Utterly insane that he cost that much money and has played so little

We paid for potential more than anything. He is one of the most sought after young talents in world football.

He should have played more but with how our season panned out combined with his injuries it’s totally understandable why he didn’t.

Look he's already 20, his best years are behind him, he's had a whole season to become world class with us but hasn't kicked on. It's time to let go.

How much did we pay for Sessegnon? £25 million and Onomah?

Sessegnon’s time with Fulham in the Premier League was none too successful. Two goals in 35 appearances. I think Levy really got taken to the cleaners on this one. Or is it possible that the deal for Sessegnon was more than simply a player acquisition? It really was such an awful transaction by the normally penny-pinching Levy that I wonder if there was more to it.

At any rate, Spurs can’t afford to babysit a player like Sessegnon. He needs to get out and play. He’s not an effective winger that can effectively challenge for a spot up top with the current first team, nor does he inspire confidence in defense. My opinion of course.

Not sure how much the Club would get for him in a player sale so loan is the only sensible option that I can see.

How old was he when he came up to the premier League with Fulham? Moura only scored four goals this season in a better team than Fulham.

Don’t think Sessegnon can challenge for a wing spot at Spurs. Who would he replace? Don’t think he can play the wing back role either. Too much pressure to succeed. Imagine the flack that would come his way if he made a gaff or more.

Loan, sell, or stagnate?

Still flummoxed how a tightwad like Levy would spend that kind of money on a player like Sessegnon that still has quite a ways to go to show if he can make it in the PL.

Seems like a nice kid, and wish him well, but...

I wonder who advised the Club to pay so much for this player.

Aside from the odd European game experience at Ajax, the competition in Dutch league football wouldn’t be great. We’d be better off loaning him to the Championship for a tougher standard and intensity if we were to even consider a loan. I personally see him having a place in our team next season but a loan to another PL club or Bundesliga would be fantastic for his development.
See, I think it would be perfect for him to get games under his belt and gain confidence in his own ability.
Ajax is a massive and well run club, he could learn so much from a season over there.

Thing is, if you imagine him being a success there, the argument would still remain the ‘he hasn’t done it in the PL’ The Eredivise, as we know, isn’t the best league to judge a player. So we’re left relying on him getting experience in the CL. Which as a cup competition could be limited.
That’s why, if he’s going out on loan, it absolutely has to be a PL team. The tricky part is that we’d also have to specify that we’d want him to play at LB, and it would be easy to see why a lot of teams would be reluctant to work with these stipulations.

I see your point but at the moment, I just think it's important for him to be getting game time, no matter what level really. I think the whole 'going abroad' experience can be great for young players, on so many different levels.
One thing we've learnt of late is that youngsters need to play to improve and I can't think of many better places to learn, than Ajax

Needs regular game time, if we can’t offer him that this season then I’d move him out on loan to someone who can offer him that. Way too early in his career to even think about selling imho.

A loan to Fulham would be perfect for him and Skipp. Neither got much of a look in under Mourinho last season, and that's hardly going to change when we improve the squad.

It could be the making of him, that’s true.

My preference would be for him to remain with the squad though, and play as an overlapping LB.

if he’s not deemed ready, then a PL season loan.

If that’s not possible, then Ajax.

He is made to play LB in an overloaded formation. If the ball comes to him in the box he has demonstrated he can score goals, he will no doubt be working on his crossing.

I think this year has just come as a shock to him. He joined a CL finalist team where the wheels were falling off. Players weren’t happy, the coach had been talking about leaving and he was trying to assimilate into a LB role against better opposition. He then struggled with injuries, had a change of management which had to prioritise the need to make us harder to break down, then there was lockdown.

Jose has said he thinks he can be as good as Ashley Cole. They will be working on his defence and crossing, goal scoring comes for free with this kid, he just needs confidence

If goalscoring comes for free for him, we need to use him as inside forward

Question though is if we can afford to let a young defender make his inevitable on-the-job learning mistakes with us?
Maybe the attacking "Aurier role" on the left would work, combined with a more defensive RB (e.g. Tanganga)?
We could also loan him out, although I reckon most teams would play him at LW, which I believe is not his best position long term.

Here’s the thing.

Lets say we loan out sessegnon for the season, which would leave us Davies and Cirkin as our recognised LBs.
Aurier is sold to Milan, as has been reported
We sign either ZekiCelik or Castagne (agreed terms apparently), and Aarons.
But a few games in, Davies does his ankle and is out for 8 weeks, let’s say.
We’re down to Cirkin as our only LB, or Castagne (if we sign him).
Last season we could play Vertonghen at LB for a game or two but we’ve let him go
Let’s not use Tanganga as a credible option there, as, in the game at Watford where he played there, he was really bad, and was targeted throughout.

It’s a scenario that might seem unlikely, but would place us in a position of serious weakness if one player got injured.
I think we need sessegnon more than we realise

Well if Mourinho is gonna get us challenging at the top end of the table again this kid at left wing back will be key I think.
Really hope we don’t loan him out and he is trusted with more game time to establish himself in the first team this coming season.

If Jose trusts Cirkin then surely we have to use him as a back up lb to the first choice, otherwise we’ll have another kwp situation where he doesn’t play for a season. We can’t stagnate Cirkin so either he’s back up or out on loan for me.

Mourinho has (allegedly) said that he's happy with the options at LB. I'd imagine Sessegnon is part of that which gives us Davies, Sess, Cirkin and maybe Tanganga. That looks a whole lot better than Davies, Cirkin and Tanganga. I think it's possible Sessegnon might go on loan if we bring in Castagne as a utility FB though.
