The fact we play Arsenal is a good thing. After last night they are certain to have a monster fixture in the CL knock out before our game

Juve are probably favorites now. An amazingly well drilled side with genuine quality being provided by Tevez, Pirlo and Pogba. It will be a good test if we face them. With no shame at all if we lose.

has to be Ajax for me. think it would be a brilliant game. couple of former players, and a small affiliation between our fans and theirs.. makings of a great game..
oh.. and a long weekend in the 'Dam..

Napoli president De Laurentiis: "You know my thoughts on the Europa League. I think it's a complete waste of time"

Hope we draw them then :)

I can kind of understand where he is coming from. From the highs of playing in the CL to drop down into the EL could be seen as a bit of a come down.

It's one of reasons I hate the CL losers dropping into the EL. If you are good enough to qualify in the CL group stages. that should be it, you are out of Europe until next season.

No, what you actually meant to say is, "the comp just shit." You cannot be serious mate, how can you agree with this flawed, money making system? You really want filthy CL rejects in our league? What a joke of a system. It's an absolute disgrace that CL rejects get to join Europa, an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE! If they can't hack it with the big boys, then they should GET OUT OF EUROPE!

Never said I agreed with it, just meant it's going to be amazing to watch us hopefully play a top european side like juve, napoli or Ajax (as we should be year in year out) and beat them!

Lennon and Townsend should start every knockout game, European teams hate that kind of running directly at you pace

Unless it's 6-0

I though as we topped the group we missed all CL drop outs until the final 16 stage

That was under the old league format, when there were five teams in each group and a total of four games for each team, with each team only playing one match against each of the other teams (i.e. it was a lottery as to which teams in the group you would play at home or away).

Three of the five teams qualified from those groups. The group winners were then drawn against the third placed teams from other groups and the second placed teams were drawn against the CL dropouts.

Not necessarily. Because there is one more knock out round of the EL, the CL allows it to catch up by staging the round of 16 ties over four weeks rather than two. So they might not even have a midweek game before our league match.

Also, Juande Ramos's Dnipro have qualified. I bet he would be motivated for revenge and a trip to the Ukraine wouldn't be ideal. If they lose or draw with/to Fiorentina, they finish second and will be a potential R32 opponent.

Living in Kiev I obviously see a lot of Ukrainian football, IMHO we would have little problem with Dnipro or Dinamo Kiev, should easily get past both. On the other hand Shaktar if they are up for the EL would be very difficult, I would put them alongside us after Juve.

For a great trip few games would be better that Dinamo Kiev, if you know where you're going in Kiev it's a truly amazing place and the women there are unbelievable (plus I live very close to the stadium).

UEFA bemoan the lack of respect for the competition, yet they themselves make it appear second rate by putting teams that finish 2nd bottom of their CL groups into the knockout stages
