UEFA should have a set of neutral venues ready to go if situations like this arise. It's pathetic that a side can gain a huge advantage like that. You will no doubt hear the visitors had to leave 2 players at home as the were not EU and cos of Brexit regs apparently, no time to arrange paperwork.
We (or the league in general) actually benefit from the English team doing well in Europe, so we need the others to do well in Europe now. The top two performing leagues gain an extra CL qualifying spot the following season.
You sure it's not this season? You're right for next season where we want English teams to do well for the 24/25 CL
You sure it's not this season?
The new CL format starts in 2024You sure it's not this season?
Yeah. Next season is the final year of the standard CL group stage. The 36 team single table starts in 24/25.
This post on reddit is saying that this season counts for the 24/25The new CL format starts in 2024
The FYI is just an added reminder for those that don't know this already:
This is all for the 2024-2025 CL season where the UEFA CL will expand to 36 clubs from 32. So extra 4 spots will be given out.
2022-23 UEFA competitions: best 2 associations will get 2 spots for 2024-2025 CL
2023-24 UEFA competitions: best 2 associations will get 2 spots for 2025-2026 CL
Because UEFA coefficient has a 1 year delay.
Last 10 years, PL got top two in coefficients 7 out of 10 times. La Liga top 2 in coefficients 9 out of 10 IIRC.
From UEFA website:
One place will go to the club ranked third in the championship of the association in fifth position in the UEFA national association ranking.
One place will be awarded to a domestic champion by extending from four to five the number of clubs qualifying via the so-called “Champions Path”.
The final two places will go to the associations with the best collective performance by their clubs in the previous season (total number of points obtained divided by the number of participating clubs). Those two associations will earn one place for the club best ranked in the domestic league behind the UEFA Champions League positions. For example, at the end of the current season the two associations adding one club to the Champions League, based on the collective performance of their clubs would be England and the Netherlands.
From the wording:
previous season: 2020-21 season
current season: 2021-22 season
next season: 2022-23 season (so 22-23 season would use 20-21 coefficient result)
As we all know, UEFA coefficient has a 1 year delay.
Same with this new 2 spots awarded. 1 year delay.
UEFA believe in "certainty" in which clubs going into the season knowing in advance which placing in their domestic leagues will result in which CL spot, EL spot.
That is why there is one year delay in coefficient.
This also prevent any controversies where a club in UEFA competitions could purposely lose so that their rival might miss out. For example, a situation in which if Spurs losing a match in UEFA would mean England miss out on top 2 coefficient. This screw Arsenal who is in 5th spot.
This post on reddit is saying that this season counts for the 24/25
This would make more sense because teams will know going into a season if 5th is good enough or not.
Heard a bit on this this morning. It's being painted as a Brexit issue but apparently it's been a thing since way before Brexit happened, and the exact same issue affected a player back in 2015.West Ham vs Viborg FF
Areola in goal, players rested including Antonio, Fornals, Benrama & ZOuma on the bench.
They have 12 subs named for this but only 8 last week.
You will no doubt hear the visitors had to leave 2 players at home as the were not EU and cos of Brexit regs apparently, no time to arrange paperwork.
Yeah the British system has often been difficult when it comes to people who aren't EU or Commonwealth. This isn't new.Heard a bit on this this morning.
