Just adding salty fuel to the "but they don't deserve to be in first!" fire...

It's also a little bit hilarious that United are actually doing better than they "should" be.

Expected based on what? Chances? Result before the game? Historic results?

These kind of tables and the ones with and without VAR are irrelevant. We're top because we have the most points after 10 games.

Did Rashford really do something so sinful when he celebrated his birthday even after they lost to City? Can he not enjoy himself even after a hard day or when things are shit at work? I’d be pissed at my manager if he spoke about me publicly after I celebrated my birthday even if things are bad at work.

Am I off on this?

This idea that players owe fans some sort of penace after a defeat is something I thought was just tabloid media bollocks. Disappointed to see a manager also buy into it.

Just read on the BBC it was pre-planned and he turned up to training on time on Monday.

F Ten Haag. If he was my manager in a normal workplace I'd be looking to leave and go elsewhere. The party probably helped Rashford escape for a night.

On top of all that, he spoke to the player privately and the player apologised, so there was no need at all to talk about this entirely internal incident in a press conference other than to publicly belittle the player. Ten Hag is a creature.

Surely he can celebrate his birthday but just, in view of the circumstances, do it quietly. ETH is not covering himself in glory once again. If Rashford went over the top with his celebrations ETH should have dealt with it privately in house.

This is the kind of neuroticism from managers that causes festering wounds within squads.

If he'd just said "It's his birthday, it was pre-planned. He's as disappointed as everyone about the result but I'm not going to police his life. He wasn't drunk, and arrived on-time and ready to train on Monday morning." then that goes a long way to keeping the players on side and wanting to bust a gut for him. In fact I can hear that with an Aussie accent already.

100%. I think ETH has misread this so badly it’s almost comical. If anything these things are surely good for team morale at times like this? ETH looks like he’s trying to lose the dressing room!

Should he have locked himself in the bathroom crying? Done a 6 hour Rocky-style workout on the streets of Manchester? It’s another example of footballers being dehumanised and not seen as ordinary (and yes, very rich) people.

Further to this: I know we all get wrapped up in our teams, some to a very great degree (probably an unhealthy degree sometimes), but do we honestly expect players to cancel their birthday party because of a bad performance? What is it with these demands of self-flagellation from players because we go home a bit miffed at the result?

We hope that the players recognise that we pay hard earned money to watch them, but who genuinely believes that gives anyone the right to demand that Marcus Rashford goes straight home after a match and sits in his front room sulking on his birthday because Man Utd got beat?

That's not a healthy way to be about football.

I've read.plenty of examples on fan sites of this though, including from Spurs fans, especially after a derby defeat.

Expected goals etc should only be used as ONE of many tools when evaluating a player/opposition.

For example, if a players expected goals rate is much lower than the goals he has scored, then they may be in a bit of a purple patch so you need to do much more evaluation before signing them.

The problem is people are now using it in isolation and drawing up these stupid tables which take out context and many other important metrics

it's Ten Haag trying to flex what little muscle he has left.

a vain attempt to try to publicly show who's the boss and that he cares more than the players do.

he's hopeless and I'm so happy we didn't go for him.

“Yea look, it was his birthday and a pre planned event. Players are people who are entitled to enjoy their birthdays no matter how bad a day at the office has been. It’s a way of unwinding. We all felt down after the defeat because it’s not the way we wanted the game to pan out. And we all unwind differently. Marcus has been totally professionally throughout the season and I’ve no reason to question is workrate or intentions. I consider the matter closed”

imagine a manager saying that. Ours would never say it because that D word won’t happen.

Remove the manager from the well-oiled machine that was Ajax and results may vary.

Hell, look at how Ajax are doing after their football operation was interrupted by controversy and departures.

No bueno.
