We've had many many stars over the years, its a shame many of them have been isolated stand out performers and not part of a grand team.

how much would our stars of yesteryear be worth on todays market? Hoddle, Ardiles, Waddle, Villa, Allen, Lineker, Gazza, Ginola etc?

If you consider how much Waddle and Gazza went for at the time we actually sold them you'd have to assume they'd be right at the top transfer fee-wise.

So you think hoddle woild be worth 80 mil?
Yeah!.. footballs changed .. completly overhyped..at hoddles time we could afford to keep him.. the reason he went wasnt money it was his desire to try continental football.
Transfer fee's cant possibly relate to then & now.
I wad fortunate to see hoddle at through his time at spurs.. bales got a bit to yet to compete imho.

I dont think the question was who was the better player or who is more lengendary at spurs..

The question was how much would they be worth if we had them in our squad today..

In which I could safely say any of them would struggle to be worth as much as bale is worth

Bale could be conceivably go for the highest price of any player ever in world football, he is double footballer of the year and in the top 3 footballers in the world. Even taking into account the relative growth in transfer prices we can rarely claim to have had a player of such magnitude and value for his time.

To say he doesnt compare to any of our old stars is ridiculous and overly sentimental. Personally I think old school football is overhyped and I was around watching football in the 80s. Give me modern football anyday.

Saying that Hoddle, Gazza, Ardiles et al. would certainly be superstars in the modern game (assuming they could adapt to the physicality and athleticism which is far from a given)

Paul Gascoigne before his injury was supposed to go for a world record £8m,
while the current record is £80m. Is it as easy as to say players from that time periode's transfer value today would be ten times what they were at the time? Chris Waddle, three seasons earlier cost £4.5m which was the third highest transfer sum of the time.
Reckon Gazza would be £80m today (pre injury), while Waddle would be around 50-60.

& as i said you cannot relate the cost as football has drastically changed... hoddles era it was still sport rather than finance.

Paul Gascoigne was a superstar for us. Took our unbalanced team to 3rd in the league in 89/90,
gave us the FA cup final in 1991 when he averaged more than a goal a game in the domestic cup competitions -
19 goals in 37 games all competitions, from a central midfield position.
He was the sexiest, wildest name in world football and had just been in the 90' World Cup all star team.
He really was the heir to Diego Maradona on the world football scene.
And as said, a money rich Lazio team was willing to pay a record 8m for him back then before he got injured.

Think it's a very similiar situation to Gareth Bale to be honest, I'd say Gazza would be vauled at £80m at his peak.
They are/were both unique

There's a big difference between what they would be worth now and what Daniel Levy would ask for.

I would say Gazza before his injury would be worth about £70m but Levy would want about £100m paid up front.
If Levy was buying however he would bid £12m in 5 year instalments.

And he'd be signed on deadline day and not get any Premier League game time until mid October when he'd make a first team appearance and instantly become a mainstay

Lineker would be worth crazy money too- consistent top goal scorer wherever he played.
