"Another trophy less season for them". From Villa Talk? From teams that are used to winning stuff, I get it - it's banter, shit banter, but banter nonetheless. From a Villa fan though? Last major trophy (league cup) in 1996 Villa? Even we've won two of them since 1996.

I'll never understand this modern breed of football fan. The complete lack of self awareness is mind boggling.
I had it with a villa fan on twitter the other week. Exact same comment. I only use twitter for latest news but felt compelled to reply. I noticed he deleted he’s comment shortly after.

Villa, Newcastle and to a lesser extent Brentford are becoming unbearable.

From the Mancs’ perspective, Son has caused them the most problems the last few years, so I kind of get where they’re coming from.
True but then they also got to watch the best individual performance I’ve ever seen in the PL when Kane took them to pieces in Conte’s first season so should know how good he is

I do agree that teams will start to work us out and be interesting to see how we adapt.
Plus I do feel sides are bombing a lot of big chances against us. That will also change
Teams didnt work arsenal out last season really, despite some movements being quite clear.

Noone has figured City out

It does normally take a while for that to happen anyway as most teams focus on themselves and their upcoming opponents.

It may be that a team plays us and learns things for the second game

It's not that hard figuring any team out. In most cases a quick Youtube search could do it. Coming up with a way to counter is a bit more tricky, but again - not that hard.

The trick is in the execution of your counter strategy. Man City aren't good because nobody can figure them out. Man City is good because to counter their style of play, you can't make any mistakes in your own execution.

So, as long as we keep improving and perfecting our style, I wouldn't be too worried about getting found out. Not to say we'll be as good as City, but Ange's track record suggests that we could be good enough to take on most PL teams even if they know what's coming.

Newcastle forum during game on Saturday:

"Maddison is so good"
  • Great player. Just what we needed.
  • We don't play with a 10 though
  • Genuinely one of the best players in the world. So annoyed we didn't get him. Loads on here didn't rate him for whatever reason though.
  • To be fair, while in purely footballing terms he has undeniable talent he does have red flags which mean he would never have worked for us. Firstly, I don't think his personality would have suited this group. I also think to get the best out of him you need to build the attack around him. Howe has never wanted to build around one player.
  • Would've loved him but did you miss the part that he didn't want to come
  • It wasn't that he didn't want to come, we didn't put an offer in for him this summer.
  • Because he wanted to go to Spurs
  • He's consistently one of the best players in the best league in the world. Nah, I know he preferred Tottenham. Just annoyed that he isn't our player after being linked for so long.
  • Accepted but he can't do it at international level.

"Spurs getting the better of Burnley now. Madders running the show for Spurs, best player on the pitch."

"Spurs deserved that, been the better team as the half wore on."

"Maddison is such a diving cheat. Great player but I'm happy we didn't get him".

"170k a week for Maddison. Maybe we can pay that next season".

"Going to go back through this thread and make a note of everyone who said he was shit (Maddison)".

"Son gets his 2nd. Let the media wanking over Spurs commence!"
  • Rightly so tbf. Their front 4 is fluid as fuck.
  • They deserve it so fair play to them.
  • Fuck the cockney bastards
  • They have looked terrific the past few weeks tbf
  • Not really had to face anyone yet, although Brentford away is tough and Bournemouth can be awkward at home too
  • And Man Utd too. Some decent tests in there. Good adjustment to put Son upfront today.
"Son upfront is a game changer for this Tottenham side. Postecoglu is doing his thing.

"Would like to know where this world class Maddison was hiding last season"
  • 10 goals and 9 assists last season tbf
  • In a struggling pathetic Leicester side no less
  • Reasonable point but hardly world class.
"Spurs the real deal or are Burnley dogshit?"
  • Both
  • Bit of both I suspect
"The new Dutch lad at the back looks a player".
  • He really does.
"Spurs doubled their XG today. Bit of a deceptive scoreline"
  • Well when you play a proper finisher upfront that can happen.

I'd counter with that Ange still probably hasn't figured us out yet either. He's managed to implement the base style very quickly and that is to his immense credit, but there will be lots of tweaks and nuances to come through the season. Some might fail, and I expect us to have a sticky patch at some point, but I'm not worried about sides "figuring us out" yet.
That's the wild card factor. We don't have to worry about opponents figuring us out, because even we haven't figure ourselves out! (y)

You’ve got to laugh when a City fan says “Levy doesn’t deserve success” maybe Sheikh Mansour could give him some lessons about what it takes to be a good human being and ethical business man that is worthy of success.
Yeah that made me chuckle. I mean have some fucking self awareness you absolute weapon.

I find all these teams going on about doubling our xg weird. All 3 of sons goals were one on ones, he also missed a couple of other chances. Fine we scored 2 wonder goals, but we messed up a bunch of other chances? I wouldn’t look at that game and think wow we scored way more than we should have.

‘Always thought Son was better than Kane’

Football fans really are absolutely mental
We won't really ever find out. If Kane and Son swapped positions, would Kane replace the 20+goal/assist contributions from our wide, and would Son still get 20+ goals through the middle?

What we do know is, Kane is better playing any kind of football. Son isn't a defensive system player. But most strikers will still score goals in any system

I honestly stop reading posts when xG is mentioned.
See the main thing about xG is OK guys, now that he's stopped reading - we're still on for the party on Friday, yeah? Remember - BBQ facilities are available and A&C's missus is making a salad. You just need to bring your own meat and drinks. And if someone could pick up a garlic loaf, that'd be great.

No dedicated thread on us, but one on Ange.
  • Dropping Dier and changing formation seems to have worked a treat.
  • Just seems odd other teams, including perennial losers like Spurs, can bring in a manager and change style of play quickly but we need the new manager 2 years to settle in, build his team and pay inflated fees for average players before we resemble a decent team.
  • better than Poch
  • Started well but could just be a new manager bounce. Let's wait for his first real test
    • When Manchester United stop being a real test
      • When United are that passive it really isn't a test.
  • Brentford-United-Bournemouth-Burnley: still waiting to see them against a good team but early signs are good compared to last year
  • Doing well, early days but I’m surprised and impressed so far.
  • Think we are seeing the metamorphosis of Sonaldo.
Doesn't quite have that electric pace anymore but stick him central and he's clinical, whilst still being mobile enough to cause defenders an issue. May even suit us better than Kane would have. (does he think they have a chance to sign Son?)
  • What a fun appointment for Spurs, he’s turned them into an entertaining team overnight with virtually no investment and brought some joy in what was otherwise going to be a pretty dim post-Kane era.
    • It’s early days yet, far too soon for any meaningful analysis.
See Solskjaer’s early days and the Rio Ferdinand infamous quote about signing a contract and letting Ole put whatever numbers he wants on it. It was fun for a short while but soon became disastrous for quite some time.
      It’s four games in.
    • I know a few were converting loans to permanent transfers but Spurs have actually spent over £200m this summer, obviously getting a fair chunk of that back with the Kane sale.
  • Early days.
They seem to be creating chances at ease, look capable of scoring loads and actually want to be playing football.
No Europe, only play once a week, bodes well for Ange gelling his team. But you know they will have a Spursy moment.
  • Fair play to him, terrific start. Could just be a honeymoon period though so let's see what happens.
Has Glaston crawled out of his cave yet?
  • Ange just has them playing all out attack minded football, which is pretty fun and a complete 180 from the Jose/Nuno/Conte years. They create lots of chances but also leave huge gaps and concede a lot to the opponent. It reminds me a little bit of some of Wenger's Arsenal teams in the later years, throwing men forward, creating a lot, but also capable of conceding at any moment. They are running hot in terms of the ball going (or not going) in the net right now with an XG-XGA spread of 8.65-6.5 but a G-GA spread of 11-4.
  • He has a long history of improving teams. Every step of his career when he stepped up a level he met the challenge. What he does is create structure and space for his players to grow. There will be bad runs of course but he has already shown he belongs at this level.
  • The only 'good' team Spurs have played is United. And as it stands atm, United are not that good.
But then again, Chelsea have been rubbish, Newcastle poor and Arsenal along with United unconvincing.
  • Should have first gone to the championship to prove himself
    • Maybe league two and worked his way up
  • And to be honest, the first 40 minutes of the United game, United dominated Spurs and should’ve been two up.
But he’s playing exciting forward thinking football that will entertain the fans. But it’s hard to judge how good they actually are yet, hardly played any games. Once the new manager bounce settles, they have a bad day and have to react to it, and teams have had a little time to study how they play, then we will see how good they are.
He’s off to a great start though. As a Spurs fan you couldn’t ask for more. Seems a likeable chap too.
  • In due course most half decent teams will have them worked out pretty quickly, they need to enjoy it whilst it lasts.
  • I’m absolutely baffled at how they had a free run at Maddison for £40m? I know he’s had his injury problems but he’s always looked quality, even in a poor Leicester side. Far less exciting midfielders have gone for much more money than him this summer.
    • Yeah, they've done very well to get him. I really like him. He's quality. I guess the problem is that some of the other clubs may already have players who play in his position. I wouldn't have minded at all if we went for him instead of Mount, though.
    • Just realised he was cheaper than Fred
  • My favourite Australian
  • He's brought in players good under pressure in Maddison and Solomon, identified Richarlison as a weak link which was obvious at Everton, and is playing some good stuff as a result.
  • Not surprised at all that he has made a good start. Was standing out as a candidate for this type of job, not just based on his work at Celtic but a background of actually winning stuff. Winning is winning, whether it's Japan or Scotland or wherever, when it becomes a pattern it suggests something because many managers don't get over the line.
Seems to be able to coach players, maintains a good discipline without getting too matey with them, which is underlined by his straight forward way of communication which is often a strength of Australian leaders. He also had a great eye for a player in Scotland, we'll see how well that transitions to the PL. But you can't really complain about picking up a footballer as talented as Maddison as a start.
  • I'm unsurprised at their progress. Not only are thd players happier, allowing them to operate nearer their true potential for years, the loss of Kane has forced the attacking players to finally take on more responsibility rather than shirking it all on his shoulders. It also helps Bissouma is finally back to his Brighton pomp, yet they added Maddison.
  • When they were playing like this in preseason people said ‘need to see it in the actual season’. Now they’re scoring goals like this in the league. This coach is legit and Spurs will, annoyingly, be very entertaining to watch this season.
  • Great start to the season despite the cup loss. Maddison will probably be the signing of the season, he's fantastic and Southgate needs to find a place for him in the England side.

It’s because the media use it as a stick to beat us with every time we are mentioned. Fans of other clubs are conditioned to put the two together. People are pretty stupid and just believe what they are told on the whole, so it isn’t really a surprise.

It doesn’t help us though, because all it does is contribute to negativity around us. It’s why Ange has done so well to begin to turn the ship around and why it is actually hard for us to win a trophy. The players read it all too. I suspect that’s partly what Ange meant when he was talking about Maddison and how he’s come in without all the baggage of the club around his neck.
