Yes, inclined to agree.. but even then, is he the only option? we tend to get fixated on a few players and get ourselves worked up and end up thinking they are must have. Myself included… but the club will, rightly, deal in lists and options. They’ll have alternatives to Maddison.
At this level the list of players good enough for where we want to be is very short. There's a handful of players and most will be unavailable.

They've been linked from the beginning, but Diogo Costa appears to be their preference.
Costa is a fantastic keeper, we were linked last Summer I believe and I would have loved it. I think he's class but for the reasons already stated by others in this thread, Raya just makes so much sense. He's got fantastic stats, is achievable and most importantly is Prem proven. From what I heard late last night, the fee shouldn't be a problem and we are actually a lot closer than media reports suggest to agreeing a fee.

Good to know. I was unsure of him, but his performance at the tottenham stadium changed my mind.

Costa likely came off the table when he signed a new contract with an 80m release clause last summer, no?
No way Porto let him go for any less than that.

Out of all the options Raya certainly makes the most sense. It's highly encouraging that we seem close to getting this done

We have a lot to get done this summer and this is probably the “easiest” deal (in that all three parties want to get it done) for a key position so that’s why hopefully we get it done early.

So by that Kane should be a cut price deal? Its what the selling club deem suffice not the buying club. Kane isn't worth £100m theoretically to the rest of the world but he is to us.

So if they want £40m and thats their price. You are going to have to pay that price unfortunately. Am not saying don't barter with clubs but sometimes there isn't room for bargaining with clubs.
I agree with this generally but in this case there is no way Raya is *worth* 40m to them presently as they have already signed a replacement in a position where only one player can play. If we had already signed say, Benzema, up top and promised him he could play then Kane’s value would probably be decreased a bit

Yep and i agree but you know yourself if a club want that specific amount they most likely wont budge but yeah i guess with it also being a GK and only one player for that position.

Sun article on Raya coming with a bit on hojbjerg potentially going out the door.

Out of our 5 first team CM's he's the one I'd want us to shift. Don't mind the bloke and he has had spells where he has been fantastic, but those spells have been few and far between. I'd say in 70% of the games in his three seasons here he's been average to shit.

Apologies for littering the Raya thread, I expect Hojbjerg's thread will be moved here soon enough.

Right I get all that, it's just a personal preference thing for me. Raya's big positive for me is his HG status. Him already being used to the Prem is a plus but we've seen players move within the league from small clubs to bigger clubs and fail to settle so that's a risk anyway (yes I understand it's probably a smaller risk but it's still an unknown). I personally like Onana much better (he's bigger and as I mentioned before small keepers make me itchy) than both of them, and Maignon a little better than Raya (again, size).

Ultimately I believe we will sign Raya as I do not think Brentford will hold to their 40M valuation, he's only got 12 months left ffs. He's a big upgrade over the last 2 seasons of Hugo and an even gigantic upgrade over ball playing Hugo.
It is still a risk but he doesn't have to learn the language or adjust to the culture, and doesn't have to uproot his family or move away from friends etc either. There are far more pluses, and far less unknowns than the alternatives.

£40mil is clearly their starting number and not their expected exit point, but what we do generally(have done many times in the past at least) is take far too long to get to that point. We start way too low and only increase in tiny increments to absolutely maximise the deal down to the last penny. It's why it takes so long and it pisses off the selling club, and sometimes the player/agent in the process and we lose the player elsewhere.

Agree a lot of plusses with Raya and think it would fit in well.

Let's just hope the negotiations this time round don't cause us to miss out on key targets, like in the past.

Sorry but you are ignoring one critical element which is time. I don’t believe Raya’s value has gone significantly down because they signed a replacement but anyway they have nearly two months to sell him. It makes much more difference to us than them to get the deal done quickly.
