Napoli confirm approach to Spurs over manager Andre Villas-Boas
Thursday 23 May 2013 10:06 am
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed the club have made an approach to Tottenham for their manager Andre Villas-Boas.
The Italian giants, who finished second in Serie A last season, are on the lookout for a replacement for Walter Mazzarri after he opted to walk away last week.
And speaking to Portuguese paper DN, De Laurentiis confirmed he had made Spurs boss Villas-Boas a top target.
‘Yes,’ he replied when asked if an approach had been made.
‘There is a very tempting argument to hire a young coach here.’
It is not clear whether Spurs have entertained the offer from Napoli, but it is thought that they are keen to hang on to the 35-year-old despite his failure to land Champions League football last season.
Napoli are also believed to be considering ex-Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo as an alternative, while Rafa Benitez has previously been linked with the role.
Whoever takes over will have the imminent task of fending off Manchester City who are set to step up their interest in striker Edinson Cavani in the next few weeks.
