But Bale was 23 (I think) and had outgrown us.

Dele isn't at Bale's level yet and, as a club, we've stepped up a level.
I would seriously doubt Alli is going anywhere in the next 18 months.

After that I don't disagree with you but, and it is a big but, our circumstances as a club may have changed drastically.
The new stadium, on-going CL participation, and possible silverware may close the gap between Alli's ambition and our ability to deliver that reducing his likelihood of moving on.
I don't think Alli will go. Not for a few years. But trying to put anything morale into a footballer staying is not right. He will stay if it's good for his career. Full stop

You're saying every footballer is immoral?

Winning the odd trophy would keep him here better than throwing money at him IMO. Levy won't 'break the bank' to keep anyone though, and rightly so. Unlike RM we can't rely on frequent dodgy bail outs to keep us up and running.

Like everyone, they will thinking about themselves and there career. In the last hour Payet has gone on strike and wants to be sold, yet he signed a 5 year deal in the summer. It happens again and again. I'm not saying Alli is like that, but we have no idea right? We don't know him? Saying he's had this childhood means he won't leave is complete rubbish. He might stay, he might go one day. Enjoy him now and don't get too attached as football has changed

Exactly no-one knows what his intentions are including you or me so coming out with absolute statements saying that he will stay for the good of his career, full stop is contradictory and speculative.

Yeah, I think us fans would do well not to fall into the trap of thinking this or that player is "different". Bottom line is, a footballers career is short and they want medals and to maximise their earnings. Hopefully in that order, but for some they are just as important as each other.

I don't get the feeling that our players are motivated by money, but they will still want success and we shouldn't think Alli will be have special loyalty because he's a "good lad", "down to earth", "family man" etc. All of the things Bale was.

Just to remind you... Bale was 24 when he's gone...

And Dele is???

I don't think Alli is going to leave now for several reasons. Was just pointing out that looking at how down to earth he is etc is irrelevant, as we heard all the same arguments when the Bale saga was going on.

Understandable. I'm pretty sure that non of us think that he's gonna stay with Spurs till the end of his football days ;).

Bale was feared internationally as well at club level.
Proved himself in the CL too.
Alli would be a bit of a risk for the big European clubs unless we were giving him away.

We need to win trophies and compete in the CL regularly to keep all our top players happy. It will be ok while they're still young but it won't be too long before they get impatient. We're in a good position now so I expect our top players to be here for a couple of years yet.

Alli is just flavour of the month, next will be Kane or someone else. Our players will always be linked with the top clubs since that's the level they are now. We're in a much stronger position to reject than we were in the past. However even other top clubs like A.Madrid lose their top players.

I think a few factors will determine whether our top players stay or leave.

1. The manager staying at the club
2. Progress being made by the club and himself.
( defined as better players joining the squad , potential for winning trophies and medals, his development as a player )
3. His agent.
4. His missus and his family.

Cmon, you missed the no1. Money. Even ex footballers say that was the most important thing. They treat football as a job

I thought (and could be wrong) that Bale played nineteen times in a losing Spurs side before we won a game that he played in?. I don't think we have lost a game where Dele started but again i may be wrong on this as well.

Dele is far ahead today, on where Bale was on games, goals for appearances made. In fact he's in front of Lampard, Scholes and Gerrard.

Far more talented and an impact player than Bale game for game.

Bit harsh to "D'oh" the article poster, as it was a good read even if we don't agree with everything in it!

@Gaz_Gammon

Can you copy the text from the article as well as putting a link?
I feel dirty clicking daily mail links and adding to their hit numbers.

You know where the article comes from, you don't need to reply at all, and your repetitive whining would suggest even to the occasional poster in here knows what your views on the DM are.

Why you persist on whining like a banshee about it is beyond me.

We have gone a different way with our team building in the main
and I love this slow build with some of our own and youth
under a talented up and coming Manager
who himself will be subject to increasing pressure.

For the moment it is holding firm
but could easily crumble quite quickly
if we don't match our players aspirations
on the field and in their bank accounts.

Dele is a special case due to his age and quality.
Over the years I have tried not to get too attached to players.
Never had time to get attached to Managers.

We could probably get over one or two leaving
but not Kane or Dele.
They represent the new ethos at Spurs.

But you know how it is,
they meet up with Milner, Sturridge and Henderson at England gatherings
and they say 'How much!' because they're on double
and it eats away at you until something goes wrong
and then it bites the club on the rear.
Is this a poem?

He's going to be one of the best players in Europe over the next ten years so I'm hoping he'll stay with us. The same was true of Bale and even Modric and we couldn't keep them. We need to show him he can compete in the Champions League if he stays with us. That's why Bale left. Offer enough money and put a good enough team together and he's got reason to move. If we don't qualify for the Champions League and don't get close to silverware other clubs will make him offers.
