I was at both games. Left my ticket behind for the away game but managed to get another just over face value from a tout. Pretty scary over there after Brian Flanagan (RIP) got shot(dead) in a bar. Well known lad at the time and Tottenham fans didn't react well. Home match was my best game ever at The Lane, cracking atmosphere that night, probably never to be experienced again. Stood in The Cage (left hand corner of the Shelf) about three quarters of the way up and ended up down at the front when Robbo scored due to the crowd surge. Those were the days! Now we can't even be bothered with the same competition.

I was 16 and watched it at home on the telly. Remember it well, when Parkes saved that penalty I ran around the room and then up and down the stairs like a mad man, incredible feeling. Graham Roberts was outstanding that night and it should also be remembered that we won without Hoddle who was injured and Steve Perryman who was suspended. Great memories, thanks Scutch.

about £38 million reasons
But why does the money matter to us as fans? What do we gain from that?

I understand that in theory, this money enables us to buy/pay better players and thus improve, but when we're competing with teams like Man City and Chelsea in particular, we could never has as much money as them anyway.

Arsenal are a perfect example - sensibly run, always in the CL but only once anywhere near winning it and for the last few years nowhere near the oil-money boys or even United.

better players the following season, the chance to watch Spurs play Barca/ Real/ Milan/ Inter/ Bayern/ Anderlecht/ Lyon/ Juventus in a competition noty a friendly, a bigger stadium over time, greater chance of success overall, less chance of doing a Leeds etc... it matters a lot to fans

Which is better than what we have done.

I would trade our League cup win for their run to the Champions league final any day of the week. If that means that I have missed the point of football then I guess I'm just a fool.

Did you always stand there? cos thats where me and about 20 or so mates stood every week, we were mostly of greek cypriot origin and thus alot of people in the cage used to call that little part of the lane 'Kebab Corner'

Stood there for years untill i got a decent job and became a west stand lower ST holder, boring ...but comfortable.

Every week, about 10 of us Essex Casuals, best view in the ground. Got hit by a big round candle once while standing in The Cage, which was thrown by Everton fans who had the whole end (must have been a cup game). Probably the most wierd object to be thrown at opposition fans. Stood there until the end!!

I remember it very well indeed.

I was 10 years old and sitting down in the front room with the whole family.

When it went to Pens, only my uncle and me remained in the front room because the rest couldn't watch.
When Parkes saved the last pen, i remember running and jumping around the room like a lunatic.

What a day that was, one of my best ever memories.

Such a shame that the UEFA cup / Europa league means absolutely nothing now.

Do you remember when the scum threw a petrol bomb at us in the cage one year,it just missed us otherwise we would have all been finished,it hit the fence and exploded on the empty terrace below us, thank fuck, after that game our lot went mental ,tipping over or smashing up any cars with goon stickers on , and generally goon hunting.

Were you there when it kicked off between spurs fans in the cage against Barcelona?

Graham Roberts - what a legend!

Funny to see it was Frank Arnesen of all people to get yellow carded for back chat in the first half...

Remember it well, would not have wanted to have been Arsenal that day! Can't remember the Barcelona incident though.

Used to stand up there quite a lot around 79-81. I'm pretty sure I was up there that petrol bomb game. I'd convinced my aunt it was OK to take my little cousin. I kept telling him on the way home "don't tell your mum what happened or she won't let you come again". Next day had my aunt on the phone "he's never coming to football with you again, blah blah".

That Barcelona game I was in the west lower, me and two lads were trying to gib in somewhere, found ourselves mooching around the west stand area, saw Pat Jennings and an entourage of about 6 people about to get let into a door at the bottom right of the west stand, being casuals we were reasonably well turned out, so just tagged ourselves onto the end of the entourage and walked in. Took us a while to find odd seats because the ground was packed. Sure Clemence conceded a really soppy goal, and didn't someone like Miller equalise ?

What happened in the cage ?
