Short or long term plan?

We had a plan - which was signing hungry young players from home and abroad. That was what Poch’s team was built on. And then we just stopped, thinking the squad was hard to improve, instead of buying young players to replace certain ones that we could sell or weren’t good enough.

Dortmund are constantly stockpiling young players for the future and then have someone ready to come in when they have to sell a star or replace someone not performing, while we just let the weeds get tall.

That’s the plan I liked. It actually started under Arnesen to a degree. As you say, Dortmund manage it, spending sane amounts. Obviously it’s a little different in Germany and I wouldn’t want to have their full approach ( hint of a feeder club for the big boys ) but they are to be admired imo.

Does anyone else think it’s a bit strange how we have very quickly found ourselves with the same problems as the Arses? From the stadium investment to the fact that our defence and holding midfield is nonexistent yet we get linked with buying more strikers (Zaha) - granted we now have the Kane issue and have needed a back up for him for 3 years but it’s just funny how all of a sudden a lot of the things we mock their side for apply to us too. You’d have thought the powers that be would have looked at Arsenal and recognised this.

Poch had us over performing for so long that Levy, many connected with the club and many fans believed that the components of this group were far better than they actually are.

What is also strange with Poch is that you look at our best side with Jan and Toby solid, pacey full backs giving width and overlapping in Rose and Walker, a midfield that worked hard and had power in Wanyama and Dembele and a creative forward line, then look at Liverpool now with Robertson, Trent, VVD, hard working midfield and forward line.
It does make you wonder why Poch seemed to rip that plan up when we were a year or so ahead of Liverpool and decided the diamond was the way to go! Such a shame!

It was often the case that we looked down the road and learnt from what they were doing ( certainly off the field anyway )

Thing is, they’ve got a serious youth set up there. Shows they have a plan, that’s one up on us!

As we’ve learnt the hard way, knowing when to sell is just as important as knowing who to buy. We could have sold Rose, Eriksen and others and had a lot of money to invest back in the squad.

he had to rip it up as we were either selling players (Walker) or they were coming to the end of being able to play that system (Rose, Dembele) and weren’t being adequately replaced to be able to continue with that style and system.

which is why we now see the same turgid, slow style under Jose as we did under Poch towards the end.

I've got a really bad feeling that Jose was sold a dud when he took the job. This is such a long way from the elite squad just needing a few tweaks to get it over the line.
Jose was 'sold' nothing. He back-channeled and politic'd his way into this job. It's obvious he wanted this position from all the glowing things he was saying on BeIn. It will come out just like it did at ManU about his dossiers and whatever. He took this job because it was the best one available for a dinosaur like him who had been thrown out of his last two...three jobs on his ear. That said, it probably has been an eye-opening first 2 months for him.

What's become quite apparent is that there is no clear plan on the recruitment side of things and Levy et al have been out flanked by the likes of Leicester.

As mentioned Dortmund are the model to follow

Its a joke how many clueless pundits there are on tv and the media.....

Anyone with any decent football knowledge would have known that for the last year or more that our squad was on the way down and needed re-building......Poch said so enough times.

All we were told is we have the best squad and who would get into our team. Utter bollocks , we knew it and now the experts are finally on board that we need a major rebuild and only 3 or 4 players that are here now are anywhere good enough for the near future.
That is an impossible task now, and unfortunately it will mean a few seasons of europa league at best

Levy put too much effort into the new stadium and not the team, and let us get to where we are now......a fucking mess.

I dont think we will buy anyone. I think eriksen will be kept until end of season meaning son or moura will be the guy in the middle up top.

Ideally, they should give parrot a run in the side.

I also think Jose may decide to ditch the FA Cup now to prioritise an attempt at achieving top 4.

No chance, regardless of what we think of Jose's intentions to stick around longterm he is a manager who is heavily judged on what he wins. I would expect him to prioritise winning anything at any cost, even the top 4.

Short term plan (until end of season):
Don't get relegated
Secure European football for next season (probably EL)
Keep Eriksen and Vertonghen happy until the summer
Get players back from injuries
Try to avoid January shopping

Long term plan (after end of season):
Sell the club

:ROFLMAO: The mourinho thread has been moved to the transfer forum. Looking like a great long term plan so far

This season was a write off before we sacked Poch. It was a write off when we sacked Poch. It was still a write off when Jose got some wins. It's still a write off after a few recent bad results.

Ultimately, barring a miracle or total turnaround in our level of play, we aren't putting in the performances that can get our objectives - ie. top four. Maybe we can get a Europa League spot by finishing as best of the very average rest. With the ball we aren't good enough, without it even worse, confidence is very low, and there is a distinct lack of hunger in the squad.

Not sure Levy sees it that way though, or at least didn't a couple of months ago - if you're appointing Mourinho it's as a shorter term boost in order to get quick improvements. But already we're seeing the narrative go from "he'll get this lot playing and sort them out" to "well of course he needs time to shape his squad and have a clearout". Well I'm not sure that's a job Levy had in mind for him, and is anyone really confident of Mourinho entering new territory and successfully revamping and totally reshaping a squad? I'm not.

Personally I think any starting point, and what has been largely forgotten by fans/coaches/board alike, is to remember what made us 'successful' and led to us making big steps forward under Poch and doing better than clubs with more money and bigger names. It wasn't really an increase in quality, it was that for the first time in my 25 years as a fan we had a Spurs team that was willing to roll its sleeves up, show some resilience, and put a proper shift in. We had eleven hungry, eager, players out on that pitch who would sell a kidney or their grandmother to be in the team and run through brick walls for the cause. Contrast that to now, I'd give you maybe three, and no more than a handful, of our lot who play like that. And none of the stars. Until we address that, which might mean making some very tough decisions, and get back some standards and stop accepting mediocrity then we aren't doing anything.

Welcome to Mourhinos world.
I've already written off the next 2 years with Mourhino (if he lasts that long)
Levy won't be backing Mourhino like his last clubs did.
Mourhino will either get the hump and leave or our players will leave in search of trophies.
I know which one I prefer.
