Think this quite neatly sums up the fan feelings on the matter:

I partly agree but what's the point in being emotionally invested in a team and having an identity, and having rivalries if all the components of said teams are easily interchangeable?
Yep. It's a paradox. And I agree. I think they are interchangeable and the romance or emotional attachment is based on a suspension of disbelief, as with theatre but more extreme. We feel they are are our players and our managers and ours only. Our tribe, our heroes. Even if we rationally know they can go at any moment. And turn up again in the other tribe's colours. Sorry. Not explaining myself at all well. I will try to think it through better.

When Hoddle left Monaco and didn't come home it was disappointing. But we obviously didn't offer him the job he wanted - Venables was our manger at that point, with Gazza & Lineker in the team.

Swindon were obviously a stepping stone for him, and to be honest Chelsea seemed the same.

They had almost yoyo-ed between the old first & second divisions and we seemed much bigger (eg 86/87 we were 3rd in the league, FA cup finalists and League Cup semi finalists: 89/90 3rd in the league: 90/91 FA cup winners & League Cup quarters).

As for Poch, he needs a job asap if he's to continue in management. I think he'd struggle to turn down a top flight team in any of the big leagues.

Chelsea might not be our ideal, or his, but (assuming he's offered it) I think he has to take it.

Really hope he doesn't go there but couldn't blame him if he did. I think we should have brought him back

It was slightly different with Glenn, he had left Spurs for Monaco, where he played under Wenger, a manager he claimed to have had a lot of admiration for. After Monaco, he went to Swindon as player/manager and having done well there was signed by Chelsea in a similar capacity. He didn't play as often, but did put together the platform for what Chelsea are now. Ken Bates was the owner and invested a lot of money in developing the ground and also in the playing staff. Pretty sure Hoddle brought Wise and Lebouf to Chelsea, possibly even Vialli and Gullit if I'm not mistaken. But from then he took the England job, went off the rails a bit with his association with a faith healer and made some comments about disabled people being punished for sins in a former life, that saw him end up at a dead end Southampton, but he got them in good form before coming to us and Sugar, who gave him no funds, which ended up being his last managerial job in the top flight.
I thought Levy got him in after George Graham ?

I admit to getting old but my recollection is that Hoddle left Monaco mid season with a knee injury. He needed to go somewhere for rehab and that somewhere was Chelsea. He didn’t play for them but he did his recovery there. Did he ask to do it with us, did we offer him the chance? No idea.
