEFA. However, I'm sure we'd all be a whole lot more bothered if we got sucked back into the relegation mire.

Deluded City fans betting the farm after their team staggered past one of the weaker sides left in the competition (thanks to that Welsh bloke some of our members didn't want us to sign).

I was happy tonight

Gomes didn't get injured ahead of the final, which was important
Gunter is fine defensively, but not great going forward. Looks like a CB.
Chimbonda had my heart in my mouth once or twice but never actually cocked up.
Huddlestone was our best player for me. Some of his passing was immense and he tackles well.
Gilberto played well, very well, shockingly so. Too little too late I fear, but he was very good.
Giovani had a couple of nice runs fizzle out, didn't do much, and then scored a great goal.
Bale put some good balls into the box, passed neatly and dribbled well against a top class right back in Srna. For now left wing may well be his calling.
Palacios works so hard and is so determined, but I felt he tired a bit towards the end. Understandable.
O'Hara, well I just thought that he was poor and I certainly hope he does not start on sunday. Off the pace throughout.
Campbell had a clever hand in the goal and played his best game in a while, but dissappointingly was never a goal threat.
Obika took to first team football with ease. I had my doubts, despite having seen a lot of the kids team. His touch was good, he holds the ball up well, is very strong and seems to get chances. A shame he didn't put one away but I don't think this is the last we've seen of him. Quicker than he looks as well and was involved in our best moves. Only flaw was that he seemed to take a while sometimes to decide what to do, an inevitable bana skin stepping up from acadamy level to elite competition.
Parrett was a little tiger. He seems far happier in the middle than he did in the hole and our wide last week. Good passing, quick thought, clever tackling.
Bostock on the other hand did less. He had less time, and is a 1st year trainee while the other two are 2nd year. Obviously talented but tried to do too much.

I would have liked to see either Mason or Townsend, they are the most exciting of the lot, especially Mason.

On sunday I have a feeling that Dawson and Woodgate will be the centre back pairing, and that King will be given Palacios midfield role instead of Zokora. I hope this hunch comes true. As for the Keane role, if it is between Bentley and O'Hara, there is not a doubt in my mind that it should go to Bentley. I don't think much of him so far but there is no doubt that if he pulls a good game out of the bag he offers more. In all honesty, if Pavlyuchenko gets the nod up front, then Bentley should definitely get the slot vacated by Keane. However, if Bent is up front, I would give it to Huddlestone. He played very well tonight and he plays just the sort of passes that Bent thrives on.

For me, either:

.............Gomes
Corluka Daws Woody Ekotto
Bentley King Jenas Lennon
.............Modric
............RomanP

Or

...............Gomes
Corluka Daws Woody Ekotto
Lennon Huddle King Modric
...............Jenas
................Bent

However, I doubt I'll get either of these. My prediction of what it will be:

...........Gomes
Corluka King Woody Ekotto
Lennon Jenas Zokora Bentley
..............Modric
...............Bent

The team that I think it probably will be looks good on paper, but both of mine would work better.

Bellamy has been great for Citeh so far. I'm still glad that we didn't spend 15m on a near 30 year old with a penchant for getting into trouble, and who has alrady managed to do so since signing for Citeh. Keane was cheaper, is a bit younger, and long term I am sure will be better. And Defoe, well I'm just gutted that he got hurt because he made a great start.

True, although theres still a lot of good (probably better than us) teams involved, but also with all those teams going out it also shows that theres no shame in going out at this stage. What is more worrying is, as has been said, is the attitude towards Europe as a burden - I mean technically right now it was, but... it was also nice to see young players going for it in our colours, and I don't think they looked out of their depth against a decent side (not an amazing one but certainly one comfy on the ball).

Maybe it comes down to being too cautious in the first leg, had we just had a bit more cutting edge up front today (aside from the crap ref) we would have won - but we were a little on the back foot in the first leg although it looked until late on that we'd escape with a 0-0.

And who cares about the odds, we're always well up there in the betting every year for UEFA (weren't we 2nd or 3rd favs at the outset), Cups, even the League because the bookies know a fool and their money are easily parted...

I was only opposed to Bellamy because of his injury record. He has, to be sure, been a bit of a knob, but hardly in the Barton class (he hasn't, as far as I'm aware, tried to kill a team-mate)—and he is a very good player indeed, highly underrated.
