Always been a big supporter of DS but I am worried. He has never achieved any level of consistency and is still making the same mistakes. Considering how poor he is on the ball you'd at least want a level of defensive solidity from a £40M centre back.

Probably not a market for him there at present though. Would be great to get two centre backs that can actually defend

I said prior to the game that this is the type of game that I could see him struggling in. Doesn't seem to have anywhere near that level of assertiveness or calmness that you see with the better CB's these days. He's erratic on and off the ball.

I think he'd look shaky even with Van Dijk beside him, personally.

A lot of people have been singing his praises since he arrived, and even before he arrived. Poch was a defender and a good defensive coach.

Now we have the Special One who when asked about defensive tactics, he responds by saying its everyone's job to defend, and he doesn't believe in DMs.

We don't seem to have improved at all under Jose, least of all our defense. So a player made a mistake, we still would have lost without his mistake.

We were at full strength, and lost to Sheffield.

We haven't improved under Jose and its not DS's fault.

Sorry, I should have posted that in Jose's thread.

I can't see how anyone can come up with one scapegoat after a performance like that.

Dier by name is Dier by nature in a back 4.

Feel sorry for Davidson in that back line
Funnily enough I saw it the other way round - not sure what Sanchez offers to be honest? Hopefully he’ll improve as he gets older as he’s still relatively young for a centre back

Unquestionably lacking some confidence but he’s not helped nor the finished article or has the experience or arrogance to be The Man

Sorry but you could buy a 500 million pound centre back and he'd be a shambles in the side.

Sanchez and our other defenders looked good originaly because they had strong very quick fullbacks either side
A monster of a dm Infront of them, and great team organisation with high off the ball work rate from everyone.

Ndombele gets digs , but I saw Kane, bergwjin strolling around not defending from the front and sissoko just not paying attention to holes in the backline ( to be fair to him he isn't a dm )

Davinson is a weird defender, he was good against United and class against Liverpool at home earlier in the season. It’s like he raises his game when he’s facing fast skilful forwards but struggles against an old fashioned target man, which is surprising given his attributes. If I’m honest I don’t know how to feel with him, which is the same with a lot of our players.

Wish he was doing better. I love the guy and thought he he great potential but he gets bullied easily, he gets beaten too easily and positionally he’s not the best.
Improving yes but still not where we hoped / need him to be

He's only 24 years old which for a centre back is very young. Not every defender is a Varane.
Wow is he still only 24 ok let’s keep at him plenty of time to peak! But we could still do with signing a top one more in their prime now to play alongside him with dier and toby And tanganga stepping in when needed

I like DS. He’s limited on the ball but is great against the technical fast sides which are usually the top teams. He is utter trash at defending target men though. He needs to be played accordingly.

I don’t know, he wasn’t good but neither was any of the Sissoko, Dier, Davies group, too. It was basically a collective “effort” to destroy any progress we thought we had made since the restart. Part of me hopes Sissoko was carrying an injury when he just watched the 2nd goal happen; I know he had ran with the ball right before the move but he literally was a bystander. Dier’s positioning was terrible, Sanchez was naive at times and out of position routinely, Davies just was so passive it was bizarre. Not sure if we should deem the Sanchez time at Tottenham over when basically every player tasked with providing some resistance in defense was awful.

He is another player who our system does not suit. We play too deep with too big a gap between our midfield and centre backs.

A 433 with a high line makes the most of his main asset which is pace.

It would also offer him the protection of a holding midfielder.

Aurier playing the role he does also doesn't help him.
