I think Dier didn't have a great game against SU, but to me it was the one game since the restart where our lack of a dedicated DM really left the CBs exposed. Lo Celso had a poor game defensively and often didn't track the runners or cover the space in the box and this meant Dier was hung out to dry on a few occasions. Being forced to chase the game obviously didn't help either.

Even from these screen shots IDK what you'd expect him to do.

I think the only thing he could have done better was to mirror the run a bit more.
If he was more central between Lloris and Sissoko (but not physically between them) it would have cut out more of the cut back.

Too close to the goals. Lloris gets it. Too far back it's Sissokos and Dire gets the rest.
But Davies needed to step across and get closer to the man in the middle. Just stood there.

Make an attempt to cut out the cross instead of just standing there watching the ball go past you. Also the goal scorer was unmarked in the box stood in between dier and davies.

It looks like he's trying to at least somewhat cover the cutback there. Dier is certainly the least culpable there.

The people picking holes in the defending I would say " you do realise that every single goal scored can have holes picked in the defending ."

It was not 2v4/5 in the box.

There were several players to blame however Dier and Davies could have still salvaged the situation. Dier needed to stay in line with the ball and Davies needed to stay tight to the scorer. It was awful from both of them

I personally think it’s been bad business signing him up to a new contract. My only hope now would be that he has a half decent season 20/21, the board realise he doesn’t improve our team and eventually sell him. I think that strikers look at Dier and feel confident that they have the beating of him. He’s very prone to a mistake whether that be a misplaced pass or bad touch. This has me feeling also that we don’t have a plan to bring in a CB this summer

This is a pretty important point. Dier has his uses but I’m sure attackers, especially the other top 6 ones, feel they can always get something against him. I personally would love to see a new CB come in. I’ve always thought Toby was the signing that made everything click for Poch as we went from one of the worst defences in the league in 14/15 to one of the best in 15/16 and we all know the rest.

As someone who really wanted Dier out whilst he was moving around like a oil tanker in midfield, he has shown more quality at the back. I like the domination in the air and determination to intercept. He has a bit of pace for a centre back and likes to physically dominate. A partnership with Toby would be my ideal but I think he could operate as the spare man in a back 3 as well.

Let's see how he gets on. He isn't going anywhere whilst Mourinho is around and will be first choice so with more game time and experience playing at the back he could save us a lot of money.

He shouldn't be first choice guaranteed. Dier is better at centre back than in midfield, but Toby and Sanchez have done well in his absence. I would be very disappointed if Jose drops out one of them to bring Dier back in today.

With 3 wins on the bounce and a week’s rest, JM has to start with an unchanged team today. Dropping one of the CBs for Dier would be scandalous given the way the defence has been since Dier’s suspension.

It was wanyama signing and moving back dembele into the midfield - clicked everything for spurs ... Even toby in his first match when conceded two goals and a penalty against stoke(opposition i am not sure), he told media that we need better screening in front of the defense. Then we signed wanyama and everything fall into place ..
