I've missed that bit of the story. The girls appear to have posted the pictures of the sleeping Rooney on social media. This was picked up by a reporter from the Mirror, who then approached them to see if they would sell their story to the paper. As far as I can see, no-one tried to extort money from Rooney, nor is there any mention in the news reports as to what offence his lawyers think may have been committed. (There's clearly an issue regarding the the breach of his privacy, but this would be a civil matter and wouldn't involve the police.)It's not, they tried to extort money from him.
