tbf I think Dier did his job effectively today, and has been playing a lot better than many on here seem to think. Against Wolves and Burnley he was really effective, particularly against aerial threats in the box. In both games it was a strategic move. Basically we are 2-0 down, a risk adverse holding midfielder is not going to help us here.

NDombele will I'm sure play more as time goes on, playing him with Sissoko, however, is madness, it won't work, hasn't worked, will never work. NDombele looks much more effective when thinking forward. He needs to play with a more defensive minded player who is there essentially to fill in the games of what Jose has called a 'positional' player. I don't fully trust Winks to play this role and would rather see him as a number 8 but he has been playing it pretty much all of this season.

The problem with the current midfielders is there isn't a good enough passer in there, and not just there but in the team as a whole. IN the past it was Eriksen's job really to provide that. But now we seem more interested in getting the ball quickly up the field and trying to get hold of it somehow. Now this works against weaker opponents, but against the stronger teams maybe we do need some control.

Agree with your general post but surely Ndombele is the brilliant passer

Dier is so so shit mate. MOTD highlighted the fact he can’t turn and pass forward and it was evident again today, he’s either a CB or he’s a CDM for a championship club. Awful.

getting hooked 25mins & 45mins says it all, that rarely happens once to a player never mind twice in 5 games.

We need to buy the best defensive midfielder we can realistically get and for once we will need to overpay to get him

A defensive midfielder we can pass forward. On the 15th min toby played a ball to Dier and he just had to turn with it and pass forward. What did he do? He passed it back to toby as soon as he got it

Toby was pissed off with him
tbf in that case Toby was in a better position than Dier to try and hit a long pass. SO I can understand the logic. think Dier was also pissed to get that ball as their was loads of space for the defenders to move into.

I think Toby and Verts had both bad games. Far too casual, not stepping up when they needed to step up and playing too slowly between themselves. In the second half they were much better, but the sending off killed it.

The left's been hyping up race conflict at every possible opportunity, and at a lot that they simply invented...maybe they've finally goaded people into giving them what they want.
Bullshit. I didn't positively specify a cause. No one even knows these people's names yet let alone their history. I suggested that the left's - real - hyping of race conflict might be a cause, which it very well might - a subject for further inquiry. I don't see what your problem is beyond reading a definitiveness into my post which wasn't there.

You are aware the Mail, Sun, Katie Hopkins, Boris Johnson and little Tommy aren't 'left'?

Because it's people like this that seem to be doing the majority of this 'hyping' to me.

I expect neg ratings and maybe this is emotion talking but...

Anyone else feeling like they have been conned by Jose's PR charm offensive?

Laid bare, we seemingly benefited from the classic new manager bounce but reality is we haven't played well in any game aside from Burnley.

I felt like Jose was brought in for the big occasions yet against both United and Chelsea we looked arguably worse than ever.

I get possession isn't always effective and under Poch it at times felt pointless but it feels like we have gone to the other extreme.

I genuinely can't remember one period of sustained pressure in any match under Jose.

I'm hoping it will come good but can't say I'm filled with much confidence, he is seemingly not learning from his mistakes which was the downfall of Poch.

Totally agree. I had to turn the game off after 30 minutes. It was torture watching the games v United and Bayern, just couldn't sit through it again. One team was playing football, the other hoof and hope. It's unwatchable. Even when we were bad under Poch we still had periods of a game where we knocked the ball around well, played some good football. We now look like Wimbledon in the '80s. It's just not Tottenham.

The problem with VAR is consistency, one day it’s not a pen next day it is, one awful tackle or swing at someone is ignored, a graise with the foot is a clear red as the player went down in a heap, are we rewarding theatrics?
That said I’m not too pissed about VAR today as had we the 11 and they 10 we still weren’t up for it, our energy levels were zero, tactics clueless, passing worse than pub league, and we had a few headless chickens, we defeated ourselves, pathetic top to bottom.
No consistency & no common sense being used. Dele fouled on edge of the box they can't use VAR to show he was actually offside but can use it to check the foul wasn't in the box.

"I think the penalty should have been a red card, he has flown at him. I don’t think he means to do it so I can understand why it is not, it is probably fair."

Lampard never struck me as the brightest.
He's a thick t*** like our players

I'm honestly not sure that this club will ever be able to forge a real mental strength that lasts for more than brief periods.

Even after the last 5 years of confidence building (one would hope) and then Mr mind games himself being appointed, I still expected this game to go the way that 95% of these big games, games that put down a marker, have some for my entire Spurs life.

And it did. Not even angry or disappointed. Just the way it had always been. Maybe Jose can change that for a couple of years but we will revert back to type when he moves on either way.

It's just who we are underneath it all.
Agree it’s in our DNA but we were building towards something on and off the pitch but lack of investment last 4 windows is showing now, doesn’t matter what our club DNA is and who the manager is if he has a 2nd choice mid table goalie, Aurier RB, Dier & Sissoko in a double pivot that’s 4 key positions who are well well under par, against Burnley we can get away with it but not against top 6-8 teams or in the CL we get shown up for the quality of our squad which isn’t good enough.

I'm still trying to understand how one of the best coaches in the world chose Dier for DM and Alli as #10. It's mental!

What happened is totally irrelevant. Rudiger was racially abused. By us. End of story. The ONLY thing our manager should be dishing out to him is a grovelling apology.
Racism totally unacceptable but he was talking about Rudiger's overreaction!

Mate both of those were logical tactical decisions and had eff all to do with how he was playing. Again focus on what he can do not what he cant.

You've made up your mind about him and it isn't going to change so go with it. But for me, he isn't perfect but has been doing his job effectively. If you watch the wolves game and Burnley game again, and focus on what he does you will see. A good DM knows how to mark space and Dier does that more effectively than anyone else we have.

We need to buy a mobile destroyer.

Someone in the Ndidi mould to sit behind Ndombele.

Its actually tragic how easily Kovacic and Kante walked all over us so easily.
