What sort of summer?

I was passing time at work today by thinking about the summer and what it may hold for us.

I would like to begin by saying that if by some miracle we managed to get Mourinho in to replace Harry you can pretty much write off most of this post!

Right, so area of discussion 1: Management.
I think we're pretty much agreed/resigned to the fact that after the events of the last couple of months, Harry is leaving at the end of the season one way or another. This obviously presents us with a massive decision. Regardless of whether we finish in the top 4, there doesn't seem a large choice of managers for us. It seems that we will almost be forced to go for an "up and coming" type, simply because there are no experienced high level managers looking for work at the moment.

To me, this issue then seems to raise a further question - do we return to the continental model i.e. as well as get a new manager, get a new DoF from somewhere too? I think we would all admit that we know less about this role than that of a manager, so would we face a similar problem there? Off the top of my head, I think that Begiristain is still out of a job - maybe he'd be the man. Furthermore, given Rodgers' documented links with Barca, could the pair of them form some kind of Arnesen/Jol type "dream team"?

For me, the choice of managers comes down to three: Lambert, Rodgers and, wait for it... AVB. I know AVB is a controversial suggestion, but the way he had Porto playing was excellent and given all the outside factors at Chelsea, it's hard to judge him on his time there.

Hot on the heels of this is area of discussion 2: Players.
Assuming that we go for a younger manager, presumably with an eye on the longer term, I think we can expect a certain amount of upheaval here. Modric will leave I think and I'm not confident that we'll keep Adebayor. That's two big players who will need replacing. I think we'll be able to keep Bale for at least one more season and I reckon vdV will be happy to stay.

The squad will certainly be freshened up. The main question here is can we expect something similar to Arnesen's first summer? From what I can remember of that year, it felt like every day I checked Teletext to find out we'd signed another three players! Certainly there are many on here who feel that a large number of players need replacing, and a rebuild could be on the cards.

The first team could feature Friedel, Walker, Kaboul, Caulker, Benny, Sandro, Parker, vdV, Lennon and Bale with Naughton, Gallas, Dawson, Huddlestone, Livermore and Townsend and whatever new signings we bring in pushing them all the way. I'd also keep Bassong and Corluka if they wanted to stay.

Would that necessarily be so much worse than what we currently have? With a couple of shrewd striker signings (certainly possible - just look at Newcastle's recent success in that department), a young replacement for Luka (Joe Allen perhaps?) and an appropriate tactical system, I would say not much, if at all.

So, what do you lot reckon awaits us in the summer? I'm hoping for the dawning of a new era, and newfound optimism going into the next season.

I'm starting to veer towards the excitement of a new dawn. A new, exciting playing style and manage our players to new highs.

We've, rightly imo, kept with King for a long time as he is one of the best in the business and despite his sporadic performances we were so assured in defence when he played that it would have been criminal to drop him for a long-term prospect. His injuries have now caught up with him so it's a new era.

Time to build a consistent back four of Walker, Kaboul, Caulker and BAE. Kaboul should be made captain and the extra responsibility might just push him to that world class bracket in time.

In midfield it's a shame that Sandro was injured at the beginning of the season. Next season, all things going well, it's time to put him in the centre of the team and give him the platform to become a world class player. Bale needs to be developed as a left winger, not a flair player with a free-role. His pace, energy and crossing ability if used properly could give us a very string left midfield. If he plays deeper then we can hit on the break more quickly.

Our search for a striker continues. If we can get Adebayor then great. But we need to get someone. Saha has been an ok stop-gap but it's time to get people with potential. We need a more dynamic strikeforce. Leandro, Remy and others could be targets.

It's time for a forward-thinking, ambitious manager who can gel our potential into a winning squad. People have been impressed with Rodgers but it's Norwich, led by Lambert, who have been the most impressive newcomer to the Prem this season. They are well-organised and play good, varied football and if we go for a young manager already in the UK then he should be it.

I think I'm with you on Lambert (and not just after Monday). Others have made the comparison between him and Mourinho and then a similar one between Rodgers and Wenger and I agree (although to keep the comparisons in the same league I think I'd liken Rodgers to Guardiola). I just think that Lambert's apparent adaptability in terms of creating tactics best suited to each match within a general philosophy, while less easy on the eye than what Rodgers is doing at Swansea, will be more effective longer term. To extend the comparisons further, no-one is any doubt that Mourinho would be a success wherever he went - do people have the same confidence in Guardiola?

Were we to get Lambert (or Rodgers, or some other young manager) do you agree that we would also look to re-implement the DoF structure? Whoever we get as manager is unlikely to have experience of the sort of money that is probably going to be available to them with us this summer. Would a new DoF help with identification and acquisition of targets within this new price-bracket for them?

A new manager brings with it a certain level of optimism.

If the season is over within the next fortnight it will give us something to look forward to this Summer ( bar England winning the Euros of course! )

the most important thing about the summer...
Levy cannot afford to drag his feet!

If harry is gone, replace him ASAP! don't wait till after the Euros... when most players will need their down/recovery time.
then we can see who the new man wants to work with.

this summer is going to fly by with the Euros and Olympics imo... hopefully things will go well for us too.

Can we expect the usual joke of last minute dotcom shite we're now used to?

Nelsen and Saha joke signings?

Not looking forward to it
