So now the dust has settled a bit on us parting ways with Conte, it got me thinking as Spurs fans who do we think did a better job out of the two ‘Super Elite’ Managers that we sold our soul to the devil for during the last 3 years: Jose Mourinho or Antonio Conte?

Jose:
Played 86
Won 45
Drawn 17
Lost 24
GF ave 2.01
GA ave 1.28
1.77PPG
Highest finish 6th
Best cup result : League Cup Final (sacked before it)

Conte:
Played 76
Won 41
Drawn 12
Lost 23
GF ave 1.79
GA ave 1.12
PPG 1.78
Highest finish 4th
Best cup result : Rd of 16 in the CL

For me this is actually quite a close call.

Both managed us for about 500 days in total. The stats are on the whole pretty similar, Conte has marginally better PPG, Jose’s Spurs scored more goals but played in lesser European competition.

Conte was better in the league, Jose was better in the cups.

Jose arguably had a better squad when he took over but Conte got better financial backing with signings.

Jose alienated and cast aside players and the football at times was horrible to watch and we kept throwing away leads, Conte also alienated certain people and also the football was horrible at times and we often had terrible 1st halves and had to keep making big comebacks from 2/3-0 down.

When we were good under Conte at the end of his 1st season we thrashed Everton, Leicester, Norwich and got an epic win away at Man.City.

When we were good under Jose we pummelled Man.U 6-1 away? Put 5 past Southampton at their place beat Man.City and so on.

We also topped the table under Jose and under Conte we had our best ever PL start.

Jose took over when we were around 12th I think under Poch and got us to 6th, Conte took us over when we were around 9th under Nuno and got us to 4th.

Conte also had 3 personal tragedies and a health scare to deal with. Jose had a pandemic to deal with.

Both managers were stubborn and toxic and negative in different ways.

Both were motivational in ways at times.

For me it’s a very close call but I actually think that Jose did a better job, if he was given the cup final he might have won it and if we’d not thrown away that lead in Europe against that team with the Manager in jail I think he’d have got us to the final, he also didn’t get as much financial backing in the transfer market as Conte did and he took us over in a lower league position.

Close call and ups and downs with both and ultimately neither we’re a particularly good fit for us but for me I think Jose just about edges it.

Who do you think did a better job for us overall and why?

I think both could've done better had they not been hamstrung by Levy but looking back at their records, neither were terrible, they just weren't the right fit under our chairman.
It's a coin toss between the two for me.

Conte was better for me. He got us CL
I thought that initially but then remembered that Jose took over when we were about 12th right compared to Conte taking us over in about 9th so for them to get us 6th and 4th respectively from those starting positions is pretty similar going really?

So then it comes down to cups and Jose wins that hands down imo.

But it is probably quite a close call so interesting to see the results once the poll has quite a few votes.

Mourinho didn't belittle the club at every opportunity and directed his frustrations at the structure more
Mourinho got more stick than Conte despite the above
Mourinho played attacking football prior to the defence collapsing post Liverpool match but so did Conte prior to this season
Conte's situation off the pitch led to the results going awry imo but he also suffered heavily from injuries
Mourinho on the other hand didn't have the quality of players Conte did
Mourinho gave youth players more of a look in then anyone in a long time
Mourinho got slaughtered for his assessment of the squad which ironically a year later, the fans and new manager started to rectify

Mourinho finally got slaughtered for his treatment of N'Dombele YET he got more out of him than any manager

Mourinho was harshly sacked imo and its criminal he was sacked a week before a cup final. We may had won our first trophy in over a decade and imo we would have under Mourinho

Jose had a lot to contend with. Unprecedented times during the pandemic and sacked before a final which was disgusting. Limited backing in the transfer market too. Did much better than Conte imo

Its marginally Jose for me. Should have played Bale more and had the covid issues to deal with. COnte did half a season better but his constant moaning began to get on my nerves
The squad Jose had was not as good as well

That run in before Christmas under Jose before the Liverpool loss was great fun. Loads of goals, lightning counter attacking play and gritty wins. Shame it all fell apart as I enjoyed that period more than any under Conte, and also much Jose as a bloke. Clearly loved the club and was giving his all for it.

That being said, Conte getting top 4 was a big achievement and definitely feel the squad was in a worse place for him (after Jose and Nuno) than it was for Jose coming in after Poch. Pretty close but I'd say Conte just squeaks it as far as achieving more with less.

Jose everyday of the week, just go back and look at the squad he had compared to Contes, no comparison. We got to League cup final, smashed United at Old Trafford and with a team of misfits.... most of who are now away from the club.

He did everything he did with a centre back partnership of Dier and Sanchez and a midfield of Winks, Hoijberg, Lo Celso and Ndombele. He had to settle for Gedson Fernandes, Matt Doherty, Carlos Vinicius and Joe fucking Rodon.

Conte got Kulusevski, Bentancur, Bissouma, Peresic and Richarlison. He had signings that wouldn't look out of place at Barca, Jose had signings that wouldn't look out of place at Millwall.

Yes, Conte did a great job getting us Champions league, no doubt, but he had much better tools to do it with. Jose was working with players that in hindsight were terrible.

Both had really odd moments where they suddenly lost interest. Still not sure what Jose's excuse was...

...but Conte lost one of our coaches and then two of his best mates and became a shadow of what he was when he joined.

Conte's record would have been significantly better than Mourinho's without that happening and we'd have got stronger.

Football... 🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

Jose by a mile, he had to deal with periods without Kane, he was saddled with Dele, got us into a final and until West Ham exposed out defensive frailties had us playing decent football. Conte benefitted from some quality transfers that clicked with Bentancur and Kulu, we can now clearly see Bentancur was pivotal to our performances and our decline under Conte coincides with losing Bentancur.

Conte's job getting us cl was remarkable and better than anything Jose did, but what he did to us this season was far worse than Jose. Overall I'd say Jose did a better job in .ore challenging circumstances.

I'd rather forget both of their tenures. Jose sucked all the culture that Poch had engendered at the club, and everyone was miserable.

Conte never wanted to be here, and should never have been hired.

If I had to choose though... Jose I actually respect, and is someone who I'd like to actually sit down and discuss football with.

Conte... ****y more like.

This season has really softened me on Mourinho honestly. Despite being the bigger name, he was still respectful to us and didn’t talk us down at every opportunity.

Given the hype and the money for both, neither did nearly enough.

I really like both. I think both really tried very hard to want to win something for us, with us. Their attitudes are questionable at times, but there is no doubt in their professionalism and their soft spot for us IMHO. Both of their sackings really depressed me because having two winner managers who I have been dreaming of managing us failed with us really got me given up any hope of us winning anything.

I have been following Mourinho eversince in IG and he's just a great guy, fun guy. I want to be jealous and hate Roma for winning the Conference League last season but I just can't seem to do that. I hope they can win the Europa League this season.

Jose just shades it, but that might be because I found him a bit more likeable.

I think Jose was a class act for us, and he did have us top of the league for a few weeks. The Pandemic was probably the difference between his succeeding and not. And it was wrong for Levy to sack him before the cup final.

Conte, for the most part was classy, always good in pre match stuff, and I admire the way he never blamed referees for losses, even when they made decisive mistakes. Unfortunately he was just so passionate in his post match interviews that his rants brought out some unsavoury sound bites.

I don’t believe either manager wanted us to play the way we ended up playing (sitting so deep, camped inside our own box)

Conte’s problem was he played the same 11 players regardless of performance,
Mourinho would change personnel, however I feel he would hang a player out to dry one week, then expect them to come back in to the side a few games later and perform.
