I am really saddened by how selfish some of you are being over the possibility of the games being called off. You may not care about our monarch dying because she wasn't your head of state, but Spurs are an English club, playing in an English league, with English officials and thousands of English staff who do care.

Shame on all of you that are complaining about the possibility of games being called off just because you don't care.
I am Irish and it is a sad day for our neighbours in the UK, I just can’t believe people don’t understand that there is somethings more important that football.

Spot on, I don't think playing football is disrespectul but logistically it seems almost impossible.
It's not about whether it is disrespectful to play or not, it's about respecting the decision and feelings of those that feel it should be called off(if that's what happens).

We've had posts calling the Queen a ratbag, giving her a right slagging and generally ridiculing. Luckily we caught the worst of those very quickly and dealt with it.

If people want to discuss calling the game off or not, well, there are people coming from overseas who have flights, hotels and tickets for the game booked. It's natural they'll ask. But as you say, there's no need to decorate it with pisstaking and bile. I mean, why? Why would anyone want to? (Not that everyone has but enough for it to be a thing)

Well next weekend sport can't go ahead at all, given the huge police operation that the funeral will entail. So I think they'll try really hard to get this weekend on, otherwise the league is really in trouble.

Sorry I just don't agree with cancelling this weekends fixtures. Have a minutes silence/applause and sing the national anthem and wave union flags etc but please don't cancel sport. Lots of people will have paid money for travel etc. And when will these games get played? Will they cancel all the games next weekend as well?

The first thought that popped into my (admittedly limited) noggin is a bit of a rescheduling so that instead of fixtures being spread over several days, they are all played on the one day. I'm sure there are obstacles to that idea though, but maybe nothing that's insurmountable. I dunno. There's also the idea that they are squeezed in after the World Cup, tag a week on to the end of the season. But really, we're all guessing.......we have no idea and are all waiting to see how it plays out.

Pretty sure the league won’t be really in trouble. They made adjustments to cope with covid delays, I’m sure the same will be done if we miss a couple weeks football here.

the league will be just fine shuffling around a few games but those who literally fly across the world to get a game on a very specific week will be screwed around royally

There was no world cup. Look at the schedule. Either they extend the season or we're going to be playing 4 games a week again.

There are a handful of spare midweeks after the World Cup that can be used for an extra round of fixtures. Not many, mind, at least not for those in Europe.

Yes but there wasn't a World Cup mid season to content with.

While I appreciate a lot of people will be literally devastated by the news I also think a lot of people overplay the importance of the Queen to average people (and football players)
For example, during the Man Utd. game yesterday they were putting United's performance, and the subdued crowd down to the death of the Queen (fans were fine until they started singing about the GLazers and then Sociedad scored a minute later)

Having said that i expected at least one round of matches to be called off (the thought of people travelling for matches doesn't even come into the thinking for these matters which are meticulously planned out well ahead of time)

How will UEFA handle it though? Will they expect English teams playing away to fulfill fixtures but allow Home teams to postpone?

Yeah I think in a normal season this wouldn't be that big of a deal, but this is the most condensed fixture list there has ever been.

I think there are probably ways around it, though. Seen someone suggest cancelling FA Cup replays again, which seems sensible and would free up some room in the schedule for the postponed league games to be played.

I think it's a safe assumption that any postponements will be played after the World Cup, there's simply no room to fit them in before. I expect it will just be this gameweek at the most, the EFL fairly instantly postponed tonight's matches but hasn't decided on the rest of the weekend.

I wonder what percentage of football fans would want the games cancelled? Not a majority is my guess. I wonder if even a majority of the population would.

If there was a national uproar at the football going ahead I guess I’d understand but I don’t think that would happen. Either way it’s getting cancelled so will just have to deal with it.

I don't think UEFA will want to set a precedent and all European games will be played regardless. There's literally no room in the calendar to reschedule those European games pre world cup.

Good post. Agree totally.

I can't see all footballing being cancelled until October 1st after the International break.

Love the way the rhetoric about player welfare and burnout took a backseat when the oil money came a calling. What we are seeing with this fixture list is at the bottom of dozens of reasons this WC should never have gone (or still go) ahead.

By all accounts they would have cancelled yesterday's games with more notice.

Reminder that Qatar bid for and won the right to host it by promising it would take place in the Summer in massive air conditioned stadia and there would be no league disruption. The whole thing absolutely stinks from every angle.
