Every game is a must win game!
No, it's not. Lose a game in the league, and you have a ton of games to make up for it. Lose a game in a knockout competition and that's it. Over. There are many better times to test out players than making 9 changes against a good EPL team in a knockout cup.

Ange has to realise he's been brought here to win trophies too, not just play pretty football. Before the game he said the other players need minutes.. thats not our problem mate. Minutes should be earned, not given.
Dan (coys) says otherwise.

Yes, it's a shitty result but I'm not talking about this one game, I'm more referencing the hype that's been building over the past few games. We've all been swept up by the hype and this may well be the cold shower of reality we needed.
We've got a long way to go on this journey yet.

Not for me, I still have optimism for the league campaign. The reason this is frustrating is because of the changes, not because of an inferior or inconsistent level of play from our strongest XI. The "cold shower" will probably come, but in the league, against a good team.

This is just an infuriating missed opportunity.

And with this, we hit a hard bump.

Feel good factor has dissipated very quickly.

Today just highlighted how weak we are without biss and madders.

Vdv was good though

I missed the last 10-mins plus pens - which is just as well, I hate watching pens.

But - this is what it was. We are not as good as we thought, and we are not as bad as some now think.

We had to rotate in this game - games, 3, 4, and 5 all away in space of 7 days. So, I don't blame Ange for rotating.

Having said that I think Ange made two mistakes - and hopefully has learned from them. First, the CM3 of Lo Celso, Hojbjerg and Skipp was never going to be skillful enough to play Ange's tactics against a PL squad. Not enough technical skill - particularly with Skipp and Hojbjerg. In retrospect - should have saved Skippy for the weekend, and played Sarr from the start today. The second error was not getting the subs in earlier - with no extra-time to worry about, and the starters struggling to string together a few passes, subs should have been on shortly after halftime - to give them time to impact the game.

The players also deserve a bit of criticism - this was a golden opportunity to show they deserve more minutes. But, nobody put in that kind of effort - and ultimately, that was disappointing - lack of effort. Lo Celso probably at the top of that list - because the game was crying out from him to come a little deeper and take control of the CM - he was too passive.

It's a disappointing end to the League Cup - but it's not a disaster. Hopefully it provides some clarity to Ange and others about what we still need in the squad, if we want to accomplish a goal of CL qualification.

I do think its a little harsh to fully judge the players on their performance today - as a few could still play a part in a lightly-rotated team - but it was too much with 9 changes.

The two 1st teamers that started the game both ended the game injured.
I saw VDV limping toward the end, but who else was injured? My assumption about VDV was just feeling the effects of that tackle he got the yellow card for. Either that, or was making it very clear he was in no mood to take a penalty!!

Yeah, cause putting that team out in a league game would be totally agreeable.

Basically, anything other than winning upsets a lot of people.

Feel Ange has been a bit of a victim of circumstance here.
We were well light on pre season not only missing games but players sharing the little game time we did get.

Those players out there tonight did well in the little pre season they had but Ange decided on others to start the premiership games

So now a few weeks into the season these players with little/no match fitness were bought in but the bravery Ange called for from them and saw in pre season was replaced by a sluggish fearful team performance with second guessing of passes and slow movement of/off the ball.

Some may have expected that performance given some of the players histories with us but Ange is giving them the benefit of a clean slate.

I'm sure (hope) after tonight he won't make the same mistake again.

No he has not. He's been clearly told top 4 is the priority.

He needs to learn about the squad. I hope he's learnt more about it tonight.

Lo celso isn't it, neither is peh, or skipp.

You can play one with biss and maddersz but they are lacking in terms of wanting the ball, and being able to receive it under pressure.

my main issue, isnt with the result really. More the state of our squad outside the 1st 11-13 players. Rest a few players and the drop off in quality is alarming.
Yep, and it's not just the quality, it seems to be the desire too.
Like, some of them just aren't capable of playing how the manager wants and have no desire to even try.
We were never fixing the squad in one window but it's concerning how many of these players we're going to be stuck with for the next few months.

I'm still livid. Really hate the feeling after feeling so positive from the opening weeks of the season.

Really hate it.. 💔
