It's only been 6 years since the last bet he is charged with placing. Wonder how the FA found out about this one, or how many other bets he's placed since??

Football really needs to get to grips with its relationship with gambling.

A bit like F1 needed to have a reckoning about tobacco sponsorships a few years ago there needs to be a reckoning here.

They can’t on one hand ban all gambling within the sport, and on the other plaster every hoarding shirt and ad break with gambling ads.

They're taking them off the front of shirts in the PL in I think 2026. But that's just a drop in the ocean of gambling exposure.

This sign is posted in every locker room in the NFL so players and staff see it every day.

It's pretty simple. For the few years you are a professional footballer you cannot under any circumstances bet on football. You can play poker, bet horses, wager on any other sport. But part of the deal you make when that massive check hits your bank account is you can't bet on football.

In fact I think the FA has been pretty lax with some of these punishments.

When I saw this yesterday I immediately looked up who their next home game is against (I couldn’t remember when we’re supposed to go there). Turns out West Ham have the honour of introducing Premier League football to Kenilworth Road - on Friday Night Football. That’s suddenly a very tough looking fixture for West Ham.

(Good)

The comments, likes and retweets of that Depay post are so fucking bleak.
Looking at the response from players on Dele gave me back some genuine hope about footballers as a collective. That lasted about a day. So f'ing disappointed.

Wesley Fofana with a cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery. The third most expensive defender of all time (after Maguire and VVD) with a very injury prone start to his career.

It's very simple, as long as you completely ignore the fact that gambling addiction is an illness just like any other addiction, and choosing to submerge a uniquely susceptible group of people (young men with disposable income and lots of time to kill) in as much lucrative betting advertising as possible is inevitably going to cause problems.

"Whenever more than one player approaches the referee, at least one of those players, and potentially more, will be shown an automatic yellow card. Practically, any player that runs from a distance to approach the match officials will be booked."

I'll belive it when I see it.

The behaviour of managers and their back room staff will come under greater scrutiny, with an automatic yellow card if there is ever more than one coach in the technical area, and harsher penalties for managers that leave their technical area.

Aggression from coaches, towards match officials or opponents, will be routinely met with a red card,
and any club official sent off will no longer be allowed to watch the game from the stands. Instead, they must be out-of-sight of the pitch.

Tets will need a rope & anchor. Plus a gag.

These sanctions have been in the laws for years but have been ignored at the pro level. Confronting an official on the field at HT or FT? Red. Leaving the technical area to dissent? Red. Delaying the restart of play for an opponent? Red.

Like I said I'll belive it when I see it. Will they actually send Arteta off during Arsenal/Newcastle or will it default back to the usual for the big games.

Yep, I would love to see this, but not very confident we will.

What really confuses me, is that PL refs will be aware that the way they behave to players trickles all the way down the pyramid and as such they could really make a difference by just implementing the powers they already have.

A crackdown on dissent needs support from groups like the FA to work. Because otherwise the first big pl match to end 10v9 will have MOTD saying the ref has ruined a big game.

Yup we’ve heard this kind of thing before from the refs. They will still let the likes of Klopp get away with murder. It’ll only be smaller clubs who are punished.
