Is Jose going to work out who he can and can't rely on? If he came in and made sweeping changes the atmosphere could become (more) toxic than if players loose their place due to poor form in front of him?

I say this with players that are highlighted on the forum as ready made replacements such as Ndombele, Skipp, Lo Celso etc have not proven themselves in the Premier league.

Proof will be in who replaces who in games coming up and shows something else.

Poch did Something similar with Kaboul and Adebeyor.

When he hooked Dier off after 24 minutes (or whatever it was), I thought 'Well, at least he's realised that Eric Dier isn't the player he wanted to buy for 50m at Utd'. Then, when he said that Sissoko isn't a CM player, i thought, 'OK, so he's worked that out and will address it'. I thought he might work out what the vast majority of the fans already know, and yet he persists with the pair of them in a pivot and the performances speak for themselves. It's not like we don't have options either but it seems his preferred remedy is to turn to Christian Eriksen who approaches a tackle in a similar way to my Mrs. approaching a spider (i.e. bursts into tears and runs in the opposite direction).

We don't have the players for a pivot but we do have some very talented players who would work very well in a 433 or dare I say, a diamond. There is currently a huge imbalance in the expectations on our CM players, so much so that hoofing the ball up the pitch has become our MO. FFS, get some players on who can control, turn, dribble, pass and tackle to at least give the impression that we can play football. Seems Dier has become our Marouanne Fellaini.

Who is he supposed to put in? People cry out for Winks instead of Sissoko or Ndombele instead of Dier or him instead of her (for example) and still the same thing happens. There is no magic answer, it needs better players, I would have thought that was obvious by now. Too many of the players we have are, for a variety of reasons, simply not good enough. You can't blame the players but you can blame the manager who inherited this shower of shit. Yeah, that turd won't float ;)

He could try changing the formation from the one that has seen us struggle to exert any control apart from Burnley. There are just huge gaps all over the place in our CM with Sissoko trying to babysit Aurier and Dier wandering about like a rudderless tanker in a hurricane. CM3 would give us a chance of getting a modicum of control in the misfield. I can dream.

Wilder at Sheff Utd, is getting a mighty fine tune out of his squad of players, who all to a man on paper are inferior to ours. Maybe it's down to way they are coached or maybe not coached.
Maybe its down to being able to shape and coach that squad every day for the last 3.5 seasons?

Well there's one sign that Mourinho is learning .

He didn't stop the post match Presser to make a long abject apology to Dier for hooking him early....progress !

And we know that there were all sorts of problems towards the end of Poch's tenure that contributed to us being shite.

I'd like to think Jose could do better.

You mean like the players not quite being good enough?

Think we ought to just wait it out, we all want to win but let's give the man a couple of transfer windows and a bit of time to sort it.

I understand the need to give him time, but our football or total lack of football during his short tenure has been dire and prehistoric

It's been like that for over a year mate, the only way to heel this is getting in some fresh faces.

The difference is that Jose is attempting to play direct to the forwards including long balls as opposed to Poch who would play possession tippy tappy football and play in front of the opponents defence, the outcome of both is that neither style has pushed us forward lately so we need new faces.

I would agree with you generally and hope Mourinho will learn. He has been honest in his assessments so there is a chance.
I guess that there were 3 reasons for the tactics yesterday.
One is that he has had success with the long ball finding gaps.
Add that to the fact that Lampard historically likes to play in the front foot and thirdly maybe Mourinho didnt have complete confidence in Ndombeles health and Winks has rarely been used as a creative CM
The key is can Mourinho learn. There's a chance considering the honesty of his interviews

It was clear to see that tactically we played into Chelsea's hands yesterday and they didnt even need to be that good. They sat with 5 at the back and there was simply no space for our front 4. It was so easy for them, and that is why it is so annoying that we could all see yet did nothing about it until HT and then the game was gone. Also, I am not sure why Sess was not on the bench as we had no one with pace to bring on to change the dynamics if need be. Yesterday was so disappointing on so many levels not just result wise and for me at least a dent in Jose's armour - I didn't see anything from him that suggested he wasn't happy or knew what needs to be done to change it around yesterday. In addition playing the front 4 from the start leaves us so short with options from the bench should we need to chase a game.

Of course. But in the meantime he could try some different systems/formations to suit the midfielders that are performing better.

As far as I can see we have 1 major problem area and that's the midfield, we've tried 4 different players and combinations in there and we are still having problems, what do you suggest?

I do think however he wants to get Ndombele in but he just hasn't been fit enough to play, we saw what happened when he came on late in the 2nd half we managed to keep the ball and create a chance for Kane, I suspect that when he gets fitter he will play more football which should help our football.

I agree the 4231 system currently isn’t working. Whether that’s just tactically, or down to personnel, or a combination of both remains to be seen. But Mourinho is no fool and has shown an ability to evolve tactically.
Looking at yesterday, it’s clear the lopsided defence left too much space wide. The midfield two lack quality on the ball, which put us under extra pressure from their press, and left our front 4 isolated, the ball was turned over too much.
I think we’d be better adopting a similar setup to Chelsea, go to a genuine back three but then have wing backs in place, and a ball player in CM alongside a destroyer, rather than two workers.
Alterntatively look at the Liverpool/City route, revert to a more traditional back 4, but then drop one of the front 4 back to add an extra CM in, playing a fluid 3 up top that can be either 4321 or 4312, Alli as a No10, Kane a No9 and Son/Moura able to drift between the lines.
Either way would give us more numbers in CM to play with greater control, because that’s what’s missing currently.

What we can take positives from is despite the Utd and Chelsea losses, out form clearly has turned around considerably, and to have the chance prior to the game yesterday to know a win would take us 4th, that’s not something I’d have seen 5/6 weeks ago. With the winter window almost open, we can at least make some minor changes now Jose has had time to address the situation.
Can’t he just use the tactics he used at Chelsea first time round 4-3-3:

lloris

aurier / new RB
toby
Sanchez/jan
Rose/davies

new CDM
Ndombele/sissoko/dele
Lo celso/winks/Eriksen replacement

Lucas/Lamela/clarke/son
Kane/new back-up
Son/sess/dele

playing this 4-2-3-1 to put alli as a 10 while we have no suitable players to play in the double pivot is killing us.
Either get 2 new CMs or/and ndomble fit or change to 4-3-3
