Given how short we are of club trained players the decision to sell Button for a pittance looks even more bizarre.

I agree - I would have assumed that either Gomes or Cudicini would be sold to reduce the over 21 GK numbers from 5 to 4 after the arrival of Lloris.

I can only speculate that the thinking is that next season Caulker, Townsend and Smith (all of whom given squad numbers this season) would move from under 21's to Club Trained (as indeed could Mason) - assuming all are still at Spurs - whilst if Rose returns he would also be classified as Club Trained, so next season we would not run into that problem (assuming Lennon, Bale and Livermore are also still here !)

Thereafter I suspect there should be a constant stream of say 0 - 3 players a year joining the first team squad from the Academy as Club Trained players.

David Bentley has joined Russian Premier League side FC Rostov on loan until January: http://bit.ly/NeT79K

So not much point in includimng him in the Premiership or Europa squads then !

David, thanks for THAT goal against Arsenal, but think you should go on loan and find a side you really want to play fior and move there full time.

Hadn't seen the Europa squad til just now. Interesting that there is no Gomes and that we went with a 24 man squad rather than nominate Obika as the fourth club trained player!

And yes, if we hadn't wasted a spot on Bentley we could have included someone like Ceballos.

Yup crazy on the face of it.

With all these sort of odd decisions one wonders what is cock up or what the logic might be - eg loan for Bentley was more likely because we can say to Russians that he is a member of our 25 man squad or to avoid possible jibes if we include a youngster rather than an international like Bentley........help me I am trying to grasp at what the logic might be !

I'm sure that we had settled our squads and the offer came in after the decision had been made. That is the only logical explanation.

On the question of why we only selected 24 for the Europa League Squad I suspect it has something to do with changes in January that we anticipate. If you pick 25 players in the UEFA squad list you can only make 2 changes in January (2 in, 2 out). If, however, you only pick 24 we are entitled to "add" a player to the squad as well as make the 2 replacements.

So if we are intent on bringing in say 3 players in January we will be able to incorporate all 3 so long as they are not cup-tied. Why risk putting in Obika knowing he won't play and possibly restricting your options come January?

At present we are limited to 24 players because the 25 man squad must include four club trained players and we have only nominated three (Livermore, Bale and Lennon). So the only way we could make a third new signing and add them to the squad would be if they were someone who had spent two consecutive years at the club before they were aged 21 and were then let go. Really struggling to think of a cast off we would want back...

Agree with that - our choice for the 4th club trained player is probably really between cancelling Rose loan, buying back Crouch or simply adding Obika to the squad.

Of course having 24 players in the Euroopa squad (or even 23 now Bentley has gone out on loan) is not the end of the world as this year as under 21's we have Caulker, Townsend, Carroll, Smith and others available who are fully capable of playing a part, so the squad is not that lean - and its ideal to blend in the younger players.

But I still think it would have been sensible to add Obika as the 4th club trained player, even if the chances of him playing were not that high (he did well in the season HR arrived in UEFA Cup).

Have a look at the squad below if there is anyone missing let me know.

@Jondesouza I had 10 mins in work so knocked it up ready mate

From the OP:-

Outgoings in red, Incoming in blue, will add the reported fees so we can keep track of spend.

EDIT: Added u21 players. i am not adding homegrown as the powers that be at Tottenham will know the rules and its pretty much a given that whoever is on this list includes the correct amount of homegrown players so that will take care of itself, this is just to keep track of our squad and numbers etc, will also add net spend etc later in the transfer window. Dawkins could be added to the attacking mids. There were a few more released: Nicholson, Barthram, or sold(?): Byrne.

Most senior reserve not listed is Fredericks, but Stewart and Archer are gaining reputation; can't see the remaining professionals troubling the first team just yet.

neither; he has graduated from the Academy but not really near the first team.

I'd agree with that - although I wonder if he might get one or two appearances in the domestic cups from the bench if we get relatively easy draws (eg Carlisle away last season). IMO Coulibally is the same.

We are pretty well off to meet club trained and association trained (under UEFA definition) jointly approximating (as there are slightly different rules) to Home Grown (under PL definition).

Squad above includes : Club Trained (minimum 4) – Caulker, Rose, Smith, Livermore, Lennon, Bale, Townsend, Obika (plus Dawkins) - u21's include Kane, Carroll

Association Trained (including club trained, minimum 8) - Dawson, Walker, Naughton, Sigurdsson, Parker, Defoe, Huddlestone
