Seeing as Verts was injured, the right backs were a mess and the left backs not that much better its possible maybe he was our best defender, its no criterion for me though. Its a critical role and on top of that we payed 42 mil for him. Its feast or famine with him all in the same game, world class tackles and bad positioning, hesitant kicking

How old is he?

That's only talking about possibilities. As time goes on I see he hasn't really gotten better. I liked him when he came. I watch how he kicks the ball hesitantly nearly every game,I watch his positional sense.I think its not easy to learn those things,he needs a sense of where to be as each situation is a dynamic you cant put that on a X's and O's board as the attacking is a moving target. He can learn from experience but its still about increments of learning...and he has been the same.Infact he looked more assured when he came.
I do want to balance that with he can do some great tackles

Is no coincidence that he has had the most touches in recent games. Teams are happy for him to have the ball and be the one to start our attacks. He is really poor on the ball, to the point I don’t want him making anything more than a 5 yard pass. He isn’t helped by having Aurier and Sissoko as his nearest players. We really need a player that can pick the ball up from the defence if he is playing.

He has the odd positional error, both in anticipating runners and in leaping to head the ball, but he's 23, that's very young to be playing his third season as a starting Premier League centre back and he has a lot of development ahead of him.

You know that lad up at Liverpool, Virgil, well he's widely considered not just the world's best centre back but almost impossible to run past with the ball. Look at this from him at the age of 24...

I'm shocked those Premier League graphics were still in use so recently. So dated.

He’a always been a bit jittery. He was pretty good in his first season considering his age and lack of PL experience, but he always struggled with the ball at his feet and when he was closed down.

Unfortunately that’s one aspect that is very difficult to coach. You can improve general defending, but normally defenders either have that composure or don’t.

It's Mourinho's job to help him out. Letting our CM2 get dragged all over the place is going to expose our CBs and any decent manager would target Sanchez in that situation. It's another reason why we need a top quality DM in there, preferably in a CM3 in games where we expect to be on the back foot.

Please no more 5 yds passes from him after he looks around for 5 minutes
I really think he is nervous. When he trusts himself his instincts are really good

Mourinho himself has refused to comment on our defenders, sighting the fact that defending is a "team process".
