Only a one year extension on his previous deal but it means he has two years left instead of just one when this loan is over. To me that suggests we're probably looking to sell next summer unless he absolutely tears it up in Spain.

Best of luck to him and I hope he succeeds. I will definitely keep an eye out for Villarreal's results now.

Good news for him. A loan, 2 years too late, but a great opportunity to play consistently if he gets in their team, hopefully at centre back.

Sadly the bold is becoming more and more Pochettino's legacy. His attitude towards loans has always baffled me and now it seems more and more evident that the strategy (or lack of) was badly misguided.

Fully paid up member of the Juan Foyth fan club, so very happy to see the details of the extension and loan. Really hope he smashes it & returns to show the doubters how good he can be when given a proper run of games.

Extension appears to be purely to protect his value:

The Argentine defender has joined Villarreal on loan from Tottenham Hotspur
Villarreal CF and Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement for the loan of Juan Foyth, who will play for the Yellows during the 2020/21 season. The loan agreement has a purchase option at the end of the season. The Argentine footballer will join up with his team-mates after his time with the Argentine national squad, who have named him in the provisional squad for their upcoming matches next week. Details of his presentation as a Villarreal CF player will be announced soon.

Foyth, youth and security for the Yellows’ defence

Juan Marcos Foyth (La Plata, 12/01/1998) stands out for his ability to anticipate and recover the ball. He is also impressive with the ball at his feet, and dominates in the air. Thanks to his versatility, he can play both at centre-back and right-back.

The new Yellows defender signed for Tottenham Hotspur aged just 19 from Estudiantes de la Plata, the club where he came through the ranks and stepped up to the elite. Foyth is an Argentina international, having played ten times for them

Dominates in the air? o_O

Let’s hope it works out for him, because if it doesn’t we are going to be trying to flog him next year on higher wages.

A loan 2 years ago would have done him good. Skipp for example just won September player of the month at Norwich. When he comes back next season the progress will make him much better.

When you’ve been supporting Tottenham for over 50 years, you just begin to start appreciating skilful, graceful players rather than the utilitarian and athletic alternatives that have clogged our squads for decades. Foyth’s skills excite me and I hope he comes back as a very good player.

I don’t think it’s an either or and while this may not have been your your intent, it’s not the nicest implication to make that posters who don’t rate Foyth therefore don’t appreciate skilful graceful footballers.

For instance, King and Vertonghen were both hugely skilful, in my opinion more so, but for arguments let’s say on a level. However, they were both built like trucks by the time they’d reached Foyth’s age and thus far better able to use that skill under physical pressure from opponents. Ginola, Waddle, Hoddle, Dembele, Berbatov, Bale, all wonderfully gifted footballers who were far better able to make use of their ability because of their physical gifts. Yes, there’sa litany of examples of smaller/ less physically imposing players who reached the top on pure talent, including arguably the best player of all time, but not at centre back and generally the absolutely exceptionally talented. Modric, Zola, Juninho, Silva, all exceptional in this league despite being slight and unimposing, but none were centre backs and all were pretty much as good as you can be in terms of pure talent and brains.

I just don’t think there’s an example of a centre back who reached the top in this league in recent times who displays the same combination of pluses and minuses as Foyth.

I wish him luck. Anyone expecting him to come back defending like Ledley, whilst pinging balls out of defence like he could play at number 10 is going to be a bit aggrieved though.

Question is if he will want to come back next year if he does well in Spain.

Having said that, loaning him out was a sensible decision IMO.

This could be Toby's last season with us, so it would be amazing if Juan came back after having a blinder of a season in Spain
