Castagne has 1 year left in his deal and already mentioned us and PSG as clubs that he could not refuse if an offer arrived. Atalanta will probably sell, as they are not a rich club. Castagne is probably a 15M or so asset.

They are still far better than us and we wouldn't stand a chance on Gosens.

The reason we are after Castagne is because his contract is running out and is available, affordable and wants to come to the prem. London is a big appeal to some players, but northern Lombardy is not bad either! Or milan if you want the city life. People could leave to us sure. But it's not a guarantee and we would probably be outbid.

Gosens is arguably their best player, though he is a bit suspect defensively and not sure he would shine in a back 4. 9 goals and 8 assists from fullback are insane numbers. Yes, I would put Gomes, Zapata, Illic all ahead. But he is up there, you could easily argue.

Gosens is being watched by Inter, Juventus, Chelsea and Lyon. Assuming he'd want to move, and the rumoured cost of him would be 35 million. For a player who probably wont suit a back 4 thats a lot of money. Castagne is less productive but is dependable, has good defensive figures and has a good cross on him. More built for fullback and we are talking around 10 mil.
I think he could fit in here with Mou. We have Aurier who basically plays the same role on the right hand side. Just need a defensively stable player on the opposite side to accomodate Gosens (a la Davies w Aurier, so maybe Foyth/Tanganga at RB). I agree it's not a likely signing, but he is the Atalanta player we should be going for.

Castagne wouldn't be a bad signing just because it's useful having someone decent at both RB and LB in one player, but he wouldn't be first choice for a UCL side.

Came off the bench against Milan today. Played in the Left wing position, mostly as a defensive player.
Showed his defensive game today. Won most, if not all his aerial challenges and positional good defending to cut off few attacks.
Really impressed with him - if he is what he have identified as full back option and we get him ahead of PSG, it would be great scouting coup.

Am I right in thinking this guy is not first choice RB at Atalanta?

Well, Hateboer has played most RB minutes;
But for past 3 seasons or so, Atalanta uses Castagne, Hateboer, & Gosens - they play a mix of 2000, 2500, 3000 minutes...with Castagne the utility player who can equally play well in both flanks. IMO, its hard to differentiate between Hateboer & Castagne.
Castagne is probably the most sensible choice for us - given,
a) his crossing atleast by this season stat, most accurate in Europe
b) Play both wings equally well.
c) His contract situation with him on last year of contract

Think this would be a really shrewd signing. Bring Castagne and a young talented RB in and we could have the fullback positions sorted for years to come.

Castagne gets a mention in the Dan KP article floating around today, but doesn't explicitly identify him as a target so much as it says he would not turn down a move to us. Dan KP does say that we're in the market for a RB, and Castagne is the only fullback mentioned.

Every year we get linked with players I have barely heard of and do a bit of reading and based on little decide on a player that I would like to see us sign.

For no real reason I have decided Castagne is the player we should buy this summer.

Looks the most pragmatic option if Aurier moves on. Would most likely work if we signed Castagne and Aurier because we're not overly strong at LB, especially if Davies gets a knock. Trouble is, somebody's going to be missing out but it's up to us to develop a squad mentality with our players.

Looks too much like Monreal, so I’m out

You jest, but how players look and emote is a much under-appreciated factor in a purchase.

We're excited by Højbjerg, in part because of what he brings to the balance of the team, but also because he looks like a midfield general should. Winks, bless him, is far too pretty to be a '6' and no number of stupidly-timed last-ditch tackles on the edge of our penalty area will ever make me think otherwise.

A player's physiognomy is also an important factor when a team has just conceded a goal. You want your players to show they care. It can be barely repressed anger (Sissoko), Gallic disgust (Lloris), headmasterly disappointment (Toby) or even 'oh no, not again (Aurier), but it must be relatable. There's a reason Ian Walker is despised down the ages and it's not his goalkeeping.

Which brings me to Monreal. A disappointed Monreal brings that combination of gormlessness and shock that makes you think he's at fault even if he isn't. He's Shaggy when Scooby has just eaten the last sandwich. He's a molerat with facial hair. And, frankly, if Timothy Chestnuts is going to give us the same range, then I'm out too.
