"following their £110million summer spree." God damn. Who the hell edits this horseshit?

Do they mean following our £3million spending spree? Because that was our total spending. Learn some math, papers. It would serve you well.

Daniel, cough up the dough. Your robbing Garber of £9m for the waste that is Defoe. Just throw a little more investment than £9m please. Im not asking for much. Maybe like £20m investment would suffice? We need a CB, LB, striker and left winger. A £29m expenditure would could propel us to top 4. It would only be a £20m investment...
Ok, my OCD won't allow this. Our TOTAL spend (the amount we spent or paid out) was over £100m. Our NET spend (the amount we spent less the amount we received) was a whole lot less.

There is a huge difference, and I'm afraid you've got it wrong this time.

We need someone who is of PL quality but accepts they wouldn't be first/second choice. Long fits that description perfectly tbh
I see what your saying. But for me there is no point signing a player who in the back of his mind knows he will never be good enough. I'd rather sign a younger striker, who is happy to learn and wait for his chance, but has the potential to actually become a first team regular. I'm not against Long on a short term loan until the end of the season though.

Don't like that phrase. It suggests comfort, as in no need to try as I'm 3rd choice. I'd rather someone who was eager to prove they are a first choice striker.

Yeah because bedding in 14 players over the last one and a half years wasn't hard enough, lets bring in 4 more

I hope to God when I click on the first page in order to read through this thread I discover this is a joke. What's the point in having youngsters like Kane, Shaq & Soli if you aren't going to give them an opportunity? There is only so much they can learn playing for the likes of Millwall and Orient.

Perfect signing, quality and very underrated player, would take him in a heartbeat. Give Kane a prem loan where he'll play a good deal, or keep him and give him playing time.

He's PL quality alright with plenty of experience but I don't think that he'd be happy to accept being 3rd choice. He'll want to play and prove himself which could be good for us in terms of competition for places and squad rotatio.

There is something to be said about turning to youth but only when the time is right. If we look at our current FWDS we have Defoe, Ade , Soldado, Kane and Shaq.
1) Now if you were to believe the reports, Defoe to MLS is a done deal
2) Soldado is still adjusting to the league
3)Ade is a weird quantity, he can be useful when he desires but wholly uninterested the next minute.
4) Kane and Shaq are not fully suited to handle the rigors of a PL season and truthfully we do not know as of yet what they can bring to the team.

With Shane Long we know 2 things for sure
1) He can play well as a lone FWD
2) He will run his socks of and make defenders work

We also know he has a good aerial ability and good finishing not to mention good movement off the ball. For 4mill at 26 years old ( an age where most fwds begin to enter their peak seasons) with vast EPL experience, we could definitely do alot worse. If anything having him aboard could show Kane and Shaq the importance of working hard off the ball and being willing to run your socks off for the team.

Also we have to consider what does the team really need at the moment. A foreign forward who might suffer with the league/language or one who is already settled and would instantly impact our play. Sometimes we get wrapped up in glamour and high profile names but our team needs grit to balance out the pretty play. Shane Long can be that grit to balance out the eriksen/lamela etc and because this would be a low profile signing, Shane can get his head down and just focus on playing rather than trying to live up to some expensive fee.

Honestly, we could do a lot worse as a third choice.

Coulthirst & Coulibaly aren't ready for the Premier League yet, and if they were, I'm sure Sherwood of all people would know, as he did with Bentaleb. As for Kane, I'm not convinced he's got what it takes; he's only looked promising at best so far in the Premier League.

If he came he would probably fancy his chances of taking Soldados place in the team.
I think he would get a lot more game time than most would imagine

If we're going to play 2 up front and Defoe leaves then at least 1 more striker will need to come in and as you say would get plenty of game time. I don't know if Long is the answer but he is a good player and would be good value with his contract running down and also with decent sell on value which would please Mr. Levy. I'd love to see someone like Coulthirst step up but don't know if they're ready for it yet, Long wouldn't be a bad purchase at all.

I really like this player, he's a fighter and has some good stamina for the way he plays. If we truly do transfer Defoe then we need a player like him that will bare down and just put in the effort consistently.
