Listened to Ornstein pod today, the Athletic correspondent for Manure was on and the suggestion was made that Winks would be a good fit for them, nothing concrete but their England players rate him.

The whole cm is unbalanced and doesnt work. There isnt a combination I've sent that brings the best out of any if them particularly. Bit too soon to include Locelso. but writing off Winks is premature.

Team is desperate for a proper, mobile DCM. Which Mourinho loves. That'll bring the best out and restore some cohesiveness. (Is that even a word?)

I think he can improve his mobility and positioning and play as a DMC. If he can work on his speed he can be a really good player

Of course he can. He’s excelled in that position in the champions league at times. Pairing him with NDombele is the key imo. But above that we just need to function better as a team - less hoofing, keeping the ball better, pressing effectively, improved movement off the ball. Until that happens we could pair DeBryne and Kante in CM and still look clueless.

No, with De Bruyne and Kante we would look significantly better. How can you not see CM is one of our biggest problem areas and directly affects all other parts of the team? Even when Ndombele is fit and playing we look a much better side.

Winks played well in two CL games. That’s it. He wasn’t even MOM. I see a pattern of making excuses for him on here, but those excuses cannot exonerate him for two seasons of mediocre performances in the PL. His performances every single week back up the assessment that he isn't good enough, yet people bury their heads in the sand.

The fact is he just isn't very good. You can blame a two man midfield, a three man midfield, attacking players not making runs, chirpy.....it's all farcical.

If you think Winks is good enough to play for us on a weekly basis, you must be happy to accept mediocrity and say goodbye to CL football and ever challenging for trophies. Since he has become a regular fixture in the first 11 we've become a shadow of the side we used to be. We’ve dropped from being a CL team to struggling to stay in the top 6. He's not the only reason, but he's one of them. When you replace excellent players like Dembele and peak Wanyama with Winks you become a worse team, you don’t improve. We will never be a top side with Winks playing any sort of regular role in our central midfield. Since Poch introduces him as a regular starter we’ve declined massively, particularly in central midfield from both a defensive and creative perspective.

I am sure people are itching for Winks to play well to prove me wrong, so I can be shot down for my “extreme” views, but I know I am absolutely safe because he continually fails to impress or impose himself on games at anything like a consistent basis. I am absolutely certain he won’t show me up and become a mainstay of our CM and go on to be a regular for us let alone the next Modric or Carrick because he simply doesn’t have the talent.

There is nothing wrong with keeping him in the squad but it’s no different to should we have kept Carroll or Mason. He’s their level.

He is never going to be the answer to who should be Ndombeles partner. People need to drop the fascination. It’s ridiculous.

What’s your price?
I mean, if one of them was willing to pay £50m for Winks I’d be willing to let him go. As talented a lad as he is, he’s got a dodgy ankle and deficiencies in his defensive game.

Put the money towards a powerful DM like Florentino who’s good at interceptions and tackling and we’d be better off.

We're also in need of home grown and club trained players ourselves. That has value for us as well, unless we want to cut down our squad size to 17 players.

We need, and the players in our midfield need, to play a midfield three. We need to buy a Soumare/Florentino player to sit (Zakaria has said he’s not moving in Jan) and two from Winks/Ndombele/LoCelso in front of that. I think Winks would thrive there, as he has a bit of everything, he’s neat, keeps the ball moving, can pass, tackle etc, he’s just not a DM and I’m dumb struck as to why two/three top coaches think he is.
