5th gets you CL now does it?

Its the hope that kills you my friend.
It does from this season on sir. I’m very hopeful for this season. The new GK is meant to be a gooden (haven’t seen much at all myself), Udogie who I have seen a lot of is a superb talent and made for the PL IMO, Maddison is a baller.. add a CB and that would pretty much every weak position from last season replaced with a much stronger option while also playing under a manager and system that will get the best out of them far more. I think we’re gonna surprise a lot of people this season if we get a CB across the line, it’ll be a big swing either way, we get one I think we get CL and if we don’t I think you may be closer to the truth in that we’ll have a fight to make top 6

All well and good saying "it has", but there is absolutely no noise in the media about 5th automatically getting CL.

@arunspurs posted this a couple of weeks back:

Suggesting there are still a few things which need to line up before we can consider 5th a CL spot.

So its an extra place for the league with the best performance in the season just gone. It will depend on how English teams fare in the competitions this year.

Why would there be noise in the media? Its literally of no relevance at the moment.
My point is if the additional place was guaranteed there would be a lot more in the media about "top 5" as opposed to "top 4" qualifying for Champions League. From everything I read the 5th CL spot in the Premier League next season is not guaranteed.

You are correct. I have been reading about it on another forum and didn't check to see that they had their initial information correct.

It’s not guaranteed but it’s incredibly likely due to England’s very good results in European competitions of late. 2 extra places will be awarded to the countries with the best coefficient scores. England not being one of those countries is incredibly unlikely

Just did a wiki check
two extra places one each for the two countries with the highest coefficient

so 5th highly likely as England are current top of the coefficient table.

Edit: actually it’s more uncertain, two countries with best coefficient from the previous season, not the five year average

The final two places will go to the associations with the best collective performance by their clubs in the previous season (total number of points obtained divided by the number of participating clubs). Those two associations will earn one place for the club best ranked in the domestic league behind the UEFA Champions League positions

Even if it was guaranteed, I wouldn't trust most journalists to find their backside with both hands, but I take the point.

If it was coefficient I'd agree "highly likely", but that's not what that press release says (unless they changed it subsequently)

There is absolutely no reason it shouldn’t be both based on cost.

we have neglected cb for about 5 years bar Romano.

we need both and this is the time to actually back the manager.

anything else and we are short changing him.

we aren’t looking at £80m cbs here.

£70m -£80m would probably get both.

acting small time again sadly.
Levy's biggest confidence trick is convincing a large amount of our supporters that Spurs are skint. Like you say, we aren't talking 2 x 80 million centre backs.

Just updated the post. It’s coefficient for just the previous season - I.e what happens in this coming season

so I guess it won’t be known until as late as April.

5th gets you CL but only if the teams in the league do well enough in terms of coefficient in the same season. So a team could finish fifth and then not get it due to under performance of other clubs in Europe in the same league.

Now if that’s going to happen to any club, who do you think it will be? 🤔😬☹️

Just the year you want Arsenal and Newcastle in the champs league...

Nice thanks for sharing.

If it’s likely one of VDV/Tapsoba and +1 then do we want the +1 to be Tosin or Lenglet? Tobin more pace but Lenglet knows the club and very good on the ball.

Im leaning towards Tosin over Lenglet for more of a fresh start and for his pace.

Bringing back to topic I’d be fine with Tapsoba or VDV, personally leaning towards VDV as he can also cover LB and I’ve seen a little more of him but from what some respected posters have said on here and other articles and from the bits I have seen of him, Tapsoba looks like a proper player as well.
Personally I didn’t like what I seen from Lenglet. I didn’t think he was horrendous I just thought he was very average and a similar level to Dier/Sanchez.

However I appreciate that the way we played probably played to his weaknesses as opposed to his strengths. So I accept that if we did sign him he might look much better in this team, but I’d preferably avoid him

And when ticket prices are being increased 'in line with other London clubs'...well, our biggest rivals have just dropped £105 mill on a CDM, so maybe our transfer business can be brought in line with that (dream-land, I know!)

Here's the thing I said :

Top 5 doesn’t get CL automatically.

5th placed team gets CL for 24/25 IF

1) Spot 1 : PL Title winner of 23/24 also wins CL 23/24

(OR)

2) Spot 2 : English teams in CL23/24 do collectively well and comes in top2 best nation in CL23/24 edition.
Calculation=no of points earned by each team/no of nation teams in CL23/24
If for example, AZ is the only team participating for Dutch league, whatever points they earn from groups to knockouts divided by 1...and this calc is done for all nations and top 2 nation is awarded with extra point

So, potentially PL could have from 4 to 7 CL spots after next season... (another spot is for EL winners)

or

3) Spot 3 : EL/CL winners of 23/24
