Sanchez is a funny one... promised a lot more in his first season with us. But I guess we were in full Poch flow.

So much of the rest of the team are moneyball purchases. Opportunities - players priced to clear - and I think without Poch's system at optimal operational capacity, we're beginning to see why they were opportunities. It's only the last 2 windows we've shown that we might be more willing to bring in more technical players (lo Celso, Bergwijn, NDombele) - and I believe that's what's needed. More players who can control a football. Maybe Hitchen has woken up? Who knows.

I like Sess - just dunno why we spent £25m on him when no one knows what his best position is. Would have been better off with Grimaldo or Telles - round pegs for round holes. There's been talk of having to teach Sess the defensive side of the game is all too familiar - when I think back to Sissoko's struggles, or Lamela's for that matter. They had to learn how to play football on the job, it seems. Such a bizzare recruitment strategy over the years.

It's no wonder people are on the clearout & overhaul bandwagon.

I've defender Sanchez so much to my mates but there's one thing I just argue with which is that there's doesn't seem to have been an improvement since the day he joined. He's still good at the things he was back then and he's still terrible at the things he also was back then.

I think it's going to be extremely hard going in this transfer window. Only clubs with oil money will be spending big and players won't want to move if wages have dropped. Levy will hang onto the purse strings even tighter than usual so all in all, I expect a fair bit of disappointment. The only ray of hope is that some clubs might be forced to sell at knock down prices.

He stagnated because the rest of defence is bad.

I fucking hate that Covid has left them with a ready made fucking excuse for the position we are in.

I don't think the other defenders can be blamed that he clears the ball in a way that makes it seem like he has a octagon shaped skull.

Not at all sure any of last nights Defenders, excepting possibly Dier, should be with us next season. I suppose however we have to keep one or two to make up the squad numbers. Both fullbacks last night struggled and failed to get in one dangerous cross or pass. Sanchez is a flop IMO. He is a big man who cannot make his build or height count. The few times he connects with the ball in the air he usually fails to clear the ball properly. I have never understood why we paid so much for him. Dier needs to play alongside an experienced dominating CD who will cover for his occasional rashness.

All I know is an experienced defensive midfielder with real ability would make us quite a few per cent better than we are now and for the top sides two defensive midfielders IE play 4-2-4 that works for me . we have plenty of midfielders but not one you could call to be quality in that roll . Dear old Sissoko and winks are not defensive at all really .we need at least one if not two to play this role and that is why I am happy to hear of the Hoijberg connection and him plus one other would be good for us .

To be honest, I can't blame Mourinho for the mess that is the first team but Im looking at it and Im struggling to realise how we got here

The the squad judged by the players best positions

ST
Kane

LW
Son
Bergwijn
Sessegnon

AM
Alli
Lo Celso
Lamela

RW
Moura

CM
Winks
Sissoko
N'Dombele
Fernandes

DM

RB
Aurier

LB
Davies

CB
Alderweireld
Vertonghen
Sanchez
Tanganga

GK
Lloris
Gazzaniga

?
Dier
Foyth

If you want your AM3 and Striker to flourish, you need a good defence and midfield to play off, Sissoko despite being a recent success has imo no tactical discipline and gets far too attracted to the ball rather than keep the shape and does more damage than good. If you want to play him in CM, you have to have a DM next to him imo

Dembele even without any legs, was masking a lot of problems imo under poch

I think we're fairly likely to go for Willian in this position.

Although imo what we really need to focus on this summer is basically a brand new back 4. Hopefully Mourinho is good at identifying defensive players.

If we play in Europe I'd sell Rose and Walker-Peters with Vertonghen and Vorm released. Sell Foyth if we can get another centre back.
Other than that I wouldn't sell too many. It's a shame we have Gedson for another year as I prefer Skipp and we're well covered in there.
We need to add depth if we have European football so add a centre back, right back, defensive midfielder and centre forward to the rest.

Without Europe we can afford to trim the squad more and maybe free up extra money to spend on better quality (so a smaller but better quality squad with less games to play). In the ideal world we'd do that for the Europe scenario but we're not going to be in position to spend enough without selling more.

The big one is Ndombele. If he isn't going to play then we may as well cash in on him and upgrade our targets with the extra money. A lot comes down to the formation though. I really fancy Jose to revert to 4-3-3 and replace Aurier for a solid right back. If he can trust the back 4 and get a solid defensive midfielder that formation will work for him. In that scenario Ndombele has a better chance to start.

im being realistic. Nothing personal, he’s just not going to be good enough. Of course players can improve and some do but there’s always some fundamentals in there you look for. Breaking down his game what gives you any confidence to say he will be a very good CB let alone a world class one?
Your surety is interesting, when you consider VVD, who many now consider to be the best defender in the world, had only just left the SPL for Southampton when he was Davinson’s age.

Defenders don’t usually peak until their late twenties, he’s a physical specimen and has great attributes to be a real solid centre half. If he can improve his composure and improve with the ball at his feet, he could potentially be a monster defender.

People are raving about Upamecano, and though he is younger, is even less refined than Davinson.

Sometimes I think people just want to moan.

3. Vertonghen
4. Rose
5. Kwp
6. Foyth
7. CCV
8. Aurier
9. Sissoko
10. Dele Ali
11. Lucas Moura

I would keep :

1. Lloris
2. Tanganga
3. Toby
4. Dier
5. Sanchez
6. Ben Davies
7. Sess
8. Skipp
9. Winks
10. Lo Celso
11. Ndombele ( Depending on what Mourinho wants and whom he can bring instead of Ndombele)
12. Lamela
13. Son
14. Kane
15. Gedson ( Do we need to keep him ? )

Loan:
1. Parott
