are we 100% he is not another Fazio? like the guy above I try to avoid youtube comps partly due to superstition, partly the default music and partly because they mean fuck all usually.
There is always a risk of a new signing not living up to expectations, but you could just as easily have said "are we 100% sure he won't be a flop" or have used a different example of a failed CB signing who doesn't happen to be Argentinian (Chiriches, Wimmer, Bassong etc.). It doesn't seem coincidental...

It would be understandable if you had reason for concern that Romero shared specific weaknesses with Fazio (lack of pace / agility / reflexes / passing ability etc.), but clearly that's not the case, because you haven't even watched highlights of him to form any such view upon. The only apparent similarity seems to be that both are Argentinian CBs.

There would be more logic to worrying about whether Kounde would be another Fazio, as both attracted our interest while playing for the same club in the same league. My guess is you're not "100% he isn't another Kaboul" though. ?

Atalanta has a very particular defensive system, the 3 defenders always plays
“ a uomo” they follow the striker in every zone of the field. He’s too aggressive, I have doubt over his adaptation in traditional defensive system. That’s the reason why I’m concerned, obviously I hope to eat my word and I hope that he will be named even best PL defender
This is fair and understandable. I’d be a little more apprehensive too if he didn’t have a great Copa America in a back 4 next to a declining Otamendi. But he ended up in the TOTT and dominated Brazil in the final. Faultless throughout the tournament in a different system to his club.

Skriniar, De Vrij, Koundè, Kimpembè, Laporte, Gimenez. And many others probably

You forgot van djik, although I do see him as a risk after his injury…

People are right to be reserved, but how can we doubt a player based on his past season as being named serie A’s best defender, key member of an over achieving Atlanta side, and a key member of the Copa America winning Argentina side?
He may turn out to not suit us or the league, but you can’t argue with the signing on paper.

How is he for Argentina?

An Argentinian centre back who was way more successful in Serie A than with us and came highly rated.
Don't think Fazio was ever especially highly rated. He was always seen as a bit of a budget 4th or 5th choice option, a bit like Stambouli who we also bought in the same window. They were both cheap stopgaps during a period in which Levy was always looking to keep spending down. The one we really wanted IIRC was Musacchio but he was too expensive, so we eventually settled for Fazio as he was only 9 million.

While everyone naturally hoped he would do well, I don't recall any fanfare or excitement when he arrived.

Tbh I don't think he was even that highly rated in Italy either. He was much better over there as the pace and style of the league suited him, but I don't think he was ever considered a particularly special CB by Roma fans.

Jules Kounde.

I think the ideal partner is a pretty fast player who can cover a lot of ground because Romero is likely to step towards attackers so you need someone that can fall in behind and cover him.

I didnt think Kounde is one to sit back? from what i remeber from him last season he bursts alot going forward and played alot of time in the centre spot compared to his partner at seville, who was more further back?

I think he was talking about that defensive moment of a game when we are not having a ball and defending.
And you are talking about attacking moment, when we have the ball and we are attacking. Sorry for my terrible language. I need some sleep ?

Pretty mad that he made it into the TOTT when he only played 3 matches. Here's his performance in the final in a back 4 vs the likes of Neymar for anyone that is curious.

Generally looks very aggressive and assertive - does very well in some one on one situations against Neymar by getting in there and winning the ball early and appears to read the game well. Passing and technique look fine if not spectacular - he makes one great raking pass down the line at one point and another decent one into the channel, but otherwise tends to keep things simple. There's one dodgy moment where he almost gives the ball away cheaply after a poor touch but he recovers well.

Doesn't seem to look out of place in a back 4 to me based on this game at least.

What’s up Spurs. Do you know who we get? We got a defender who outplayed: Skriniar, De Vrij, De Light, Bonucci, Chiellini, Romagnoli, Koulibaly in serie A by having the highest rating among all serie A defenders + best defender.

Dias, Varane, Ramos, Alaba, Marquinhos, many more in CL by having the highest rating in Champions league among all of them with the rating of 7.67 (and taking Atalanta to their highest position in their CL history).

Marquinhos, Thiago Silva, Yerry Mina, Godin, and his fellow Spurs Davinson Sanchez in Copa America by being named in the team of the tournament + a winning trophy.

Has Romano ever jumped the gun with a 'here we go' and got it wrong? Can't happen very often.

Seems like he waits until a deal is all but confirmed before he uses his precious catchphrase (barring failed medicals, etc). Generally seems to have a very high hit rate when he says it as presumably he wants to protect his brand.

Didn't he say Poch was done?
