I've never rated Winks but I'll say this in his defence: As this Spurs isn't functioning as a team at the moment, it's not strange that we see a lot of poor individual performances.

Anyway, if we look at City and Liverpool they are both playing with designated DM specialists in Rodri / Fernandinho and Fabinho. It's a tired ol' saying but it's really not rocket science why we're looking so defensively disorganised at the moment. We really do miss a fit Wanyama and Dier from two seasons ago.

And unfortunately this relates to Winks. Pochettino obviously rates him highly and he probably loved the idea of taking an academy player and turning him in to a top four CM under his guidance. But as shown time and time with Pochettino - his main fault as a coach is that he fails to acknowledge when he's wrong. He's just to stubborn to admit that his own decisions didn't plan out as predicted.

Anyway, this wasn't a dig at Winks per say. He's a good squad player and I love the fact that his Spurs through and through but I'm also certain he's not good enough to warrant being a nailed on starter.

Dier is fit. Why isnt her playing regularly? We have a manager at the moment who doesnt seem to set out a team properly. Plus it takes 2 years for people to get up to speed.

McTominay and Winks are age-mates. You're making it sound like McTominay is a newly found teenager. Jesus wept. By the end of this year both them and Ndombele will be 23 years old.

If you want to compare Winks and McTominay here's some facts and context. Winks has played nearly double the amount of games (112 vs 60) and of those games nearly double the amount of starts (71 vs 40). For a side that has finished in the Top 4 each season he has been in the squad. For a side that has reached the Champions League Final. He was trusted to play in big European matches and big Premier League matches two years before McTominay started to impress. And bare in mind those numbers would be higher if injury didn't end his season early in 2017-18 and forced him to miss the World Cup.

McTominay has only became a starter for United at the back end of last season. This season he has started all ten league matches and in these ten matches he has played more minutes in the Premier League than the whole of 2017-18 and 2018-19. And it's fair to say United's record since he came into the side hasn't been that good. Two wins in the last twelve games of last season, something like fifteen games in a row which they failed to score more than one goal, six months without an away win. He may have individually played well and fair play but if you're going to liken our shit run in 2019 down largely to Winks you can't pick out fucking McTominay as a force to be reckoned with. A soon to be 23 year old, who has played only sixty club games, of which only the recent ones have been memorable, is better than a guy who has started and starred against the likes of Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund? Bollocks.

Short memories and recency bias.

Have a look at McTominay for United. That is what you call a young CM from the academy coming through and making an impact.

He takes games by the scruff of the neck, he’s strong in the tackle, shows aggression, has a goal threat and is much more progressive in his passing.

Sure, they play slightly different roles or whatever, but come on, tell me one thing Winks does better than McTominay for example. 5 yard passes sideways to the CBs? Oh please.

You look at McTominay and you just think, there’s a future star there. A kid with a lot of potential. Winks is what? Older than Ndombele and just rank average.

I see people listing tenacity and workmanship as his key attributes ? how much lower do you need to go with the bar there. May as well bring a Michael Brown out of retirement ?

You've become a complete parody of yourself...arent you tired of making yourself look stupid?

Seems some people fail to spot when I’m on the wind up.

I’ve got quite a way to go though until I appear more stupid than you.

Ohh I was only joking...that old chestnut??

It's funny when someone calls you out for speaking absolute shit you resort to the 'it was just banter' response...yes yes of course it was lol

You've put yourself in this position with your unecessary incessant slamming Winks with your nonsense posts so don't try and play the victim here please. If you're in any doubt go through your posts in here, they're pretty shameful tbh.

Funny how many people have said the same thing about you...are you really a Spurs fan or maybe you're just a troll hmmm...?

Leicester are playing with a sitter (Ndidi) and two more progressive CMs in front. I think Harry and Tanguy could fit well into that dynamic. Our 3 starting CMs are very good - they're just not clicking yet.

It’s not slamming Winks it’s just accepting of the fact he’s not worth a place in the side. Don’t worry you’ll get there eventually.

I don’t recall ever resorting to its just banter by the way. I think the wink (haha) was quite clear regarding my intention with the post.

Maybe he's shown a bit of regress

In 15/16 he did 2.1-2.2 tackles and 1.8-2.2 interceptions per game, whereas only 1.3 tackels and 1.1 interceptions in 18/19

Good DMs have around 2.5-3 tackles and 2-3 interceptions per game

Anyone thinks he should have come on when we went down to ten? Would have been perfect to have kept that ball moving.
