Based on last night's performances, I'm starting to see a nucleus of players that Poch will build around. When fit, the following players, I believe, should consistently start in our current first XI. and first off the bench:

Gazza (GK)
Kane (CF)
Son (AM)
Lo Celso (M)
Lamela (AM)
N'Dombele (M)
Winks (M)
Sanchez (CB)
Dele (M/AM)
Sess (LB)
(10/11)

Clear to see, based on the above, that our most pressing need is at that back... need to prioritize a CB and RB. After that, I'd focus on adding depth to the midfield.

This also goes to show how much work needs to be done bringing in replacements to fill out a comprehensive squad. We potentially need to recruit the following over the next year to 18 months:
1. GK x1
2. FB x2
3. CB x2
4. M x1
5. AM x1
6. CF x1
(8 new recruits)

This is based on the following players leaving or on the outskirts of the squad: (Leaving) Wanyama, Toby, Jan, Aurier, Eriksen, Rose. (Squad) Dier, Davies, Skippy, Parrott, Moura, Foyth, Sissoko.

Starters, plus new recruits, plus current squad players = 23.
Well said! This is what happens when you don’t sign players for 18 months. You’re playing catch up.

Overkill, we need 4 players, 5 max if you want to replace Lloris.

4-5 new players required, just replacements for expected outgoings.
Definites
Aurier out, new RB in.
Alderweireld out, new CB in.
Wanyama out, new DM in.
Eriksen out, new AM/CF in

Then the maybe
Rose out, new LB in.

RB needs to be dynamic going in both directions.
CB, ideally LCB given both Sanchez & Foyth are naturally right sided, plus Jan is not getting younger.
DM needs to be able to able to drop between the CB’s to make a back three for tactical fluidity on the pitch, as Dier has done previously, but ideally more mobile.
AM, or maybe another genuine CF being as Kane, Son and Moura could all play a bit deeper, allowing us flexibility up top to go 3 up, 2 up or 1up top. Look how Kane is used for England as part of a front 3, he can be the focal point given his physical presence, with his partners playing wider, or he can withdraw and allow the pace of Sterling/Rashford to come central as Kane has the ability to pick a pass, the front line is very fluid making it harder to mark them. He could do that for us with Lamela/Lo Celso and Son/Moura

Having that flexibility of a DM able to drop into a back 3, and the No10 able to drop to CM, then the wide forwards able to play as second striker, means a starting 4231, can shift to 433/4321/4312 or 3421/3412 mid game based on what’s happening in-front of them, without the need to go to the bench for that change, in the way Dier would drop into a back three, and/or Eriksen would go from AM to CM for us 18 months ago.

I hope we don't have to put up with Lamela for another few years - he isn't good enough a few decent games inter mingled with absolute drivel the ultimate motd player.

He has got talent but what does he produce over a season? Overall his decision making is poor he doesn't score enough goals and he disappears up blind alley after blind alley. If it is to be a revolution and it needs to be then Lamela who is likeable and tries hard has to be guillotined

Outside of City, tell me what team has better options off the bench than Lucas & Lamela?

Do you think he effects games ? Usually his sub appearances involve him running around like a blue arsed fly and the biggest question is how long it will take him to get booked. He rarely comes on and makes a difference, he did ok on Saturday but the bar hadn't been set very high. Going forward he makes poor decisions but defensively he is a liability

He has had long enough and if he had been fit it might have been different. But he struggles for fitness and just has no consistency sorry but he has to be one of the players we replace

Has this post been saved in your drafts since the summer? He was literally one of our best players last night and one of our best this season.

I don't think he gets in our strongest 11 when everyone is fit but he's a vital member of the squad, pops up with the odd goal but always puts in a shift, we need players like him.

Answer his question. Who bar City have better back up options? Who would you like us to sign that would happily be fifth choice, not cost a bomb and would influence the game as much as Lamela has this season?

Overkill, we need 4 players, 5 max if you want to replace Lloris.
And then we are back to unquestioned starters and no competition for places all around the team. We need more than 4 or 5 players to have that and any team should be in constant flux. Once a player establishes himself as the clear starter then the other should be moved on with a better player coming in to replace and compete (homegrowns being an exception here). It keeps players on their toes and it prevents you from being put in a position of weakness in the xfer market. Or are you just referring to next season ie the Jan and summer 2020 windows?

Nubel on a pre-contract in January solves a 50M+ problem before it becomes one. We have to take advantage of situations like this.

Then we can sell Lloris while he still has value.

I hope we have learned lessons. You have to replace proactively, not reactively.

  • Solid depth across the forward line.
  • Lo Celso/Fernandes battling it out
  • DM competition
  • CB competition
This would be much better depth than we ever had at our "peak". Those benches were terrible most of the time.

Lucas, Lamela, Fernandes, Winks, Dier, Davies, Gazzaniga from the bench when all are healthy.

Then in another year you move on from Lamela, Sissoko & Hugo. Continued refreshing of 3 or four quality players.

I was watching the Juventus game and. I thought the Lokomotiv Moscow goalkeeper Guilherme looked impressive. Good at dealing with Crosses, marshaled his defense well and made some good saves. One to watch?

I mean he’s 33 years old so you could watch him retire I suppose
