TBH I was surprised when he went to Wbrom. Thought he would be much better off at a club where he could get real service and support, as well as having MFs who could finish his droppings, Most importantly he needed a club that could allow him license to let out his flair. That was two (three?) years ago, and I do fear brom have wasted some of his potential. At 2 mill he might be worth a punt though.

Meh. I know he'd be 3rd choice but still. Can't be much worse than Defoe though.

Just sign him as a back up.... we can then wait for summer window to do proper business. After all, TS may not be the permanent manager end of the season.

My personal hopes are that we would sell Defoe now as the offer is right and his value will only continue to diminish. Bring on Shane Long as a pacy option that can get in behind defenses and function as a backup/impact sub. Then in the Summer we could just as easy look to sell him as we bring on a younger player that will need a summer to settle (Luis Muriel, Michy Batshuayi).

Why exactly do we need a third senior striker? Arsenal and Liverpool do just fine with 2, and one of Arsenals is Nikolas fuckin Bendtner.

Unless we can upgrade on Ade/Soldado id rather we gave Kane/Coulthirst the odd game instead of buying for the sake of buying.

Nothing against Long, but if we get him it just smells of Levy buying someone on the cheap and looking to make a profit on him later on or we will be blocked from buying real quality in the summer because we have 3 senior strikers on the books already and struggle to shift anyone.

I agree with panoma. Why add to the books when we always find it hard to shift our squad players.

Would rather have Lamela and Kane at 3 and 4. Lamela would get more game time this way also, and it means we don't have to integrate another player to the squad.

Right, first off Long is a bloody good forward. Ok he's obviously not the cream of the crop, but he's a very good player IMO. Works like a Trojan, runs the channels, can hold it up and can finish pretty well. So, he can play up top and lead the line by himself and can also work well with a partner.

As a cheap buy for some quality cover what's the problem? If Ade gets injured or comes out of form badly it could look an excellent piece of business come the end of the season.

Not to mention he's proven at this level in this League and won't require time to adapt really. Far less risk than another more expensive foreign import who could well take time to settle. Far less risk than relying on the likes of Kane or some the other younger ones as well - because he's simply above their level at the moment.

If we're looking for someone who can come in and slot into the side straight away and hit the ground running, it looks good to me.

For 2mill its a very small risk investment, I'm sure we could get our money back very easily on him, even in 6 months time if we wanted to.

So you'd be happy playing for a month with Kane and lamela up front? Ade and/or Soldado are bound to get injured sooner rather than later, and we will be left short (again). All for the sake of 2mill pounds

The money is not the issue that bugs me though. Filling the squad with average is. I would rather go with Lamela/Kane for 5 months; as a footballer, Lamela is far ahead of Long.

Allowing Lamela the 'VDV' role could work-he would score goals. He is already considered as rotation anyway, and is above average.

I take your point about Ade and soldado being out, but I'm not the kind of sucker who likes to jinx his own team:p

I could definitely see a club that gets recently promoted being willing to splash 5m on him even after we spent 2m on him 6 months before. Promoted sides know they need Premier League strikers to stay up and often times they don't have them on their books prior to being promoted.

Long for 2m and Kane on loan to West Brom for half a season?

It's an idea.

Not a bad idea, really. Personally, I'm not sure I see a EPL club going for Kane. I think he still has a lot to prove and I could see him simply going to QPR to be with Harry as he could see significant playing time and it appears Sherwood is some sort of distant disciple of Redknapp's tactics. Could make a lot of sense. Also, if Kane were to do well and QPR gets promoted, it could make for a potential season long loan to them for EPL experience next season.

You might be right. Especially considering WBA have their own 20 year old striker in Berahino. Kane could easily be on Berahino's level though, just needs that chance.

If we sell Defoe and buy a cheap striker to slot into his spot then it's the slap in the face to us as fans, as a shows a true lack of ambition. The Defoe money should be used to put towards another proper striker, not a stop-gap that can "do the job" if called upon. We should be upgrading, not downgrading.

If I have failed to see something in him, and that he is indeed better than Defoe, than please tell me.

Don't agree at all. We spent £26m on a striker this summer. Ade is back and still one of our record players in terms of wages. Long can play with either of the other two, Defoe can't, and he seems to work significantly harder and presents more of a physical presence. How often is Defoe/Long actually going to get assuming Ade and Soldado don't get too many injuries.. maybe he isn't a guy who will get you the (alleged) super sub goal Defoe will, but looking at JD's prem record this year that is up for debate.

Buy him and move him on in medium term as a solid premiership performer meets Levy's MO and frankly appears to make quite a lot of sense..

Yeah, the more people talk about it, the more I'm about it. Has smart buy written all over it.
