I wouldn't start Ade - bring him on for the last half hour to get some game time so he's fresh and can scare the bejesus out of the Villa defence.

I am hoping that Naughton is fit and can come in at LB so we can put Jan back in his best posistion. If Ade is fit i would have him on the bench and give him 30 mins at the end.

Freidel
Walker Gallas Jan Naughton
Sandro Dembele
Lennon Dempsey Bale
Defoe

Have you been drinking this morning?

He's the one outfield player who's been completely rested for this - first name on the team sheet as far as I'm concerned.

I meant in terms of ability rather than tiredness. Gallas has looked shakey all season for me.

So that team would include 10 tired men and a shakey one.

Very worrying.

This is a very sad day TSH.

For the first time in my SC life...I don't agree with you.

I think you should be more concerned about Walker than Gallas judging on recent performances.

tiredness I simply dont buy as an excuse for last night or for Sunday ......... after the win last week they should be walking on air and prepared from a mental and physical perspective to steamroll average opposition at home.
That said, I think we will struggle on Sunday - Villa will come seat deep and try and it us on the break the same as WBA and Norwich and we struggle to breakdown teams like this so no surprise to me that our best performances have been away from home where the games are more open

Then I'm afraid you must leave the site :)

That's a fair point and if Naughton is fit he has to be in with a chance of starting. Based on recent performances I think I'd rather Naughton come in for Walker than for Gallas but in general I think Gallas is one of our weaker links at the moment.

Having said that, Daws didn't exactly put his hand up to replace Gallas last night so we have limited options.

I miss Kaboul :(

I think Gallas has been generally very good so far this season - and I think we need his cool head and leadership on the pitch, especially at the moment whilst the team is still gelling.

And the only other option instead of Gallas would be Dawson. As much as I love him, I can now see precisely why he's not a first-team player.

I dont agree with the negativity around Gallas, I thought he was superb against united, without his leadership at the back, we would have been dead and buried in the second half.
I'd stick with the same line up as the Man U game.

We're unbeaten in 3.5 games with Jan playing at LB, rather than put a fill in who plays with shoes on the wrong feet, probably best to keep him there isn't it? Surely you can see Jan offers us more going forward than playing Naughton at LB?

Gallas was the one holding the back line insanely deep the whole of the second half. In every challenge and tackle he was utterly immense and put everything in to it but the point is he shouldn't have needed to. His leadership should have taken us out and got us up in Uniteds faces. We got lucky there dropping off, last night demonstrates that. It's a team mentality problem but still he's one of the team leaders. I'd still play him for the moment though whilst Vertonghen is need at left back. Dawson is another deep defender so it makes no sense swapping him for Gallas

The worst thing about UEFA is sunday games. :(

Any way, last night gave us a bit of a reality check after last weekend (which might actually be a good thing). We can beat villa but they will go for it with the new manger so we will have to be careful.

Hope Ade is back in the mix.

Haven't seen any of Villa's games this season but it looks like they have been pretty poor. Bale is going to love going past their RB.

It's got a classic Spurs performance of 80% possession, 20 shots and lose 1-0 in the 80th minute written all over it. :shy:

...but that doesn't happen anymore now does it?

Jan is not a natural LB and it was all to be seen on Thurs when he spent a lot of time tugged in towards the middle leaving the left flank exposed, and thus requiring a disinterested Bale to track back half-heartedly. That resulted in an inefficient defence as well as blunting Bales' attacking runs in the second half.

It's not ideal by any means, but it worked well enough against QPR/Carlisle/United to be a much better option than Naughton.

The good thing about Sunday is its Villa, they are poor at the back - providing we battle well enough to control the game we should get a few goals. Villa are not as organised and as good defensively as the likes of West Brom.

So, as long as we are not completely flat we still should win realistically speaking.

One thing I would say, the crowd could really do with getting behind the team from the off this Sunday instead of waiting for something to happen. A good atmosphere would make all the difference in my mind and see us over the line even if we are a little jaded.
