Brock Lesnar's UFC debut is almost upon us.

It's certainly going to be interesting. Yahoo Sports ran an article a few days ago that summed up why. The whole article can be read at URL below...

http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news?slug=dm-lesnar012108&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

An interesting extract, which is very apt, is..

...But what makes this match different from a Kimbo Slice-type of freak show is that those on the inside are even more intrigued than those on the outside...

Anyway some videos...

He did dominate the guy he fought in his first (and only) fight, but having such a grappling style, i do wonder about his jaw...

I can't wait for this, it's going to be fucking awesome!!

My only complaint is how much Frank Mir is being talked up to make it look bigger than it is. Even that yahoo article does the same thing. It says how any other new fighter would be fighting weaker competition for a while before taking on someone as good as Mir. But the fact is, since coming back from his accident Mir has looked very very average. He's still trading on his rep as the champion from before the accident (when he looked incredible).

Lesnar is coming with a big reputation from another fighting discipline, and therefore fighting an average UFC fighter is totally normal. But the media are making out it's exceptional to big up Lesnar.

Is Mir much of a puncher then? A mate of mine is a massive Lesnar fan from his time at WWF and he's convinced he could take a ICBM in the face and grin it off, so my suggestion that a decent puncher, like Pedro Rizzo, would knock the shit out of him doesn't go down well

I've never seen Lesnar punched and in that last fight he relied solely on his reach and strength - the guy barely got a touch on him really. Against a grappler then yeah, he has a more than average chance, but until i see him go toe-to-toe with someone i'm still a bit sceptical i'm afraid

Nah, Mir's more of a wrestler than a stand up fighter normally. Excellent BJJ skills, but also very good on his feet. I'd expect him to try and stand up against Lesnar, purely because Lesnar is supposed to be a pretty decent wrestler, but I'd still fancy Mir's chances if it does go to the mat.

A lot of it will depend on Mir's fitness. He struggles a bit with his weight. If he's fit and lean like he was in his last fight (and he was before his bike crash) then I think he'll beat Lesnar whatever happens. If he's fat and bloated like he was against Cruz or Brandon Vera, then Lesnar will have a good chance.

(Having said that, I've never seen Lesnar fight in my life, and knew nothing about him until recently, so fuck knows! )

-v- Min Soo Kim

The guy is stacked, but he's agile - got a lot going for him. He's pretty relentless and barely breaks a sweat in that fight, but whether his got the stamina to keep it up only time will tell, i guess.

Oh my God, that was terrible. Min Soo Kim was appalling.

Against a decent fighter (like Mir) there's no way that Lesnar would've got such a sloppy take down, and no way in hell he'd have passed his guard so ridiculously easily. I also can't understand why he tapped out like that, if the guy can't take a couple of ground and pound head shots, he shouldn't be fighting MMA.

Also it's worth noting that Mir is a very big guy. Maybe not as big as Lesnar, but probably not too far off. And I reckon he has a better reach.

I'm going for Mir to dominate, then win by submission. Something simple like an armbar or kimura.

Mir was out for a fair while after his crash and UFC has developed a lot since. Many more talented fighters now than there were originally. Reckon Randy would "impose his will" on Brock easy if he were still fighting ;-)

ps. For those that have a PS3 have a butchers on you-tube for the forthcoming UFC game. Some fight night 3 quality footage of Chuck and Rampage going at it. Hope the game is decent.

pps. How fkin expensive are UFC tickets?!?!? Tried to go to the last one at the O2 centre and was shocked...... more pricey that a seat at the Lane lol

Are you aware of how exceptional Brocks history in (professional) wrestling is?

Only what I've read, that fight is the first I've ever seen of him (I don't follow wrestling or WWF in the slightest)

And no matter how good Lesnar is in professional wrestling, that doesn't make that performance by Min Soo Kim any better at all. No half decent wrestler would've been passed as easily as that, no matter how technically good it was. And the takedown was shit as well, any MMA fighter with semi respectable take down defense would've laughed at it.

I'm not saying Brock Lesnar isn't great (I don't know at all) I'm just saying that Min Soo Kim was shit.

That's completely irrelevant really but his history in amateur wrestling is - in four years at college his record read 106-5, 2 x NJCAA All American champ, 2 x NCAA All American champ, 2 x Big Ten champ and 2000 Heavyweight NCAA champ. He was formidable as an amateur wreslter, hence the interest in an Kurt Angle -v- Lesnar shoot match.

If we were talking, say 10 - 12 years ago, when UFC was much more defined in the disciplines people would fight in, now all of these have become diluted into styles and techniques (Millitech maybe being one of the more famous pioneers of styles engineered specifically to be used in this type of open combat) that combine parts of lots of different martial arts. Yeah, it means they broaden their offensive and defensive arsenal massively, but there's no passion or romance in the sport anymore - back then the fighters discipline or specialty was one of the first things you looked at and would debate when a kick-boxer was drawn against a wrestler, or a boxer against a pancrase fighter.

I dunno, i suppose it's just taste, i preferred it that way and i think Brock, with his wrestling background and ability would've been both a great competitor and a massive draw...

But the old format never worked because a decent wrestler (or more notably a BJJ fighter) would easily beat every boxer, kick boxer, kung fu, karate etc...

Which is why I still think Mir will win, because he's that much more rounded.

Can't wait for this.

I want Mir to snap Lesnar's arm in half like he did to Sylvia but I have predicted Brock to win in the first round by TKO.

Yeah, I don't want Mir to knock him out because all the WWF fans will just say that it was always going to happen because they don't fight like that.

I want Mir to take him down and out wrestle him, getting a submission. Show to everyone that the best MMA fighter can beat the best WWF actor anyway you like to play it

Fuck knows, but I won't be waking up for it that's for sure.

Up early tomorrow, jump on a download, then watch the whole event as a Sunday night special.

Looks like MMA TV is showing on TVU - it's a good stream, just hope the sound synchs up this time as sometimes it goes way out on that channel... there's other options though, if you need em
