I dont get all this you should put club alligiences to one side when you just KNOW if, by a miracle (even a miracle couldn't concoct a situation like that but yeah..), we got to the final and won by a walcott/terry/milner/henderson goal; you would NEVER hear the end of it from their scummy fans and their opinion that "spurs players were shit/useless"

I think it's more to do with recent performance than club allegiance by a long way. The fact is, the recent England teams have been generally shit and apathetic in their performances when it comes to tournaments and, were it not for injuries to Lampard and Barry would have formed the basis for the current team. Hence, expectance of more absolute shite and ever-growing resentment to a bunch of over-hyped mooks. Seriously, on average, one look at the final squad when it's picked is enough to make me seethe usually.

Having said that, I still get behind the team on the day but it just usually turns into constant 'what the fuck was that?' for most of 90 mins during. I wasn't even particularly gutted last night. More a cross between bemused and nonchalant. It really was one of the worst competitive performances I've seen by an England team. Honestly. That's without any exaggeration.

Give us a team we can get excited by and some genuine hope of achievement then I'm sure you'll see a difference.

One last thing... Supposedly over 77% of TV viewers watched the match last night. Over 23 million I think I read. We're there, waiting....
Good point.

Had a quick read through this thread, so are some of you saying that because we're a bit shit, you don't want to support your country? Why do you not support United, City, Chelsea etc?

The question was about having pride in the team. No one here is going to change their nationality and abandon supporting England but there comes a time when we have to get past all the blind enthusiasm, false promises and ignorance and have to admit England is just not cutting it, then we may see a change for the better.

Personally, over the last 8 years or so, my pride and passion to support my country has faded, because the players pride and passion had faded for playing for their country.

In Euro 2012, our players at least showed some pride and passion for wearing the England shirt, and hence, my pride and passion for supporting those players has increased.

Its hard to support a team whos players really don't look like they want to be there wearing the shirt. (WC 2010 in particular)

There isn't a world class player in the team and Hodgson is a manager who makes his teams 'difficult to beat'. It hardly stirs the blood.

Our most prolific passer in the tournament was Joe Hart, and the most successful pass completion duo against Italy was Hart and Carroll, a second half substitute. What's to be proud of?

Agree with this. I felt it was quite symbolic that I was wearing my 2004 England shirt while watching the Italy game. That's the last time I can actually remember caring about England at all.

This echo's exactly what I think. This is the first tournament in a long time I've really got behind the England and felt that the players had pride wearing the England shirt again. I think this will continue under Roy.

I noticed early on in the tournament that all of our players were singing the National Anthem with a bit of pride. Of course, Rooney only mumbled along but that just about sums up his international contribution for the last 8 years. I think Roy must have said something to them because under Capello most players either mumbled along with Rooney, or just stood there looking gormless during the Anthem.

I actually think that Roy is doing a sterling job so far, considering he had next to no time to put a team together for the tournament. He has handled the press well, and has been refreshingly honest. He accepts that although already hard to beat, we are lacking quality in the attacking third and is looking to address that over the next 2 years. He's looking like a good choice so far.

I disagree with some that has said here:

Firstly someone said the fans haven't really got behind the fans since 96 or 98? I remember tens of thousands of fans travelling to Japan in 02, and over 100,000 travelling to Germany in 06. There was also very very large support in South Africa.

The above dispels the later reasoning that people didn't go to Poland or Ukraine due to distance or cost.

They didn't go because the team is a bag o shit. We were terrible in 2010,so bad a lot of supporters gave up caring. And it's hard to get excited about Roy's dreary style of football. Until he leaves - I can't see us changing. Fortunately for us we have an easy WC qualifying group - although I can still imagine San Marino beating us for possession lol.

Second and probably more prominent reason why they didnt go is no one has any interest in going to poland or Ukraine. You can guarantee a large following in brazil, maybe in 2016 too... (did I hear right its in France?) but Russia will be empty of England fans in 2018. I believe Qatar will be a success in 2022 as people will want to go there too.

I am a bit concerned about this, I thought against Italy the tactics were appalling, nothing was done to counter Pirlo's domination and this raised a few doubts along with the 442 set up.
He could have went for it and maybe we would have lost, but despite having a tournament where nothing was expected, he went for the ultra safe option.

I agree to an extent, but everyone and his dog knows Hodgson's methods. He is not going to change his philosophy and you would think the FA appointed him knowing full well how he would set his teams up.
If we line up like that in 2014, I'll probably be calling for Roy's head along with the rest of the nation, but for this tournament, it seems he was simply trying to stop the rot. A flat 4-4-2 was probably the easiest way to do that.
