Player Watch: Hugo Lloris

Let's not forget he's still very much capable of making personal errors?

What was your assessment of DDG two years ago?

Obviously Lloris will make errors again, but the way he has bounced back is nothing short of brilliant in my opinion. And he looks as sharp as ever on those reaction saves. I was expecting him to start slowing down, but now I could see him staying at the top of his game for several more seasons.

I agree. I hope he will stay sharp and doesn't make as many mistakes.

I'm just saying let's not kid ourselves.

I think all keepers makes mistakes, some just more than others. And Lloris have done plenty in the past.

I do wonder if that is partly based on the fact that you probably watch Spurs more than other teams?

Lloris had a poor 17/18-season in terms of high profile errors, I was as frustrated as any, but I would like to see stats showing he is in general error prone. Especially considering his very aggressive style early on in his career.

His style is at least occasionally a bit clumsy. Like that one cross against Leicester - so my hypothesis is that he looks "worse" than he is in terms of making errors.

For me has always been a top keeper, one of the best shot stoppers out there. Without a doubt though the amount of errors he was making has got more and more season on season, but hopefully something has changed and he can keep these to a bare minimum again.

Without a doubt?

In the PL last season he got registered 1 error leading to goal. This year 2. Not exactly a huge deal.

Not suggesting that stat is perfect, but I think "without a doubt" is slightly too strong of a way describing his evolution as a goalkeeper.

He was good before the league was shut down, and has been back to his very best since the restart. Statistically, he's been one of the best GK in Europe this season...

So, if I understand that graphic correctly, Lloris "shot-stopping" performance has been better than Alisson (who really hasn't been tested as much as Hugo) and way better than Ederson (who has faced shots of similar difficulty to Hugo's).

So, is there anyone here who still would prefer us to sign one of those two (if we could) while getting rid of Hugo?

With Jose as manager, I'm fine with Lloris. If we were switching to play out from the back more, I'd want Allison. But I have seen all 3 keeps make some howlers this year, nobody is perfect but I think Hugo fits our style better under Jose than under Poch.

I had no idea what goals prevented was so I looked it up and it’s actually an interesting stat.

For those like me who have never seen it before, it is calculated from the difference between aggregate xGOT faced [expected goals on target] and total goals conceded.

Another indicator of how strong Lloris has been for us this season, especially seeing him above Henderson who has been accredited for a significant role in Sheffield United’s defensive record.

Have always said his shot stopping is second to none but trying to play out from the back and never clearing our lines was a brown trouser event every match.
I said when Jose was appointed he'll be a better keeper with him, and probably a happier one, and that seems to be the case.
I've stopped getting skiddies in my pants as well so everyones happy :)

Not one keeper doesnt make a mistake or error... theyre all capable of fuck ups, the same as every player - the issue is when a keeper messes up it is more prominent and can lead to a goal.

Oblak for me is the best keeper there is, we can spend 110m on him :)

Obviously but some make more than others and these days a HHIUUUGGEEEEE proportion are self inflicted and easily avoidable. For example, when I was a kid and playing, it was taken as a given that throwing it out to the oppositions striker was a bad idea but it seems to be all the rage now ;)

I love Hugo and thank heaven we have him, as whilst like any keeper he is capable of a brain fart, I would not swap him for anyone.........

Except Jan Oblak. He is a level above everyone in my very humble opinion.

But Hugo, has been impressive and it's clear him and Jose are speaking the same language. It was a major worry with Jose coming in considering how close to Poch Hugo is. Well played.

As you say ‘all keepers’ make mistakes. I’m glad Hugo has rediscovered his top form to hush that strange Pro-gazzaniga mob that formed here.

Hugo Lloris overperformed his xG2 by 31% in the Premier League this season, higher than any other goalkeeper
