Was pleased for him last night, i was really suprised he got selected, but it really is testament to how well he has been playing lately and long may that continue.

Also agree with the poster who thought he was better than Gerrard while they were both on, definately put himself about more!

The only spurs player to start in the new england team after being dropped from the squad. Shows exactly what kind of guy we have on our team, one woh is prepared to knuckle down and work hard.

He is reaping the rewards. We all knew what a player he could turn out to be, and at last we are starting to see some consistancy. I've always been a fan of Jenas, never slated him, and always thought he was a great buy.

Lets hope he can continue his club form.

I absolutely love the fact we finally have a national manager who will pick players on form, its what the whole country (fans) have been shouting for, yet silly commentaters and media still seem to think we should pick the 'big' named players instead.. thats why the report and don't manage though.

Really pleased to see this thread, I sat in the car this morning ranting about the coverage right across the media and wondering what JJ has to do to get some respect.

Apparently the goal scorers were jermain jenas & SHAUN WRIGHT PHILLIPS!
Still I suppose it avoids the inevitable "Linked with Man Utd" stories!

The good thing is that JJ now knows he has got to keep up his current form and the England side of his career will take care of itself as Fab will pick the form players. I was happy when Fab got the job because he really doesn't give a crap about the 'name' players, although the commentators still do. so glad Owen didnt even get a kick, didnt deserve to be in the squad

didnt really think it needed a new thread - so just post in here.

Was at the N.I. vs Bulgaria game last night. Game was fucking crap, and pitch was bobbling everywhere so the players couldn't play that smoothly to be fair.

Anyway Berba certainly didnt tire himself out was like a relaxed training session for him. Still had fantastic touches and his awareness of players around him was excellent. Dont think he lost the ball once and plucked some crackers out of the air. He was captain also. Bulgaria looked a decent side, then anyone would against us last night coz we were shit.

Petrov was a flying machine again, really really good player, still my biggest regret not getting him in the summer.

Him and berba certainly seemed to be close, they were laughing and joking for ages before the match and at half time. Petrov must have done something to berbas ear or shirt (or some shit) and was taking the piss out of him about it. Certainly seemed to be more friendly with themselves than anyone else.

Either way the match was pointless, it was fucking freezing and the players looked as if they just didnt want to be there (definately true of berba).

Great for JJ to get a game. Wasn't the type of performance he has been putting in recently (unless you count the Sunderland game), but he was decent enough. No better or worse than anyone else really.

Capello will love him though, he works very hard and he will play the role he is asked to play. I kept hearing David Platt saying that Capello would love to see more of Jenas attacking and joining up with the striker, but in reality that probably isn't what he wanted at all and JJ was keeping with the shape and the structure of the team very well.

Anyone who expects England to play dynamic exciting football may as well go and play PES cos it is about the only place England will be dynamic. We will win though and JJ will have an important role to play.

Thought he was the best CM before he got taken off.

His was pressing at a high tempo and got in a good few tackles and interceptions. Apart from the goal had 2 other promising attacking moments. One where Rooney took over and fluffed it and one where he passed it too late to J Cole. Oh and of course the left footed volley that brought a great save.

When he went off and Bentley got moved to RCM we looked a lot poorer defensively. Nearly all of the Swiss' chances and indeed there goal came from that area of the pitch after JJ had gone and I think Capello would of picked up on that.

I assume you mean he was England's best CM, because clearly Gelson Fernandes and Inler were the best CM's on the pitch in the first half. Fernandes was everywhere and Inler was mopping up everything and playing some extremely good balls from deep. You wouldn't have realised we had the extra man in the centre.

Still I would say JJ was probably the most effective of the 3 of our central midfielders in the first half, although it was by no means outstanding. He can do better.

I though last nite was one of Lampards better games :)

Jenas looked confident and wanted the ball, he showed a self belief that he belonged in the company of Gerard etc.. its a big step forward for him and it'll benefit THFC.

This is not a go at Capello in general as I've always said he's the best in the business but I can't agree with this.

Just a few examples...

Aaron Lennon should have walked into that squad based on current form. Much as hate to agree with Alan 'Awwigght' Curbishly, Rob Green should easily have made it above Kirkland. Micah Richards should have started ahead of Brown

What irritates is the way everyone in the press and media seem to be down talking Jenas both before and after the game. It seemed as though they didnt want him there (or didnt feel he deserved to be there) and grudge any success he may have had when on the field.

Talksport were saying how quiet he was and that his passing was sloppy, then when he scored they praised joe cole and simply said Jenas scored although it would have been hard for him to miss.

The when I got back home and watched the BBC I barely heard a mention of Jenas, they were too business praising Rooney, Cole and Bentley.

Then I watch the highlight/run down of the game on SSN and they seem to show a clip of anything remotely of interest in the game and comment on it yet they failed to include Jenas's left foot shot which the keeper did well to turn round the post for a corner (just before he went off)

But for the tips of the keepers fingers JJ would have had two goals last night, yet even now SSN seems to be discussing the performances of everyone aside him. They are talking about David James and even Upson yet they have not bothered toeven mention JJ who got his first England goal and could easily have had a second.

Micah Richards is playing at CB. I agree with Capello that a player shouldn't be playing oop.

Shame that there are only 3 English RB's who are 1st choice for their EPL clubs.

Can you tell me who they are?

He seemed to have a decent game, battled hard, got forward well, made few mistakes and scored a goal, for me he deserves another start!

We certainly should have had Richards in place of Brown as Richards has the ability to go past the midfielder and open up space for them whereas Wes hasn't.

I would also like to add Crouch for Rooney to that list. Alongside Joe Cole, Peter Crouch has been England's most consistent performer over the last couple of years, Rooney certainly has not.
Again, last night, Rooney's major contribution was to miss a couple of sitters, give possession away, and generally balls things up in the final third. But his work ethic and occasional Hollywood style play seemed to find favour with the pundits.

Crouch, on the other hand, won just about every high/long ball, he held the ball up, linked the play and he looked more likely to score or set someone else up.

When Rooney puts an England shirt on it's style over substance and hopefully the next time Capello plays one man up front he'll realise this and play Crouch instead.

I would of also had Woodgate instead of Upson if it was on who is the better player but i'm also glad he didn't play and pick up an injury.
How is Brown better than Richards?
