You say that but what if this protracted transfer drags out till late August, subsequently play a couple of matches and then get gazumped by a rival (Chelsea or Utd) leaving us scratching around last minute for a replacement who will almost certainly be sub-standard to Raya?

Yes that's of course hypothetical but not outside the realms of possibility. I don't believe we should leave such a key recruit as our future No. 1 to brinkmanship - especially with Levy's track record - and if Brentford firmly will not engage in negotiating any lower than the reported £40m then we pay it.
I absolutely agree with you and as i mentioned, thats the only leverage Brentford have on us. But even if we are absolutely convinced he's the best choice, if we value him at £25m (and realistically would pay £30m for him) i'd still say we should walk away at £40m. You have a valuation/budget and you stick to it.

Seems like Raya is doing his bit to push the move, Brentford are neither wealthy nor stupid, they'll get it done somewhere closer to our figure (probably with appearance add ons). We don't need him for a little while anyway, pre season training is a few weeks away, by which time i assume Munn will be officially working for us and he (or a swiftly appointed DoF) would be doing the deal, not Levy ???

And the 8-10 points adrift of everyone at the top.

Mind you some of the experts tell me the PL or any other league isn't won in August.

However it can be lost.

I’m guess whilst our hand is strengthened by him only having a year left, if we haggle too much there’s a real risk chelsea or even United come in with an offer at asking price.

All the gossip shows even moneybags United are looking elsewhere because of the asking price and gossip that Chelsea want to shift Kepa who Frank used as an example for how much Raya is worth , sure it will all get sorted by September. :)

Yes, we can see that both clubs are looking elsewhere for their first choices.
however, if we dither and faff about haggling for weeks it makes it easier for either of these clubs to step in if they have to move on from their first or even second choices.
We just need the courage in our convictions to go for our first choice rather than wait for the selling club to be over a barrel on deadline day because they need to shift a player.

Yes agree , the trouble is the person holding the purse strings is not prone to throwing money around.

he is still under contract so they can ask whatever they want
And in 6 months clubs can agree for him to sign next year for 0. They can ask what they want, but the value might not be worth it.

Much like levy and his value for kane. It's what he's worth to us and not to others. Which is why I have no issues with them wanting the 40 million, but they might not get it

The transfer window opened 3 days ago. It's completely unreasonable to be upset about "how long it's taking" right now.
It’s not so much a case of how long it’s already taking, more so that there’s concern about how long it could take(and the pitfalls connected by our approach).
The most recent transfer in being a perfect example
