Was just thinking that Pickford must be shitting himself, sat being used as target practice by his manager while Pope and Henderson look on a blinder. But then I remembered who the England manager is.

Pickford has performed well for England though. He hasnt exactly been crap.

True. But you should be performing well for Club, to be picked for the national side. Not getting in as part of a status quo. He's a decent keeper, but pope is better in my opinion.

The way they outlet to ASM on their left flank, I don’t think we’ll see Doherty against Newcastle.

You have to stop the ball getting to him because once he's on it 50/50 it's all over.

And thats where I have an issue with bringing it back to club form. I would totally agree if the club form was transferring into International form. But if the players are performing well for the International team id keep them in the team, regardless of club form. I know some may take exception to that and im fine with that as I can see both side but we cant continue to chop and change the international team - it wont help develop and strengthen the team.

I agree that Pope as an overall keeper is better but Pickford is better with his feet and we know how much importance there is on that.

That's the way international managers have to do it. How many posts on here talk about giving a manager pre-season/lots of time to get their ideas across? International managers want to get as much of a club feeling and understanding between players as they can but that takes several squad get-togethers to get anything like it.

That performance by Saint-Maximin was one of the best performances I've seen in the PL in years. Shiteh were absolutely terrified every time he was on the ball.

Thats why I find it so strange when the media talk about England and because the players form isnt that great for club, they want them replaced for th eIntl team. Cant chop and change every two months.

Harry wasnt great last season for three months but still played for England.

The one criteria id think should be for all - is that all players should be playing regularly. Thats about it. Thats from a match fitness view and all should be ok for this coming world cup but I digress.

Shilton played for England, about 3 years past his sell by date.

Wonder if West Ham are setting any caravans alight tonight in an ultimately meaningless expression of frustration and self-righteous, self-loathing angst

To a degree. A cohesive side is important, obviously, and a revolving door doesn't help. But it wouldn't be like that. We're only talking a couple of players here and there. It sets a standard and maintains what's acceptable to be in thr England set up. E.g. if you dropped maguire and pickford, it wouldn't impact the englamd side that much. Obviously swapping out the entire defense or midfield would.

I just saw that City are going to Spain next week to play a friendly against Barcelona. It's for a good cause (raising money for a motor neuron disease charity) but... that's not ideal a couple of weeks into a season, is it? Especially as we head into an incredibly busy period... It was announced in June, I wonder why they couldn't work it into their respective pre-seasons somehow.

I agree completely. For years we had players achieving week in week out for their clubs but it all went to shit when they put on an England shirt. As far as I'm concerned playing for England (especially in a tournament) requires a different mentality to playing for your club and not all players get it. Pickford does, arguably so does Maguire and I'd pick them both everytime.

Wonderful to see the attacking positive intent by Leeds and Newcastle today. Sadly such a contrast to the way we often play when we could be so much more on the front foot.
