Not really poor. Not great either obviously.
I have to say that our passing at times is absolutely shocking. I reckon they should practice it a bit more. Also there were times when we just didn’t have any ideas what to do when we had the ball in their half again.
The players just aren’t very good for the most part.
This has to be parody, right ? ?

Thought we were decent. Worry thing is just how many countless attacks broke down with Son, he really is just playing horrendously

Was working all day and didn't see any of the game. Could read back through the thread but to make it easy could someone give me a brief run down of the performance?

Judging by result alone I'm very pleased as that was a tough place to go.

Started in a 3-5-2. Good first 25-30 mins. Dominated that period without creating clear-cut chances until the goal. Sat back in our shape for the rest of the game, looked a bit tired so couldnt counter effectively but had a few glimmers at goal. Nervous last 10 minutes but still no clear-cut Brighton openings. Some solid game winning defensive actions in the closing moments.

Boring 1-0 that won't be remembered in 2 weeks time. Given the circumstances its not too much of a worry after a tough week for the club. Onto bigger and better results and performances.

Did you watch the 1st half??
He does some of the worse things I have seen on a football pitch. He was clean through and could either pass for Sess to score or shoot. He kicks the ball out with his standing foot. Proper terrible. Though he got better.

Thanks for that! At this stage with games every few days I'll take any result we can get regardless of performance! Hopefully the rotation can continue good to see bissouma in from the start today

Sorry mate maybe you didn’t get the email..
We’re shit, everything’s shit, 3 points are shit, and we’re all going to support Brighton from now on because of sexy xG.

After such an emotionally draining week that was a very impressive win against a very good team. Brighton will give the other top sides a difficult time.

Some thoughts on the game:
Although we played 352 as many on here wanted I thought it brought as many problems as it solved. Defending with only 3 in front of the back 5 made us less solid than with the 4 in the 343 system. They tended to be very lob sided which left the other side vulnerable to a quick cross field pass. Sessegnon was exposed 1 on 1 numerous times in the first half. Also the CMs had a lot more running to do. Hojbjerg and Bentancur were exhausted by the end.

Given his superior attacking abilities I was surprised to see that Doherty didn’t get forward as much as Emerson usually does. In fact given that the 352 system is supposed to give the WBs more freedom to get forward and support the front 2 I was somewhat disappointed in how infrequently they did, especially after we scored.
Once again we weren’t as efficient in attack as we can be. Kane should have put the game out of their reach in the second half. It’s hard to call our passing crisp. Players taking too long to decide the pass then either choosing the wrong one or overhitting/underhitting the pass means we do not make as many goal scoring opportunities as we could/should.

On the positive side of things although we haven’t really clicked yet we’re still in third place. If we can remain unbeaten to the WC break we will be going into the second(elongated) half of the season having already played the majority of the tough away games. Hopefully by then our forward play will have gained some fluency in which case we will be a force to be reckoned with.

It was nice to see 352 for a change, and it helped us start the game very positively, control possession, and move forward. It turned out to be the key to winning it since we scored in that period and that was it for goals in the game.

Doherty was decent, especially in that initial period. Even though his passing was poor, he knows the role and is an instinctive wing back, so his positioning going forward is much better than Royal. As a result, Sessegnon also got nicely lined up on his side and some cross field balls from wingback to wingback happened. They can both improve but this was a better showing.

Davies started off well, but his run into their half with possession, only to turn around in plenty of space and retreat with the ball for no apparent reason was hilarious and atrocious at the same time. It encapsulated why we trailed off in this game - we lost our urgency and purposeful forward movement and replaced that with sideways and backwards passing. We have to show more determination to score. We seem to be playing with the hand break on.

Smashing win, keeps us in a great position.

I don’t know how MOTD do it, but they always manage to cut the highlights to make it look like we stole a result
I felt we were lucky to come away with a win. So ponderous throughout the side. With hardly anyone showing what they are really capable off. Harry scored again but is passing at the moment is not quite there. What some of these are going to look like after the World Cup worries me.

Brighton had not lost at home for ages (maybe since we beat them there last) so this is a fantastic 3 points.

You're not wrong about XG , this lot should give you a good night's sleep ..

Expected goals (xG) is the new revolutionary football metric, which allows you to evaluate team and player performance.

In a low-scoring game such as football, final match score does not provide a clear picture of performance.

This is why more and more sports analytics turn to the advanced models like xG, which is a statistical measure of the quality of chances created and conceded.

Our goal was to create the most precise method for shot quality evaluation.

For this case, we trained neural network prediction algorithms with the large dataset (>100,000 shots, over 10 parameters for each).

On this site, you will find our detailed xG statistics for the top European leagues.

Better.
Brighton seemed a little under par
but we started faster,
didn't defend as deep
until forced back towards the end.
More of a press.
We're hanging on to results
( and this was an important one
(aren't they all?)
Kept our enemy closer
and gave us a little breathing space.
Not impressed with Doherty or Bissoma on the day.
and Peritic and Richarlison have gone off the boil.

He seems to be second guessing himself all the time, actually at one point instead of just squaring a ball across the box, he may have increased it to a 6th or 7th guess..

Strangely we've had a mixed last 3 games yet there has clearly been a slight change in tactics and we have actually played better in parts.

We were well in the game against the scum and conceded 2 really poor goals before the sending off. We lost, no real complaints.

We pressed really well in mid-week and created enough chances to win the game.

Yesterday, we pressed better and were able to change the flow of the game a couple of times. Conte also showed some willingness to be flexible which again was refreshing.

I've been clear that I'm not a fan of conte-ball so far but I'm finally seeing some signs of development into something that isn't sitting on the edge of our box and playing on the break. The extra man in the middle yesterday enabled us to play up the pitch and control the tempo in the first 25 minutes which is crucial especially away from home. We had a lot more of the ball and when Brighton got on top, good sides at home will always do that, we pressed up the pitch and wrestled control back. When that stopped working we changed shape and again managed to get some control.

I still think we need a lock-picker to improve our creativity though as our front line just isn't doing it so far.

Yeah, I think he is just playing under pressure due to last season. He was a player who played happy and free and just stuck to his game. But now he is just trying so hard and it’s just not happening.
It is worrying, because we can’t keep carrying him as he really is detrimental to the team right now.
