Dembele I have always had concerns about, even when 99% of SC were sucking his cock in Autumn 2012, and I think there are major question marks about whether he would ever get in the mindset to move the ball quickly. Time and space and end to end football he might look ok, but he kills you against bus parkers with the time he takes on the ball.

If I was going to be really unkind and try and bait some posters, I'd say he was a central midfield version of Adel Taarabt... Give him one ball to himself to fuck around with and put on a freestyle exhibition of dribbling whilst the rest get on with playing actual football.

Unkind, and untrue, very good tackler as well. As some others have said, I don't think he is selfish or out for himself, it's that I don't think he spots the pass quick enough, when a quick release is needed, he ponders, has to beat the man coming towards him, then spots the pass.

I like Dembele, but I've grown accustomed to his weaknesses and wouldn't be sad to see him move on provided I thought it would benefit us as a whole.

Much, much, rather see the back of Paulinho though, I reckon there's still probably a remote Brazilian team that would throw a few bob our way to pull him back, even off the back of his world cup shenanigans.

I was exaggerating... Its a disappointing situation really with him, potentially has all the talent you could want but doesn't seem to have the footballing brain, vision and decision making to make consistent use of it (well that, plus a dodgy hip...)

I'd be more inclined to keep Dembele over the other midfield maestro that you mention though, now he really is surplus to requirements I agree. The way it seems Poch wants us to play I don't see where he will fit in and to be honest that's a good thing.

Do you think it has anything to do with his trade being a frontman who has moved deeper? As a striker, unless you're a back-to-goal version, you rarely have any options to assess in front of you, so you take your time to assess what to do when you do receive the ball. Dembele could be suffering from this, or he could just be that 'pretty good' but never going to be 'very good' type of player, which would be a shame as I feel the same as you that he has the talent.

I think both Paulinho and Dembele will surprise people under Poch. Can't judge Paulinho on last season or the WC I don't think. There's clearly a player in there. For whatever reason Dembele seems to have been cast as the bad guy recently which just seems so unfair. The guy has everything, and whilst his play has been ponderous for us, I think that has been due to being played in ponderous teams rather than him setting that tempo. He's not a Modric, he's not a tempo dictator, and I think he could really flourish in Poch's side alongside someone like Capoue.

Thats a tough one to answer... Honestly I think some of it could be just how his brain is wired and how he reacts in the heat of the moment. He will instinctively look to get it and take on his man rather than the early pass. Starting out as a striker probably didn't help in this regard, that's a good point. I also think another problem with him is that he doesn't have the self-belief when it matters. He will dribble past players almost dismissively, get into a good position... And then chicken out of having the shot (and we have seen he is capable of leathering the ball with his left foot). Maybe that's been a tactical instruction to not shoot, but I don't think so.

Probably a case of having all the technical qualities, but the complex mental stuff inside the head isn't quite there. If Poch can work some miracles with him and get him to release the ball quicker and start picking passes then fantastic. I don't see it happening though.

Plus we haven't even mentioned the dodgy hip and that's effect...

I am not sure the ability to pick out a pass is something that you can learn; it is more a case of being posssessed of an innate spatial intelligence.

I think you're right, I just hope though that as we wont be playing at a snails pace like we were at the beginning of last season with no off the ball movement, we will learn to pass into space created by intelligent movement at a higher tempo, which actually draws the opposition out rather than just allow them to watch us pass it sideways with no penetration.

I'm not massively convinced we will achieve it under MP, but we can but at least hope.

Very true, always easy to blame the individual with the ball but intelligent movement and especially inter-connecting as little units of two/three/four players in order to put 'moves' together is something we need to improve substantially.

Simple thread, maybe I should have called it Levy's Choice but hey ho. Pochettino has stated that we need to cut down the first team squad. Which 5 from the current first team squad (below) would you get rid of or be willing to sell to enable targets to come in?
Goalkeepers
  • Brad Friedel
  • Hugo Lloris
  • Michel Vorm
Defenders
  • Kyle Walker
  • Danny Rose
  • Younes Kaboul (vice-captain)
  • Jan Vertonghen
  • Vlad Chiricheș
  • Kyle Naughton
  • Michael Dawson (captain)
  • Eric Dier
  • Ben Davies
  • Zeki Fryers
  • Benoit Assou-Ekotto
Midfielders
  • Aaron Lennon
  • Paulinho
  • Érik Lamela
  • Lewis Holtby
  • Etienne Capoue
  • Andros Townsend
  • Mousa Dembélé
  • Nacer Chadli
  • Christian Eriksen
  • Tom Carrol
  • Sandro
  • Nabil Bentaleb
  • Ryan Mason
Forwards
  • Harry Kane
  • Roberto Soldado
  • Emmanuel Adebayor

Friedel
Chiriches
Dawson
Naughton

Dawson
BAE
Fryers
Carroll
Mason

I'd loan out the 3 youngsters and move on Dawson and Benny. The former because he's not suited to the style and is our weakest CB and the latter because he's past it.

Friedel I'd let go as well, but I guess there's no harm in him being the 3rd choice is there's no decent youngster. He's taking up a coaching and/or ambassadorial role I think now anyway.

Lennon- after what he did (or didn't) do in nearly every game last season l can't believe anyone wants him anywhere near the club come September! I know he's played a few pre-season games but FFS he was shit last season.
Assou-Ekotto- no brainer
Fryers- not seen much from him that says he's going to be great
Mason- loaning him out isn't the answer- sell for his own career/ playing time
Vlad- l just don't see him making it with us
Rose- l don't care if he signed a new contract see Lennon above!

All very well having a footballing brain, but you also need the ability to put the thoughts into action, and vice versa.
Had it said about me as a youngster playing many years ago that I could see the pass, but I just lacked the ability to pick it out accurately.

If this is a money making mission to raise funds then god knows, could be anyone except about 3 players.

If not and I pray not then I think 6 are easy: BAE, Fredericks, Carroll, Fyers, Veljkovic, Cebellos. Mason I'm unsure about yet-I judge nothing on preseason games-, maybe keep him as an addition cos no point loaning out at his age & maybe he'll work way into MPs thinking.
Then do a one in one out policy, MM for Daws and MS for Sandro (tears).
And lastly a decision will need to be made on Dier, Kaboul and Chiriches. If Dier is thought of highly enough that conceivably he could start all PL games if required then we sell Chiriches or Kaboul. If not then maybe a loan would be good for him to assure playing time.
