Funny thing is with all the haranguing him last night every time he got the ball he never lost it once and every pass was successful. The only foot you might say he put wrong was the own goal, maybe quicker reactions may have deflected it off but even then he couldn't just let it go past him.

I'd have so much more sympathy if he had left man utd.

The grief he is getting isn't because of his ability but because despite chances to leave he has chosen to stay at a club where he doesn't play.

If he had gone to West Ham, Moyes would have him as captain and playing a role perfect for him and nobody would be able to really argue Southgates loyalty.

But he isn't playing and when he does it's badly and Southgate is well I'm not sure what he is doing right now but the blind loyalty to some of the older players , especially Maguire is causing far more problems than its solving.

Maguire hasn't played particularly badly for England. At the Euros England conceded two goals (one a FK) and Maguire was in the team of the tournament. That was just 2 years ago. I don't necessarily think it's some suicidal move by Southgate to keep him around, and England aren't blessed with incredible depth at CB anyway. The criticism is generally "why is Maguire still in", not "why is [x] not in".

This bullshit with Maguire is garbage "banter" that has been taken too seriously and legitimised. He has become a meme, but there are so many morons that cannot distinguish between memes and reality that it has created a bandwagon which festered into something ugly. The minute he got mentioned in Ghanaian parliament I knew this had gone too far and it was no longer truly about his ability.

Also: Man Utd aren't playing well right now and that can't be blamed on Maguire anymore.

I can see it from his point of view tbh, footballers aren’t all fans of football, United gave him a fat contract. If he wants the money fair dicks to him.

Nobody (as far as I know) knows the terms of that deal. What about if he'd have gone if Utd had subsidized his wages up to his current deal, but they wouldn't do it? I wouldn't blame him for turning that down.
