We'd better enjoy the shit show which is United for as long as we can, because I saw on SSN, Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to buy a 'minority share' of the club, which may well eventually turn into all of it. He says he's always been a United fan. Oh crap.

Hmmm, let's see. Their share price went up yesterday, on the back of that news, after nosediving for months. Ratcliffe loves a bit of publicity going on the last few months. They are on a bad run and loads of negative news coming out of the club. Saying they are being sold or whatever is pretty easy clickbait.

They would certainly have been considered the top English club at times during Matt Busby’s tenure.

And they have been the best supported club in the country since the Charlton, Best, Law era in the mid / late 60’s - if not since the Busby Babes era and the Munich tragedy in the late 50’s.

With that team they would likely have won the European Cup long before 1968. I also think the World Cup in Chile in 1962 might have ended up being a bit more interesting too.

No guarantees a new owner gets them back to old glories.

Radcliffe is not exactly going all in at Nice.

We were mostly much happier when ENIC took control from Sugar, as he had zero vision with the club, but it took ENIC a long time to get things right on the pitch.

It's not like their owners are Mike Ashley, as they have still spent a shed load.

If Radcliffe comes in and starts with the infrastructure then that'll help but if he comes in and starts with big money signings it may be more of the same.

Anyone who buys United immediately has to drop a billion plus on the stadium, which is barely fit for purpose any more.

538 now give United an 8 % chance of getting relegated. We all know it won't happen, but I'm allowing myself to imagine it happening.

Casemiro going there is a strange move if the reports are true, although he's won everything so probably fancies something different.

They'll probably ruin him too.

538 is pretty good later in the season, but at the start it always completely underestimates the difference in strength between the Top-4-chasing clubs in the PL and the rest. Before the season started it was giving an over 70% chance of a non-Big-6 team reaching the Top 4, a 4% chance of United going down, and a 2% chance for Arsenal - all of which is just insane. It reckons the gap in quality between us and Chelsea is about the same as the gap in quality between Arsenal and Aston Villa! For whatever reason it just doesn't recognise the quality gap, despite the eventual 11 point difference between 5th and 6th last time.

If they didn’t have the brand name of Manchester United and were just any other club then they wouldn’t be an attractive purchase due to how much needs to be spent on behind the scenes improvements.

But that name brings with it huge amounts of commercial power. The Glaziers are sitting pretty as the club generates such a high return for them in the way of dividends with very little risk or involvement on thier side.

Why should they care about negative sentiment among the fans. I’d be quite happy to take in $20m/yr in return for the occasional protest the other side of the world and a few comments on a social media platform that I don’t engage with

Doubt he'd let the Glazers carry on syphoning off money and not servicing any debt. For that reason I don't think they'd let him have a share.

Yeah, at the start of the season, they rely a lot less on performance data and market value on Transfermarkt plays a big role in their model. It's supposed to account for transfers, but seemingly doesn't work that well.

Are the Casemiro links to them legitimate? He's not the type of player you want United getting.

Looks like it yeah - they can probably double his salary. He is a good player for sure and would improve them but they need a hell of a lot more to turn that club around. They really need a striker for a start and probably a completely new defence.

So much so he tried to buy Chelsea.
A friend of mine said he (Ratcliffe) was asked about this during an interview (think it was the BBC). As in "why do you want to buy Chelsea when you are a Man Utd fan?". His response was "but, Utd are not for sale". He thought (the friend of mine) it sounded like an unsubtle public attempt to smoke out the possibility of buying Utd, and he was never interested in doing anything other than going through the motions re: Chelsea. Who knows? Sounds plausible though.

Don't buy it tbh mate. He like many other rich folk can see the potential future value in owning a PL football club. Why else was there a queue of non Chelsea supporting business folk trying to buy them?

Really? He's exactly the sort of player I'd hope they buy. Another player who's won absolutely everything, who's only motivation for joining them is the obscene amount of money which is too hard to turn down. They're unlikely to achieve anything in the next few years regardless of getting in Casemiro, at which point he'll be 33 and probably need replacing.

He also doesn't really suit a Ten Hag team as he's never really played in a team that wants to press high up the pitch.

Just a theory. I guess Utd are still the prime PL club to takeover (in terms of potential revenue). Chelsea not so much. Think their stadium is even more constrained re: development than our old one. @davidmatzdorf may have some insight on this.

The glaziers will have pulled off quite the deal if they do sell. Take a billion quid out of the club and sell it for six billion. But the perceived wisdom is that football clubs will go up in value, so why sell now? Either way they’ve pulled off an amazing deal for themselves when they do sell. Got to be admired in some way when it’s not your club!

Casemiro is an absolutely outsanding CDM, would be a great signing for them short term.

Even with him they'd still be well off the pace, though, and he's already 30 years old. Can't think of many top DMs that have lasted at the top level well into their 30s except Busquets who has a much less all-action style anyway (and has also dropped off in recent years).

Can see him being a very expensive burden in a few years time and the latest in a long line of overpaid players they cant shift.
