New boss Sherwood will look for a striker to replace Defoe but must sell before he can buy after Spurs splashed over £100million in the summer

Tim Sherwood has been told he will not have major funds to spend in the January transfer window – but could make a shock move for West Brom striker Shane Long, writes Dave Kidd in the Sunday People.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is insisting the Londoners sell before they buy following their £110million summer spree.

Spurs will pocket £6m from Jermain Defoe’s move to Major League Soccer club Toronto and are trying to find a buyer for £4m-rated defender Kyle Naughton.

But that figure of around £10m is likely to be all Sherwood is given when the window opens on Wednesday as there are few other players Spurs are willing to let go and would earn any significant fees from.

Republic of Ireland striker Long is seen as a decent affordable replacement for Defoe, a squad striker who would be behind Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado in the pecking order.

Long is out of contract with the Baggies at the end of the season and would be available for about £4m, well within Sherwood’s price range.

The White Hart Lane boss will target a striker and a left-back, but may recall Benoit Assou-Ekotto from his loan at Queens Park Rangers to fill that defensive void.

A surprise move for Fulham’s former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov has been mooted as a short-term solution up front but the Bulgarian left North London under a cloud when he joined Manchester United in 2008.

If true about us buying before selling, I really hope someone buys out ENIC because they haven't spent shit this year and have pocketed the extra tv money at the moment

The only thing I can think is that we must have the bones of £400m down the back of the couch by now.

I actually rate Shane long! He's a willing runner who runs the channels all day... If only Defoe had his movement! He's also lightning quick and ideal to bring on against tiring defenders with 20 to go.

Yep sign him up (y)

I like Shane Long. He's a good player, hard worker and is a bit of a handful.

Just think he's not as good as the players we currently have.

Great player on his day. Doesn't have enough of those days unfortunately. Won't bring us to the level we need.

Don't slit the wrists just yet. He's also linked with Pool, Everton, Newcastle, Celtic and Hull.

Long is decent, better than Bentner for example. But if we sign Long when someone like Berbatov is available for £2/3M I think I might be putting in a call to the Samaritan's.

Berba would expect to start though would he not? We need someone decent that knows they are not a guaranteed starter. Like united with Hernandez.

He probably would expect to start, because he's that bloody good. It's all about opinions but I'd take him over Ade all day long.
