ok, maybe visualising this will help some of you guys a little. Say the league ends like this:

1st: Man U
2nd: Chelsea
3rd: Liverpool
4th: City

(Arsenal end up 17th after going into administration.)

Those 4 go into champion's league regardless.

5th: Everton

Everton goes into UEFA cup regardless.

Now, the above is all the European tournament spots awarded via league position.

There are 2 more UEFA cup entries, awarded to:

1: The winners of the Carling Cup.
If the winners of the Carling Cup are in the top 5, it will go to the highest league spot outside of existing European tournament awards. The runner up of the Carling Cup final gets nothing.

example: Chelsea beat us (cheating of course), and have come 2nd in the league. The highest place in the league outside of the European tournament award is 6th place. Tottenham get nothing.

2: The winners of the FA cup. If the winners of the FA Cup are in the top 5, it will go to the losers of the FA cup final. If also, the losers of the FA cup final have been awarded Europe, then the UEFA cup spot goes to the highest league spot outside of existing European tournament awards.

example: Chelsea play Man U in the final, the UEFA cup spot will be awarded via the league (6th place, or 7th if the Carling cup spot is also being awarded to the league).

example 2: Chelsea or Everton play Barnet in the final. Chelsea and Everton have Europe anyway, so Barnet get UEFA cup.

Intertoto:

Only the 4 highest placed teams outside of league awards for European qualification may enter the Intertoto cup.

'The Football Association is allowed one entrant being the highest placed of the four clubs finishing immediately outside the automatic European qualifying places.'

Here, I'm not actually sure. If 'automatic European qualifying places' refers to only spots 1-5 which are guaranteed league spots, then Intertoto will go to the highest place applicant in spots 6,7,8,9 in the league.

I don't know whether those places change if the Carling Cup and FA cup go the league... I believe they do, or Spurs would simply have said highest of 9th or higher or something.

That means, if 6th (carling cup) and 7th(FA cup) go to the league, then Intertoto will go to the highest applicant of 8th, 9th, 10th or 11th.

Lastly, I do not know what happens if Spurs win the UEFA cup. If we do, we DEFINITELY get into UEFA cup next season, but we may be taking away the spot awarded to 5th place.

You all may remember the fiasco with Liverpool and Everton etc and being 5 champion's league clubs from the premier league, and I'm not sure how that applies to the UEFA cup.

Liverpool won the champion's league and came 5th that season, but were allowed to defend it next season. Places 1 to 4 also entered the champion's league. If that happens again, 4th gets UEFA cup, and I believe 5th gets nothing?

As explained, the title holder of the UEFA cup qualifies at the expense of a third rate latvian team

whatever about where we have to finish to qualify for the Intertoto.....

I think we've made a good decision to apply for the Intertoto as obviously we are not guaranteed to be in Europe next season.

Also, failure to qualify for the Uefa Cup would obviously be a huge loss of revenue, something I'm sure we can't really afford to lose out on.

(But obviously hopefully we win the CC in 2 weeks and not have to worry about this)

i know it´s for the greater good but... did anyone else get that kind of shameful dirty feeling that we´re talking about this competition again? or was it just me?

Yea, it's mildly embarrasing when you consider we were supposed to be doing what Everton are doing

The places do chance, so your last paragraph there is the correct one.
