This Week’s Manager Watch: Ryan Mason

I think getting angry with Ryan Mason for the state of our club is the ultimate act of futility. He’s stumbled into a job he never applied for because we can’t get any aspect of our recruitment right. Yes he was naive today but what do we expect? He was never going to turn the opportunity down, was he? But it’s now souring all that goodwill created when we offered him a coaching role after him being forced to retire. The problem is so much bigger than Mason’s tactical failures against one of the master tacticians of the game, with decades of managerial experience.

We needed someone to come in, take training, do the media duties and keep us ticking over to the end of the season, which is what he has done.

It's always been the players, they have shown themselves up.

It has always been the players because they are the ones that cross the white line but if the players listen to a great coach/manager it makes all the difference and is the biggest difference

Mason is a little boy, completely schooled by another very experienced manager today

We still had a chance of top four however small putting Mason in charge is irresponsible at best.

Without knowing just how toxic it was in the changing room I don't think it's possible to confidently say that.

Maybe but I think JM could have done at least as well against City, Sheffield and Leeds. Mason should not be in charge.

Out coached by one of the greatest football minds,

No shame in that but god what have tangaga and Rodon done wrong?

I don't know where to start. You're comparing Ryan Mason, a guy in his 20's, who's been thrust into the job with no experience to one of the worlds most decorated managers who has 20 years managerial experience and additional coaching experience on top of that. Ryan Mason shouldn’t be in charge, but he is, as a direct result of Mourinho proving to be incompetent.

I'm struggling to not get personal here because your post is just unbelievably moronic.

Lol how is it moronic he shouldn’t be in that position the fact he is, is moronic. Maybe read it again.

unfotunaly he's out of his depth...
Quite possibly and understandable if so, however the last guy was not short of experience and know how and he also struggled.

I think Ryan has a remit to try and play attacking football and get the most out of our better players and has tried to do so. With hindsight today was probably not the day to be completely gung ho but I can understand why he did.

I think it's hugely unlikely he gets the gig permanently and just has the expectation to see out the season with as little fuss as possible. We know we need a new manager, a new plan and probably a few new players so it's a very big job for someone who has been in management for roughly 5 minutes!

Maybe it's just me but if the season ended today I'd be quite relieved.

Problem is with Dele, Kane and Son all want to finish and get on the end of moves. So selfish from them today. Bale the only one who loves a cross but even he is more of a finisher. DESK only worked as Eriksen was unselfish. If tanguy was at 10 he would be looking to pass. So naive from mason.

I suspect he has very few games in charge, wants to pick a settled side and has gone for experience - which suggests that he isn't here for the long term and building for the future.

Maybe I should go back to the start of the match day thread but I thought most were really happy with the side picked but now it's all a disaster and hugely naive?

If Ryan could inject intensity and energy into this team it would already be enough for me. I dont even care about the results.

He’s not helping himself. Picking Dier over Rodon is a sackable offence. Another clueless man in charge.

100%, so much positivity ahead of picking an unchanged side.
