Who: The Goat
When: 17th August
Where: SC

The Goat hears we're interested in Matt Doherty. Aurier leaving would clear the decks for that one.

Also that we're not in for Aarons
Very good player. Bit surprising but I think he’s great. 11 months older than our current first choice right back so I don’t see the age playing a huge factor if the prices aren’t too different.

Would normally think Wolves wouldn’t be interested in dealing with us since we’re direct rivals at the minute. But since they’ve gotten into trouble with FFP and have to adhere to some strict financial structures it’s not unreasonable to think they’d be open to selling some first teamers. And I imagine they’d be more open to losing Doherty than Jimenez, Adama, Neves etc.

With Min Jae links very quiet, maybe club wants him and Celik?
and he's homegrown (y)

I always rate Doherty when I see him but isn't he an attacking RWB? In which case can he cut it defensively in a back 4. Also as an (edit) Irish player that would mean he isn't HG either?

Irish

edit: despite being woefully uniformed, your overall point is still valid ;)

double edit: it seems like there is some confusion over whether he is homegrown or not. It seems he definitively is:

From a Wolves forum said:
I wanted to get a definitive answer on this one, so I emailed the Club Secretary, Matt Wild at 5.20pm yesterday! He emailed me back at 8.30pm last night and said the following:

"Many thanks for the e-mail – the Home Grown area is a bit of a minefield but if you have a contact number you could pass on then I can give you a call to explain or please feel free to contact me on the numbers below.."

Gave me his direct line, mobile etc, so I called him this morning:

He very kindly confirmed the following:
  • It is definitely 7 Home Grown Players required for a match-day squad this season and the EFL are quite hot on this
  • It's a subject that's caused them a few headaches already and we have been sailing close to the wind a few times!
  • Kortney Hause and MGW coming into contention in recent weeks has really helped the situation, particularly with Danny Batth being suspended and Jack Price leaving for America
  • Matt Doherty is definitely, 100%, classed as Home Grown!!!
I hold my hands up, I was massively wrong on this. I was interpreting the 2 rules as separate rules.
  • 3 full seasons
  • OR 36 months before the age of 21 (including the season in which they are 21)
Turns out the 'including the season in which they are 21' bit applies to the 3 full season part too! Which some of you saw already and where the confusion was coming from. My apologies!

So to confirm, Doherty joined in August 2010 when he was 18.5. He was then with us for 3 full seasons (end of first transfer window, around 31st August, until final game definition for this purpose), being 10/11, 11/12 and the season in which he turned 21, 12/13.

Very classy on Matt Wild's behalf to contact me so quickly and afford me the time to put this one to bed!

Just shows how much the club has come on in the last few years both on and off the pitch.

As you were.

In any case he's a great player. I think he would do fine as a 'sitting' RB or as a wing back, and if Jose wants him in, I'm all for it.

Just a brief plea to have a thought that if it can go in the player thread please put your thoughts and comments in there.

I'd like this thread to remain open. Being closed the past little while sucked.

So this thread already has him down as a 29 year old Scotsman, when he is in fact 28 and Irish.

Sign him up. :D

I apologise to those affected by mixing up two great nations. I saw someone mention hibs above and assumed he came from scottish football as a youth.

Also no one mentioned my point on RWB.

With the way Jose seems to want us to play - attacking down the right with our RB charging forward (a role which would have suited Trippier tbh) - signing someone adept at playing as RWB could be a solid plan.

Transfermarkt says he's played predominantly at RM this past season (34 apps), but can also play RB (15 apps), CB (1 app) or LB.

He's obviously done well at Wolves but was apparently pretty average before Nuno took over and started playing a back 5. He's a specialist RWB and isn't the strongest defensively - I seriously worry he'd get found out moving to a new club and a new system after so long at Wolves.

Plus would probably cost a fair amount and is almost 29 so would have no sell-on value.

Not for me, Clive.

When i saw the goats post headline ... i had a shudder down the back of my spine, images of the ginger pele flooding my vision..... Matt on the hand would potentially be a solid acquisition .

Can’t see Wolves doing business on Doherty, nor Winks for Spurs further forward- shot? Vision? With pre season training underway, I think, Levy needs to get his ass in gear

He's an upgrade on what we have and I'd say he'd be a more seamless fit in to the squad then signing someone who's new to the PL.

Wolves must be in a worse financial situation than I thought.
